A case of primary mucinous carcinoma originating in the renal pelvis associated with renal lithiasis is reported. The left kidney removed was mostly occupied by mucinous carcinoma with areas of signet ring cell carcinoma. The epithelium covering the pelvis consisted of a single layer of columnar epithelium with scattered goblet cells and mucous glands. A series of careful examinations of the abdominal viscera failed to disclose any other primary lesion. The patient died with multiple peritoneal tumor disseminations eight months after the operation despite additional chemotherapy.

Adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis is so rare that many reviews of renal tumours fail to include any instance of this lesion. We present a 75-year-old female patient with no previous history of urological disease in whom a renal pelvic tumour was diagnosed. Histological examination after radical nephroureterectomy proved the tumour to be a rare adenocarcinoma. The course of the disease, the possible predisposing factors, the treatment of the tumour and the prognosis are discussed.

This paper presents one case of cholesteatoma of the left renal pelvis of a horseshoe kidney. This is quite an unusual process presenting an uncertain etiology and originated from a escamour metaplasia of the urothelium. Diagnosis can be made by X-rays and unlike leukoplasia it is not considered to be a pre-malignant condition. Probable etiologies, diagnosis and treatment are commented.

We report on a 70-year-old patient diagnosed as having urothelial carcinoma (T1, G1) localized in the anterior aspect of the right renal pelvis. Following preoperative assessment, the patient underwent percutaneous endoscopic resection of the tumor. Eighty-seven patients and 60 normal children were studied to determine the upper limit of the renal pelvic size in children and its relation to disease and age. The renal pelves were all measured by ultrasonography. Further radiologic examinations were performed on the disease group to confirm the final diagnosis. An unusual case of benign fibroepithelial polyp of the renal pelvis in a patient past middle age is presented. Peroperative frozen section microscopy should be done to prevent nephroureterectomy. The therapy was local excision. The postoperative course was uneventful.

From 1970 to 1985 we treated 144 cases of malignant tumors of the kidney. Of these patients only 11 (8 per cent) had squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis compared to transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis in 53 per cent, renal cell carcinoma in 37 per cent and other types in 2 per cent. The intravenous urograms of 80 patients aged 16 to 29 (mean 23) with urinary bilharziasis were reviewed to determine the frequency of striation of the renal pelvis and ureter. Another 345 patients aged 16 to 29 (mean 22) with various abdominal and urological symptoms, had intravenous urography during the same period and were used as a reference group. Striation of the upper urinary tract was demonstrated in 21% of the patients with urinary schistosomiasis but in only 3% of the reference group. Striation constitutes an early radiological change in this disease.
