BACKGROUND: Screening for chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is crucial for the prevention and early detection of gastric cancer. Endoscopy is the main method of CAG diagnosis, with high training requirements and limited accuracy, making it difficult to popularize. The study attempts to improve the positive rate and accuracy of CAG screening through non-invasive testing.
METHODS: A total of 2564 patients who underwent gastroscopy were included in this study. The results of gastroscopic evaluation, histological biopsy results (including H. pylori biopsy), urea breath test (UBT) results, serum pe

BACKGROUND: It has long been recognised that specific patterns of gastritis are linked with different gastroduodenal diseases and that serum pepsinogens vary with the histological state of the gastric mucosa. With the discovery of the role of Helicobacter pylori in chronic gastritis and the availability of noninvasive tests for H. pylori infection, individuals with H. pylori gastritis can now be identified without endoscopic biopsy. However, without a knowledge of the pattern and severity of gastritis it is impossible to predict the likelihood of significant associated gastroduodenal pathology…

Intramucosal peptic activity may participate in the genesis of acute and chronic superficial gastritis. The proteolytic activity of homogenates of gastric mucosa (antrum and body) and duodenum were measured at pH 2.0 (total peptic activity) after exposure to pH 8.0 (pepsinogen) and the activated pepsinogen (pepsin) was calculated in pediatric patients investigated for the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori), 122 antral, 77 stomach body, and 74 duodenal biopsies were examined in 43 H pylori positive patients, 51 controls, and 28 H pylori negative gastritis patients. Activated pepsinogen

OBJECTIVE: To explore the state of the gastric mucosa in individuals with and without peptic ulcer disease from populations with contrasting peptic ulcer risks.
DESIGN: Pepsinogen A, pepsinogen C, gastrin and Helicobacter pylori antibodies are serological markers of gastritis. A decreasing pepsinogen A-C ratio and pepsinogen A level are known to reflect an increasing severity of corpus atrophy, whereas gastrin levels decrease with an increasing severity of antral atrophy when corpus atrophy is present. Helicobacter pylori-positive men, with and without a peptic ulcer history, were the focus o

Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), a precursor of intestinal gastric cancer, is mostly ascertained noninvasively by serum pepsinogens in epidemiologic studies. However, serological definitions vary widely. We aimed to investigate the impact of this variation on estimated prevalence of CAG and its association with its main risk factors, age and Helicobacter pylori infection. Serum pepsinogen I and II and antibodies against H. pylori were measured by ELISA among 9,444 women and men aged 50-74 years in a population-based cohort study in Saarland/Germany. Application of the various definitions resu…

Functional dyspepsia is distinguishable from Helicobacter pylori-associated dyspepsia. However, distinguishing H. pylori-associated dyspepsia from functional dyspepsia before H. pylori eradication is difficult. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to investigate whether serum pepsinogen levels before H. pylori eradication are associated with the amelioration of dyspepsia after successful H. pylori eradication. Additionally, we examined the usefulness of serum pepsinogen levels and other factors in predicting dyspepsia outcomes. H. pylori eradication was effective in 14 patients (Responder

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is an association between otitis media with effusion and laryngopharyngeal reflux in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 31 children with otitis media with effusion. The pepsinogen level in the middle ear fluid of all patients was measured by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Each patient's middle ear fluid was investigated for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) using the Campylobacter-like organism (CLO) test. The middle ear pepsinogen levels were compared with those in the serum. The correlation between pepsinogen levels and H. p

A modification of Berstad's spectrophotometric method was tested and proved capable of detecting pepsin concentrations in mucosal perendoscopic biopsy homogenates. The relationship between this parameter and pepsin in gastric juice and pepsinogen group I in serum and in biopsy homogenates was analyzed. From the biochemical point of view, the assay was found sufficiently accurate. Mucosal pepsinogen group I, but not mucosal pepsin, concentration was found higher in gastric and duodenal ulcer patients than in controls. Patients with corpus-fundic gastric ulcer showed significantly lower mucosal

The paper deals with a description of the biochemical properties of the isoforms of pepsinogen pepsin of gastric mucosa and blood serum in children suffering from duodenal ulcerative disease as well as in atrophic and subtrophic lesions of gastric mucosa. Atrophic gastritis was found to involve an inhibited biosynthesis of the Ist fraction of pepsinogen while ulcerative-erosive lesions of the gastro-duodenal area--an increased level of the 3rd isoform of pepsinogen.

Biomarkers are specific molecular, histological, or physiological characteristics of normal or pathogenic biological processes and are promising in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs). Although some biomarkers have been validated for infection by Ostertagia sp. in cattle raised in temperate regions, there is a lack of information for tropical regions. The aim of this project was to assess potential biomarkers and validate the most promising. In the first study, 36 bovines (Nelore breed) naturally infected by GINs were distributed into two groups: infected (not treated with anthe

Most undesired side effects in therapy with non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID) mainly effect the gastric and duodenal mucosa. The radioimmunological determination of pepsinogen A and C (pepsinogen group I and II) is qualified for inclusion of the functional and morphologic state of the gastroduodenal mucosa. By determination of the pepsinogens group A and C the influence and the gastroduodenal compatibility of the non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug lonazolac Ca (LCa) [Irritren] were examined in a dosage of 600 mg/d during a 2-weeks therapy. 31 patients with various painful rheumatic…

This study was undertaken in healthy volunteers to determine the relation between serum levels of pepsinogen A, pepsinogen C, pepsinogen A:C ratio, and gastrin on the one hand and histology of the gastric mucosa on the other. The grade of gastritis was scored separately for antral and fundic mucosa by three different classifications: Whitehead, activity, and the Sydney score. Among 48 healthy volunteers studied, 17 were found to have gastritis according to the criteria of Whitehead. Fourteen of these 17 subjects with gastritis had H. pylori in gastric biopsies. In all 48 subjects serum pepsino

The aim of this experience has been to evaluate the chief cell mass and serum pepsinogen I in gastric ulcer patients. Comparisons were also made with parietal cell mass and acid secretion. Chief cell mass and serum pepsinogen I are not only influenced by the localization of ulcer but, also, by the histological condition of fundic mucosa. In fact, the behaviour of serum pepsinogen I and chief cell mass in type I gastric ulcer is the same observed in case of fundic chronic gastritis without gastric ulcer. In case of gastric ulcer type I with superficial fundic gastritis it emerges normozymogenis

INTRODUCTION: Noninvasive assessment of corpus atrophic gastritis (CAG), a condition at increased risk of gastric cancer, is based on the measurement of pepsinogens, gastrin, and Helicobacter pylori antibodies. Parietal cell autoantibodies (PCAs) against the gastric proton pump (ATP4) are potential serological biomarkers of CAG. The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of PCA and pepsinogen I tests in patients with clinical suspicion of CAG with the histopathological evaluation of gastric biopsies as reference standard.
METHODS: A prospective case-finding study was …

To verify the hypothesis that chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a precancerous lesion for gastric cancer, we investigated the correlation between the prevalence rates for CAG determined by levels of serum pepsinogens (I and II) of randomly selected, healthy, blood donors and the mortality rates for gastric cancer among four prefectures (Akita, Iwate, Miyagi, and Okinawa) in Japan. The prevalence rates for CAG according to a criterion that the level of pepsinogen I is below 70 ng/ml and the pepsinogen I to pepsinogen II ratio is below 3.0, were the highest in Akita for both sexes (38.8 percen…
