[Perception of mistreatment during medical residency training].

Because previous investigations show that mistreatment during residency is frequent we undertook this research to assess the prevalence of psychological abuse, physical violence and sexual harassment in residency training programs and the professional status of perpetrators. Through a literature review and a previous qualitative study we developed a self-administered questionnaire. Thirteen events that could be experienced by residents and ten possible perpetrators were described in the questionnaire. Residents were asked to record whether they had experienced these events, at least once, and

Body fat perception in eating-disordered men.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the relative roles of body fat ideals and body fat perception in men with eating disorders. METHOD: We compared 27 men meeting criteria for a current eating disorder (17 with anorexia nervosa and 10 with bulimia nervosa), 21 male mountain climbers, and 21 control men, using a computerized test of body image, the "somatomorphic matrix." RESULTS: When asked to choose the body that they "ideally would like to have," men with eating disorders selected an image with body fat closely comparable to that chosen by the control men. On perceived body fat, however, the gr…

Allophonic mode of speech perception in dyslexia.

Perceptual discrimination between speech sounds belonging to different phoneme categories is better than that between sounds falling within the same category. This property, known as "categorical perception," is weaker in children affected by dyslexia. Categorical perception develops from the predispositions of newborns for discriminating all potential phoneme categories in the world's languages. Predispositions that are not relevant for phoneme perception in the ambient language are usually deactivated during early childhood. However, the current study shows that dyslexic children maintain a …

Elevated bilirubin and visual perception in pilots.

BACKGROUND: A fatal aircraft accident of a Bo-105 helicopter on May 20, 1996 led to the suspicion that the pilot's raised serum bilirubin level could have contributed to the accident. It was suspected that an increase of bilirubin beyond 20.52 micromol x L(-1) could disturb visual perception. METHODS: In 1998 and 1999, 101 pilots with functional hyperbilirubinemia, diagnosed as Gilbert's syndrome, were subjected to perceptual-psychological testing (signal detection test) during their periodic medical examinations at the German Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine. The results of the psych…

Motion perception in glaucoma patients: a review.

Most of the histopathological and psychophysical studies in glaucoma reveal a preferential damage to the magnocellular (M) pathway although … t the early stages of glaucoma. In this context, several authors have addressed the issue of motion perception under the hypothesis of a predominant damage of the M pathway in glaucoma, and that motion perception is mediated mainly by M pathway. The results of these studies depict a large variation in the percentage of patients showing anomalous motion perce …

Distortion of olfactory perception: diagnosis and treatment.

Clinically, olfaction can fail in any of three ways: (i) decreased sensitivity (hyposmia, anosmia) and two types of distortion (dysosmia); (ii) distorted quality of an odorant stimulation (troposmia); (iii) perceived odor when no odorant is present (phantosmia, hallucination). The distortions are usually much more upsetting to a person's quality of life than a simple loss. An ipsilatersal loss of olfactory sensitivity is often identified in the nostril with any type of olfactory distortion. The pathophysiology of a stimulated distortion (troposmia) is likely a decreased number of functioning o

BACKGROUND: In elderly asthmatics, underdiagnosis is one of the important features. The main reason for underdiagnosis is thought to be a lo … ethacholine induced airway narrowing, lung auscultation and questionnaire survey about presence and perception of wheezing were conducted in 194 asthmatics. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty-nine patients (87%) developed wheezing during the methacholine induced airway obstruction. Duodenal fat intensifies the perception of heartburn.

BACKGROUND: Patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) frequently report that meals high in fat worsen heartburn. Nevertheless, studies to determine whether high fat meals promote gastro-oesophageal reflux have produced conflicting and equivocal conclusions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: To determine, alternatively, whether fat in the small intestinal lumen intensifies the perception of heartburn, we studied 11 patients with typical heartburn from GORD. After being placed on omeprazole to suppress endogenous acid, these fasting subjects underwent oesophageal perfusions with graded doses o…

Safety of combination vaccines: perception versus reality.

BACKGROUND: Combination vaccines contain multiple antigens to protect against several diseases simultaneously and have simplified the delivery of childhood immunizations. Children are healthier today because of the use of combination vaccines, and the United States is benefiting from record low numbers of vaccine-preventable diseases. Despite obvious benefits, concerns and misconceptions exist regarding the safety and efficacy of combination vaccines. METHODS: A review of the pediatric literature to dispel the common misperceptions and potential barriers to combining vaccines. RESULTS: Assur…

Heartbeat perception in panic disorder: a reanalysis.

This article describes a reanalysis of seven studies on heart beat perception (HBP) in panic disorder. The pooled sample had 709 participants from eight diagnostic categories. Accurate HBP was uncommon, but more prevalent among panic disorder patients than among healthy controls, depressed patients, patients with palpitations and individuals with infrequent panic attacks. No differences were found between panic disorder patients and patients with other anxiety disorders. Accurate perceivers had higher anxiety sensitivity scores than inaccurate perceivers. The data remain inconclusive as to whe…

Oral contraceptive health benefits: perception versus reality.

Many women remain unaware of classic oral contraceptive (OC) noncontraceptive health benefits even as new health advantages emerge from experience and research. An extensive body of evidence has established that OC protect women against dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia, menstrual cycle irregularities, iron deficiency anemia, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts, benign breast disease, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer. In addition, the FDA has stated for the first time that an OC-triphasic norgestimate/35 micrograms ethinyl estradiol--is an effective treatment for mod

Police perception of intoxication among injured pedestrians.

To assess police officers' accuracy in perceiving alcohol or drug intoxication of injured pedestrians, blood test results from pedestrians struck by vehicles and admitted to a Level I trauma center for a 3-year period were linked to police reports of the crashes. Police officers were 64.5% sensitive and 99.3% specific in identifying alcohol use in injured pedestrians when blood tests were positive for alcohol, and 2.2% sensitive and 100% specific in identifying other drug use when blood tests were positive for drugs other than alcohol. Those with higher blood ethanol levels were more often cor

Perception and response in plant disease resistance.

Plants express sophisticated mechanisms for recognizing pathogens. The functionally defined repertoire of non-self perception is large; the number and nature of subsequent molecular events required for resistance is unknown. Recent cloning of disease resistance genes, and genetic identification of loci required for their function, allows dissection of the structure, evolution, and deployment within populations of pathogen-perception mechanisms. Roles for reactive oxygen species and programmed cell death in resistance have also been suggested recently. New results document a role for salicylic …

Determinants of the perception of sagittal motion.

This study examines the change in the perceived distance of an object in three-dimensional space when the object and/or the observer's head … he perceived motion of the object in the two situations was used to measure the compensation in the perception of the motion of the object as a result of the head motion. Compensation was often clearly incomplete, and errors were often made in the perception of the motion of the stimulus object. A theory is proposed, which identifies the relation between the …

The perception of emotion by schizophrenic patients.

Studies which have examined the perception of emotion by schizophrenic patients have produced conflicting results, an outcome which may, in part, be due to difficulties in presenting a realistic portrayal of emotion. This study exposed 32 schizophrenic patients in remission and ten controls to five videotaped scenes of emotional situations played by actors. The schizophrenic patients were divided into three groups, namely those living with high-EE relatives, those living with low-EE relatives and those living alone, in order to test the hypothesis that patients in a high-EE environment are les…

The production and perception of syllable structure.

Much research on speech over the years has focused on uncovering examples of the nonlinear relationship between acoustics and perception (e.g., so-called "categorical perception") and between articulation and acoustics [as described by Stevens's (1972) quantal theory]. In the present experiment we demonstrate that naturally occurring linear changes in articulation may also be perceived discontinuously. Specifically, linear changes in relative phase of glottal and oral movements are perceived as categorical changes in the location of syllable juncture. Thus, phase transitions observed during sp…

Vocal quality factors: analysis, synthesis, and perception.

The purpose of this study was to examine several factors of vocal quality that might be affected by changes in vocal fold vibratory patterns. Four voice types were examined: modal, vocal fry, falsetto, and breathy. Three categories of analysis techniques were developed to extract source-related features from speech and electroglottographic (EGG) signals. Four factors were found to be important for characterizing the glottal excitations for the four voice types: the glottal pulse width, the glottal pulse skewness, the abruptness of glottal closure, and the turbulent noise component. The signifi
