Revisiting differences in individuals with bulimia nervosa with and without a history of anorexia nervosa: Eating pathology, personality, and maltreatment.

OBJECTIVE: Early research in subtyping bulimia nervosa (BN) by history of anorexia nervosa (AN) generally found more similarities than differences, but recent research and limitations of the early work suggest the need to revisit this approach. We examine differences between women with BN with and without a history of AN regarding eating pathology, personality, and childhood maltreatment. METHOD: Participants were women (aged 18-55) recruited from the community and eating disorder clinics who met DSM-IV criteria for BN; 37 had a history of AN and 101 did not. Participants completed questionna

Disorders of eating behavior: correlation between hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid function and psychopathological aspects.

Altered pituitary-thyroid (PT) function (TSH, FT4, FT3 plasma levels) was correlated with symptoms of Eating Disorders (ED) in 137 patients (65 ANR, 12 ANP, 19 ANBP, 26 BN, 8 EDNOS-AN, 7 EDNOS-BN) and 30 controls. PT hormone concentrations were assessed by immunofluorimetry and psychopathology by EDI-2 and HSCL-90. Values of TSH were decreased in ANP, BN, EDNOS-AN, of T4 in ANR, ANP, AN-BP, of T3 in ANR, ANP, ANBP, BN, EDNOS-AN, EDNOS-BN. TSH values correlated negatively with ineffectiveness in BN and EDNOS-AN, and with depression in EDNOS-AN. FT4 values correlated positively with perfectionis

An exploration of exaggerated fears of identity theft in hoarding disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with hoarding symptoms often report laborious routines of reviewing and destroying paperwork prior to discarding, citing fears of identity theft if personal information is discarded. While fears of identity theft seem likely to be elevated in hoarding disorder, it is unclear if these fears are elevated beyond what is normative for older adults, and whether such fears may be related to third factors. METHOD: In the current study we sought to explore whether fears of identity theft were higher among 103 individuals high in hoarding symptoms as compared with 59 non-hoar

Variables associated with disturbed eating habits and overvalued ideas about the personal implications of body shape and weight in a female adolescent population.

OBJECTIVES: Few studies exist that examine risk factors for the overvalued ideas about the personal implications of body shape and weight that are viewed as the central cognitive substrate of eating disorders. METHOD: In a female adolescent population (mean age = 14 years, SD = 0.7), we examine variables previously identified in the literature as risk factors for eating disorders, namely, self-esteem, comments from others about eating/weight/shape, perfectionism, childhood and parental weight/shape, and parental conflict. RESULTS: These variables were all correlated significantly with curren

Psychological Functioning of Women Diagnosed with Lichen Planus and Other Diseases of the Oral Cavity-Explorative Study.

The role of psychosocial factors in the development of changes in lichen planus and other diseases of the oral cavity has been implicated, but is still understudied. Therefore, the aim of our study was to describe the specific profile of psychological functioning of patients with these diseases, including the role of temperamental traits, action-oriented personality components, and self-esteem. In total, 94 adult women participated in the study: (1) with lichen planus (LP; n = 46; Mage = 54.80, SD = 12.53), (2) with other oral conditions (n = 25; Mage = 34.76, SD = 16.03), (3) without chronic

Cognitive Beliefs Across the Symptom Dimensions of Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Type of Symptom Matters.

The cognitive model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) posits that dysfunctional cognitive beliefs are crucial to the onset and maintenance of OCD; however, the relationship between these cognitive beliefs and the heterogeneity of OCD symptoms in children and adolescents remains unknown. We examined how the major belief domains of the cognitive model (inflated responsibility/threat estimation, perfectionism/intolerance of uncertainty, importance/control of thoughts) and dysfunctional metacognitions were related to OCD symptoms across the following dimensions: doubting/checking, obsessing,

An investigation of indirect effects of personality features on anorexia nervosa severity through interoceptive dysfunction in individuals with lifetime anorexia nervosa diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined a hypothesized pathway by which interoceptive dysfunction accounted for associations between personality features (harm avoidance, self-directedness, and perfectionism) and anorexia nervosa (AN) severity (indicated by drive for thinness, eating disorder-related preoccupations and rituals, and body mass index). METHOD: The study sample (n = 270, mean age = 28.47, 95.2% female, 98% White/Caucasian) consisted of probands and biological relatives who met DSM-IV criteria for lifetime diagnoses of AN (omitting criterion D, amenorrhea) drawn from the Price Foundation A

Examining the dynamic relationships between exposure tasks and cognitive restructuring in CBT for SAD: Outcomes and moderating influences.

Meta-analyses indicate that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) leads to substantial symptom alleviation. Although there is an emphasis on engaging in exposure and cognitive restructuring during treatment, the longitudinal relationship between skill use and symptom alleviation is not well understood. Furthermore, treatment response may be attenuated by pre-existing patient vulnerabilities. This study examined the longitudinal association of skill use (i.e. exposure (EX), thought record use (TR)), symptom reduction and the potential moderating influence of perfe

Intolerance of uncertainty mediates the relation between generalized anxiety disorder symptoms and anger.

Previous research has shown that individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) report elevated anger compared with nonanxious individuals; however, the pathways linking GAD and anger are currently unknown. We hypothesized that negative beliefs about uncertainty, negative beliefs about worry and perfectionism dimensions mediate the relationship between GAD symptoms and anger variables. We employed multiple mediation with bootstrapping on cross-sectional data from a student sample (N = 233) to test four models assessing potential mediators of the association of GAD symptoms to inward anger

Pain catastrophizing and lower physical fitness in a sample of computer screen workers with early non-specific upper limb disorders: a case-control study.

In computer workers psychological factors and physical fitness may play an important role in the onset and course of non-specific work-related upper limb disorders (WRULD) beyond socio-demographic factors. Based on our experiences in daily practice we assumed that pain catastrophizing and other psychological variables such as perfectionism, anxiety state and trait, and low physical fitness, are possibly associated with the occurrence of WRULD. We aim to study the association between pain catastrophizing, perfectionism, anxiety (state and trait), physical fitness, sex and level of education and

Mental health in nursing: A student's perspective.

A stigma around mental health issues within healthcare and nursing itself has created a culture of perfectionism in the workplace, and nurses struggle to live up to the expectations while pushing aside their feelings, thoughts, and needs. Inspired by one author's personal experiences, this article explores mental health issues many nurses confront today.

Malaise with praise: A narrative review of 10 years of research on the concept of Fear of Positive Evaluation in social anxiety.

Social anxiety is characterized by a fear of being negatively evaluated by others (i.e., Fear of Negative Evaluation [FNE]). In 2008, Weeks, Heimberg, and Rodebaugh proposed Fear of Positive Evaluation (FPE) as a second cognitive component in social anxiety. The article presents an overview of FPE, its psycho-evolutionary theoretical foundation and assessment by the Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale as well as relevant psychometric research on demographic characteristics. The relationship of FPE with a wide range of established dimensions from clinical, personality, and social psychology (i.e.

Comparisons between atypical anorexia nervosa and anorexia nervosa: Psychological and comorbidity patterns.

OBJECTIVE: Literature comparing "atypical" anorexia nervosa (atypical AN) and anorexia nervosa (AN) suggests these diagnoses share significant similarities in eating disorder (ED) pathology and psychiatric comorbidities. This study evaluated potential differences in ED pathology, psychiatric comorbidity, associated mechanisms (i.e., ED fears and perfectionism), and demographic factors (i.e., ethnicity and age) between individuals with atypical AN and AN. METHOD: Data from seven protocols were combined for a total 464 individuals diagnosed with atypical AN (n = 215) or AN (n = 249). Between-gr

Influencing factors of employment decisions among physical education majors: The mediating role of psychological resilience and the moderating role of gender.

BACKGROUND: Physical education majors often encounter distinct challenges in making employment-related decisions, yet limited empirical research has explored the psychological factors influencing these decisions. METHODS: A total of 908 physical education majors from universities across China were surveyed using a random sampling method. Standardized and validated instruments were employed to measure active coping strategies, peer support, maladaptive perfectionism, psychological resilience, and employment decisions. A moderated mediation model was constructed and tested using partial least s

Correlates of depression in individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder.

The existing literature examining the correlates of depression in individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by inconsistent results. The aim of the current study was to replicate and extend the literature by exploring whether various clinical and demographic factors are related to the occurrence of depression in a large sample (N = 243) of individuals with OCD (M age = 33.00; SD = 12.47; 74% female). Individuals with OCD who had elevated comorbid depressive symptoms [Patient Health Questionnaire-9 item (PHQ-9) ≥10] scored significantly higher on all OCD symptom subt

Relationship of sexual abuse to motivation for strenuous exercise.

AIM: Sources of motivation for intense physical exercise are poorly understood. Based on views that link such behaviour to preexisting psychopathology, we tested the hypotheses that history of childhood sexual abuse would be greater in intense exercisers than in non-exercisers, and that effects of abuse on self-esteem, perfectionism and body dissatisfaction would help to explain any link between abuse and exercise. METHODS: Consecutive attenders at two types of exercise were recruited: weight training and running. Sedentary attenders at a further education college provided a third, comparison

Do risk factors differentiate DSM-5 and drive for thinness severity groups for anorexia nervosa?

BACKGROUND: The current study examined whether risk factors for anorexia nervosa (AN) were related to different levels of severity based on (a) the DSM-5/body mass index (BMI) and (b) drive for thinness (DT) severity ratings. METHODS: The sample comprised 153 pairs of individuals with a lifetime diagnosis AN per DSM-IV criteria and their non-ED sisters (N = 306, mean age = 26.53; mean current BMI = 20.42 kg/m2). The Oxford risk factor interview was used to establish AN-related risk factors. Individuals were categorised into the DSM-5 severity groups based on their lowest BMI, while the DT sub
