Perinatal asphyxia associated with early neonatal mortality: populational study of avoidable deaths.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the epidemiological profile of avoidable early neonatal deaths associated with perinatal asphyxia according to region of death in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: Population-based cohort study including 2,873 avoidable deaths up to six days of life associated with perinatal asphyxia from January 2001 to December 2003. Perinatal asphyxia was considered if intrauterine hypoxia, birth asphyxia, or meconium aspiration syndrome were written in any line of the original Death Certificate. Epidemiological data were also extracted from the Birth Certificate. RESULTS: Dur

Perinatal mortality during fifteen-year period in Tuzla Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

THE AIM: To determine the incidence of perinatal mortality, as well as the frequency of premature deliveries. METHODS: We analyzed the data of birth protocol at the Clinics for Gynecology and Obstetrition at the University Clinical Centre in Tuzla in period 1992-2006. RESULTS: Perinatal mortality gradually declines in the period of 1992-2000. The decline owns mostly to early neonatal mortality more than to fetal which also shows the trend of decrease. During the first analyzed years (1992 and 1993) the incidence of premature deliveries was below 10% but that number increased during 1994 and …

Maternal nutritional status & practices & perinatal, neonatal mortality in rural Andhra Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Despite a vast network of primary health centres and sub-centres, health care outreach in rural parts of India is poor. The Dangoria Charitable Trust (DCT), Hyderabad, has developed a model of health care outreach through trained Village Health and Nutrition Entrepreneur and Mobilisers (HNEMs) in five villages of Medak district in Andhra Pradesh, not serviced by the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) of the Government of India. Impact of such a link worker on perinatal/ neonatal mortality has been positive. The present study attempts to examine the association o

Perinatal periods of risk analysis of infant mortality in Jackson County, Missouri.

The perinatal periods of risk (PPOR) methodology provides an easy-to-use analytical approach to infant mortality that helps focus community initiatives for improving maternal and infant health. Because few analyses have been published, many public health practitioners may be unfamiliar with PPOR. This article demonstrates the application of PPOR analysis using infant mortality in Jackson County, Missouri. While the PPOR consists of two phases, this analysis was restricted to the initial phase of the overall process. The second phase builds on the initial findings and prioritizes the contributi

Two cases of postmaturity-related perinatal mortality in non-local expectant mothers.

We present two cases of postmaturity-related perinatal mortality with delivery at 42 weeks 6 days' and 44 weeks' gestation, respectively. No cause beyond postmaturity was found. Neither induction of labour nor foetal monitoring had been performed despite these gestations going post 41 weeks because of a current 'social obstetrics' phenomenon--non-local expectant mothers coming to Hong Kong from mainland China for delivery.

Two year audit of perinatal mortality at Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal mortality rate is a sensitive indicator of quality of care provided to women in pregnancy, at and after child birth and to the newborns in the first week of life. Regular perinatal audit would help in identifying all the factors that play a role in causing perinatal deaths and thus help in appropriate interventions to reduce avoidable perinatal deaths. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study was carried out to determine perinatal mortality rate (PMR) and the factors responsible for perinatal deaths at KMCTH in the two year period from November 2003 to October 2005 (Kartik 2060…

Histologic, infectious, and molecular correlates of idiopathic spontaneous abortion and perinatal mortality.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the placental and neonatal tissues in fatal cases for a wide variety of infectious agents and cytokine expression. Placentas and corresponding neonatal tissues in 21 consecutive cases of idiopathic spontaneous abortion or perinatal death, before or within 2 days of birth, were tested for an infectious agent. The controls included 10 consecutive cases of fetal and placental tissues from therapeutic abortions, 5 placentas from unremarkable childbirths, and 11 placentas from cases of spontaneous abortion or perinatal death of known cause (ruptured uterus,

[Cesarean section and perinatal mortality 1993-1996 in a regional perinatology center].

During the period between 1993-96 the authors made at the Second Gynaecological and Obstetric Clinic 1099 caesarean sections. The investigated group was subjected to frequency analysis. The relationship with perinatal mortality and early neonatal mortality was assessed. In a group of 287 caesarean sections in 1996 the authors analyzed indication spectra and maternal morbidity. The results were compared with data in the literature. From the assembled data ensues that although the rate of caesarean sections practically does not change, perinatal mortality decreased significantly. This positive r…

Perinatal and infant mortality: trends and risk factors in Norway 1967-90.

Neither the infant nor the under 24 hours mortality rates in Norway improved in the 1980s. The late neonatal mortality rate did not improve significantly in either the 1980s or the 1970s. The postneonatal mortality rate rose steadily throughout the last 15 years. The major mortality declines for all age groups took place in the 1970s. In the 1980s, only the 1-7-day mortality improved significantly. As a result, Norway fell behind in the international ranking of perinatal and infant mortality. Disparities among the perinatal mortality rates of Norwegian counties diminished throughout the 1970s.…

Perinatal mortality in high risk pregnancy: a prospective study of preventable factors.

The present study was undertaken to identify the preventable factors operative in high fetal and neonatal losses. Over a period of one year, of total of 1,600 consecutive deliveries, 1,107 were considered to be at-risk: there were 33 fetal and 31 early neonatal deaths with an overall perinatal mortality rate of 40/1,000 births. Perinatal mortality was higher in mothers who had received inadequate antenatal care and/or with bad obstetric history. Major maternal and obstetric factors associated with a high PMR were: advancing maternal age and parity, antepartum hemorrhage, diabetes, anemia, inst…

Increased perinatal mortality among children of mothers exposed to measles during pregnancy.

A survey done after a severe epidemic of measles in an urban area of Guinea-Bissau has shown that children born to women exposed to measles during pregnancy had a perinatal mortality rate of 15%, compared with only 4% for other children in the community (OR = 4.2; 95% CI 2.1-8.5). None of the women had clinical evidence of measles. Adjusting for background variables, logistic regression analysis showed no tendency towards reduced risk of perinatal mortality among children of women exposed during pregnancy relative to controls. Both stillbirth and early neonatal mortality rates were increased. …

Perinatal mortality in southern Brazil: a population-based study of 7392 births.

Perinatal, fetal and early neonatal mortality rates were determined in a population of 7392 babies born in hospitals in Pelotas (total population, 260 000) during 1982. These babies represented over 99% of all births in the city in that year. The perinatal mortality rate for singletons was 31.9 per 1000 total births, the fetal mortality rate being 16.2 and the early neonatal mortality rate 15.9 per 1000 total births. The most important variable influencing perinatal mortality was birth weight; low-birth-weight babies were 17 times more likely to die in the perinatal period than those weighing 2…

Prematurity and perinatal mortality in pregnancies complicated by maternal Chlamydia trachomatis infections.

In a prospective study of morbidity associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infections during pregnancy, we isolated C trachomatis from the endocervix of 18 (6.7%) of 268 women examined before 19 weeks' gestation. Infected women were significantly younger than noninfected women, and significantly more often unmarried, supported by public assistance, and pregnant for the first time. Among women followed up from 19 weeks' gestation until delivery, the mean duration of gestation was significantly shorter for those with antepartum chlamydial infection. Stillbirth or neonatal death occurred in six (3
