Hyperthyroid periodic paralysis (HPP) is a rare life threatening complication of hyperthyroidism commonly occurring in young Asian males but sporadically found in other races. It is characterised by hypokalemia and acute onset paraparesis with prevalence of one in one hundred thousand (1 in 100000). The symptoms resolve promptly with potassium supplementation. Nonselective beta blockers like propranol can also be used to ameliorate and prevent subsequent paralytic attack. We report a case of 22 year old male presenting with hyperthyroid periodic paralysis (HPP) having very low serum potassium

Aim of the study is to report the experience in the last three years about endourological treatment of newborns affected by genito- and urinary malformation, implying critical urinary tract dilatation and bladder mass requiring a neonatal operative management. Seven - four males and three female - patients were treated cystoscopically during the neonatal period. Three newborns with a posterior urethral valves (PUV), underwent a successful ablation of PUV. In a male with infected persistent large mullerian duct and subsequent acute urinary retention, a cystoscopically-assisted catheterization w

There has been a growing interest among neonatologists and paediatricians regarding identification and evaluation of hypertension in the neonatal period. Despite the emergent normative data on blood pressure values in term and preterm neonates over the last two decades, there is still controversy regarding correct definition and classification of hypertension. This article will discuss the current definitions, available normative data and etiology of neonatal hypertension. There is paucity of records in terms of efficacy of antihypertensive drugs in this specific population and management is u

Dermatomyositis is rare during the reproductive period, but when it does occur, most cases have been reported from the viewpoint of the obstetric management of high-risk pregnancy. In return, there is little information concerning the contribution of pregnancy to the development and course of dermatomyositis. We describe a patient with dermatomyositis that presented after the delivery of a healthy infant. This case, with support from a literature review, suggests that pregnancy could be a trigger or contributor for the development of dermatomyositis.

AIM: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) presenting primarily in the postpartum period has rarely been reported.
METHODS: The medical data of 58 female patients diagnosed with AIH was assessed.
RESULTS: In the study population, three (5.1%) patients were diagnosed postpartum. Based on clinical, laboratory and liver biopsy findings, two of these patients were considered to have subclinical AIH and were diagnosed by disease flare after delivery. The remaining patient was considered as new onset of AIH in the postpartum period.
CONCLUSIONS: AIH can present in the postpartum and should be actively consi

As a consequence of ischemia-reperfusion injury of whole organ transplants and hypoxia-anoxia of cell transplants, transplantation unavoidably triggers adverse, cytodestructive inflammation within the allograft. Interventions that dampen adverse inflammation may limit the extent and duration of this injury, and preserve tissue function. Moreover, these interventions should create a milieu that guides many donor-activated T cells into a tissue-protective phenotype, thus promoting graft acceptance or even tolerance. Hence, it is useful, maybe crucial, to identify the measures that minimize delet

OBJECTIVES: The pathogenesis of widespread pain and increased tenderness in Fibromyalgia (FM) are still unknown. Recently, the role of central nervous system hyperexcitability is emphasized in pathogenesis of FM. The central sensitization was demonstrated with decrease in nociceptive flexion reflex (NFR) threshold in patients with FM. The NFR and cutaneous silent period (CuSP) are excitatory and inhibitory parts of the same spinal protective reflex, respectively. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in CuSP in FM.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with FM and 18 healthy

This paper presents the online estimation of temporal frequency to simultaneously detect and identify the quasiperiodic motion of an object. … detect ("when") the frequency. In color video, we demonstrate the filter to detect and identify the periodicity of natural motion. The velocity of moving gratings is determined in a real world example. We consider periodic and quasiperiodic motion of both stationary and nonstationary objects.

The recent increase in the number of cases of syphilis in the UK, including among women of reproductive age, has stimulated the need for a review of practices concerning assessment and management of syphilis in pregnancy and the neonatal period. This paper summarizes available evidence from published guidelines, primary and secondary research. Optimal management of syphilis in pregnancy and the neonatal period relies on the early diagnosis and staging of maternal disease, prompt treatment to prevent congenital syphilis, and timely assessment of newborns.

Thyrotoxic, hypokalaemic periodic paralysis is an uncommon, potentially life-threatening endocrine emergency. Because of the acute onset of neurological symptoms patients often initially present to hospital ED. To reduce patient morbidity and costs of unnecessary investigations, early recognition and appropriate treatment is required. The case of a young man of Singaporean origin is presented to highlight current treatment, management and pathophysiology of this condition.

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a fairly common manifestation of hyperthyroidism in Asian populations, with an incidence of about 1.9% in thyrotoxic patients, but it is rarely diagnosed among Caucasians and blacks in the Western world. The diagnosis often can be made on the basis of the clinical manifestations alone. Sometimes, periodic paralysis precedes hyperthyroidism or occurs in silent hyperthyroidism. As a result, physicians may easily overlook it even when life-threatening hypokalemia is present. The pathophysiology of this disorder is still not well understood. Correction of the
