Fixed Prosthetic Restorations and Periodontal Health: From Fabrication to Supracrestal Tissue Attachment Preservation and Clinical Outcomes.

Background and Objectives: Periodontal health represents a condition characterized by homeostasis between the teeth and the surrounding supporting tissues and implies the absence of inflammation, confirmed by the lack of bleeding, epithelial attachment loss, mobility, or periodontal pocket formation. Fixed prosthetic restorations may compromise periodontal health already during the fabrication phase, given that decisions made during their planning and placement affect long-term clinical outcomes. The aim of this manuscript was to provide insight into the interaction between periodontal tissues

[Orthodontic treatment and periodontal soft tissue augmentation].

During the orthodontic treatment, if the root moves lingually, the risk of buccal gingival recession is low. On the contrary, if the root moves buccally, the thin buccal bone probably leads to the buccal gingival recession. In patient without gingival recession, bony dehiscence and fenestration make the situation complicated. Both of the directions show high risk of gingival recession. The present article, from the point of view of periodontal soft tissue, introduces the periodontal soft tissue augmentation technique related to orthodontic treatment and the timing of the surgery.

Periodontal disease immunology: 'double indemnity' in protecting the host.

During the last two to three decades our understanding of the immunobiology of periodontal disease has increased exponentially, both with respect to the microbial agents triggering the disease process and the molecular mechanisms of the host engagement maintaining homeostasis or leading to collateral tissue damage. These foundational scientific findings have laid the groundwork for translating cell phenotype, receptor engagement, intracellular signaling pathways and effector functions into a 'picture' of the periodontium as the host responds to the 'danger signals' of the microbial ecology to

Impact of obesity and aging on crestal alveolar bone height in mice.

Obesity and aging are associated with periodontitis, which represents a chronic inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting tissues, i.e. the periodontium. However, if both risk factors also have a negative impact on crestal alveolar bone in a clinically healthy periodontium, has yet to be elucidated and was analyzed in this in-vivo study. Eight C57BL/6 mice were fed a normal diet during the entire study. Half of these mice were sacrificed at week 19 (group 1: younger lean mice), whereas the other half of the animals were sacrificed at week 25 (group 2: older lean mice). In addition, four mic

[Risk assessment for preterm delivery in pregnant women with active periodontitis].

INTRODUCTION: Premature labor has been regarded as a highly problematic clinical event not only due to its relation with perinatal mortality but also in the light of the remote results of the prematurity. Therefore many ongoing studies concentrate on evaluation of potentially avoidable risk factors of premature labor. Relatively few studies have suggested chronic periodontitis as such a determinant. OBJECTIVES: Prospective evaluation of periodontium changes in the course of otherwise normal pregnancy. Assessment of potential influence of periodontium pathology, and its severity, on the obstet

Retrograde nerve growth factor signaling modulates tooth mechanical hyperalgesia induced by orthodontic tooth movement via acid-sensing ion channel 3.

Orthodontic tooth movement elicits alveolar bone remodeling and orofacial pain that is manifested by tooth mechanical hyperalgesia. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is upregulated in periodontium and may modulate tooth mechanical hyperalgesia. The objectives were to examine the role of NGF in tooth mechanical hyperalgesia and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Tooth mechanical hyperalgesia was induced by ligating closed coil springs between incisors and molars in Sprague-Dawley rats. Retrograde labeling was performed by periodontal administration of fluor-conjugated NGF and the detection of fluo

Acemannan sponges stimulate alveolar bone, cementum and periodontal ligament regeneration in a canine class II furcation defect model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Periodontal disease is a common infectious disease, found worldwide, causing the destruction of the periodontium. The periodontium is a complex structure composed of both soft and hard tissues, thus an agent applied to regenerate the periodontium must be able to stimulate periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone regeneration. Recent studies demonstrated that acemannan, a polysaccharide extracted from Aloe vera gel, stimulated both soft and hard tissue healing. This study investigated effect of acemannan as a bioactive molecule and scaffold for periodontal tiss

How Does Epstein-Barr Virus Contribute to Chronic Periodontitis?

Chronic periodontitis is spreading worldwide and mutually interacts with systemic diseases like diabetes mellitus. Although periodontopathic bacteria are inevitable pathogens in their onset and progression, many cases are not ascribable to the virulence of these bacteria because the effect of plaque control is limited. In contrast, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in the periodontium has been correlated with chronic periodontitis and has recently been considered as a promising pathogenic candidate for this disease. However, several important questions have yet to be addressed. For instance, although E

Role of integrins in wound repair and its periodontal implications.

Wound healing in human periodontium is a complex process which involves both cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Integrins play a major role in regulation of these cell-cell, cell-matrix interaction. Wound healing involves two major events i.e. re-epithelialization and connective tissue repair. In this concise review, we will discuss the role of integrins in these major events as well as their impIications in periodontal wound repair. Integrins are differentially expressed in both of these major events. In re-epithelialization, keratinocytes express novel integrins receptors αvβ1, α5β1and

Tritiated thymidine autoradiographic study on the influence of sensory and sympathetic innervation on periodontal wound healing in the rat.

Understanding of wound healing mechanisms is important in designing preventive and therapeutic approaches to inflammatory periodontal diseases, which are a major cause of dental morbidity. In this study, cell proliferation was assessed after an experimental gingival wound; this was preceded by either resection of 3 mm of the inferior alveolar nerve, total extirpation of the superior cervical ganglion, trauma to those structures or sham operations. At different times, animals were pulsed with 0.5 microCi/g body weight of tritiated thymidine; histological sections were processed for quantitative

Covid-19 and SARS-CoV-2 infection in periodontology: A narrative review.

The present review examined the available evidence on possible involvement of gingival tissues in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Gingival tissue possess SARS-CoV-2 entry and transmission factors, among them ACE2 (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) and TMPRSS2 (transmembrane protease serine 2), which are the principal mediators of the virus cell invasion. Clinical observations reveal SARS-CoV-2 RNA in periodontal tissues and crevicular fluid, suggesting that the periodontium may act as an entry point for the virus and/or as a dissemination site. The preliminary observations prove infection potential of gi

[The use of tricalcium phosphate in the vital subtotal extirpation of the pulp].

The authors have proved the desirability of vital subtotal extirpation of the pulp in experiments and clinically. Exposure to tricalcium phosphate transformed the terminal portion of the root pulp into osseocement biologic filling, obturated the apical opening and thus prevented the inflammation in the periodontium and protected it from pathologic exposures.

[Necrotizing periodontal disease: an update].

The aim of this paper was to provide an update on necrotizing periodontal disease (NPD). Original papers on this subject published in English from January 2002 until December 2007 were located in MEDLINE/PubMed database. Other sources were taken from the references of the selected papers. The clinical features of NPD include necrosis and ulceration of the gingival margin and the interdental papilla. These signs are usually associated to halitosis, pain, spontaneous gingival bleeding, malaise and sometimes fever. NPD usually occurs in developing countries, but few cases have also been reported
