Ossifying granulomatous periostitis in the course of erythema nodosum.

The author records a case of ossifying periostitis of the tibia apparently due to erythema nodosum. This does not appear to have been recorded previously. The histology, aetiology and differential diagnosis are discussed. The mechanism is probably one of direct spread from skin to periosteum.

Reconstruction of a Thumb Defect Following Subungual Melanoma Resection Using Foucher's Flap.

Dear Editor, The main challenge in the treatment of subungual melanoma in situ is obtaining adequate oncological resection while preserving … mly accepted in the recent literature reports. Some authors recommend resection to the level of the periosteum (3,4), some include the periosteum (1), and some even perform a shave resection of the dorsal cortex of the distal phalanx (1). The reconstructive procedures also vary between authors, ranging from simple full thickness grafts (1,3,4) to toe free fl …

In search of the ideal periosteal flap for bone non-union: The chimeric fibula-periosteal flap.

UNLABELLED: Vascularised periosteal flaps may increase the union rates in recalcitrant long bone non-union. The fibula-periosteal chimeric flap utilises the periosteum raised on an independent periosteal vessel. This allows the periosteum to be inset freely around the osteotomy site, thereby facilitating bone consolidation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients underwent fibula-periosteal chimeric flaps (2016-2022) at the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit, UK. Preceding non-union 18.6 months, with mean bone gap of 7.5 cm. Patients underwent preoperative CT angiography to identify the periosteal b…

The Looi suture technique for anchoring the lateral tarsal strip to the lateral orbital wall.

INTRODUCTION: The lateral tarsal strip procedure (LTS) was first reported by Anderson and Gordy in 1979 for the management of paralytic or senile eyelid laxity. Since its description, the LTS procedure has been subject to several modifications by various authors. In this study, we described the Looi suture technique, a small modification in the technique of suturing the LTS to the lateral orbital wall periosteum. Using this technique, the surgeon achieves a larger area of contact between the anterior surface of the tarsal strip and the lateral orbital wall periosteum, promoting a stronger adhe…

Bioengineered periosteal progenitor cell sheets to enhance tendon-bone healing in a bone tunnel.

BACKGROUND: Tendon-bone tunnel healing is crucial for long term success in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The periosteum contains osteochondral progenitor cells that can differentiate into osteoblasts and chondroblasts during tendon-bone healing. We developed a scaffold-free method using polymerized fibrin-coated dishes to make functional periosteal progenitor cell (PPC) sheets. Bioengineered PPC sheets for enhancing tendon-bone healing were evaluated in an extra-articular bone tunnel model in rabbit. METHODS: PPC derived from rabbit tibia periosteum, cultivated on polymeriz…

Traction suture for canalicular lacerations.

Maintaining good wound closure in canalicular lacerations is difficult because of the horizontal tension exerted by the orbicularis muscle on the wound. A method of placing a deep medial canthal traction suture through the medial orbital periosteum to aid in maintaining good wound approximation is presented.

Vascularized Radial Periosteal Pedicled Flap for Recalcitrant Ulnar Nonunion in Children: Anatomical Study and Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric cases of bone nonunion are rare and often a result of complex local vascular limitations. The periosteum plays a key role in bone healing through its regenerative properties. Vascularized periosteal grafts have previously been effective in treating complex cases. This study explores the vascular anatomy of the radial periosteum supplied by the anterior interosseous vessels and introduces the vascularized radial periosteal graft (VRPG), successfully implemented in a case of ulnar nonunion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cadaveric studies of ten upper limbs were conducted under ×2.…

Retrovirus and periosteal osteogenic cells. Morphology study.

A cortical hyperostosis is induced by injection of myeloblastic virus MAV 2 (O) in direct contact with periosteum, in chicken just after hatching. It appears an hyperplasia of osteogenic cells of the endoperiosteum. The enchondral ossification develops in normal condition. This lesion is quite different from osteopetrosis.

A meningioma of the scalp that might have developed from a rudimentary meningocele.

Meningiomas of the skin are extremely rare. In this case of a congenital meningioma of the scalp, magnetic resonance imaging showed no communication to the meninges. The histological examination discovered a small group of meningioma cells in the periosteum, supporting the assumption that primary cutaneous meningiomas may develop from rudimentary meningoceles.

Garre's osteomyelitis of the mandible managed by nonsurgical re-endodontic treatment.

Chronic osteomyelitis with proliferative periostitis, known as Garre's osteomyelitis, is a type of osteomyelitis characterized by a distinctive gross thickening of the periosteum of bones. Peripheral reactive bone formation can be caused by mild irritation or infection. Garre's osteomyelitis is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and the mandible is more affected than the maxilla. The following is a case report of a 12-year-old female patient with Garre's osteomyelitis of the mandible due to an infection of a root canal-treated tooth. Without surgical intervention, the patient's sy…

A Novel Approach to Submandibular Gland Ptosis: Creation of a Platysma Muscle and Hyoid Bone Cradle.

Submandibular gland ptosis is a common impediment to obtaining superior surgical aesthetic results in neck lift surgery. Techniques for suspending the submandibular gland have been proposed, but these procedures have the drawbacks of disturbing the floor of the mouth mucosa and periosteum. We present an approach of submandibular gland suspension for the treatment of gland ptosis by employing a platysma and hyoid bone fascia cradle. Our technique was performed on cadaveric models. The platysma muscle and hyoid bone cradle for submandibular gland ptosis was created on the left side of the neck i…

Management of missile wounds of the cerebral dura mater: experience with 69 cases.

Over the period of seven months: from July 1991 to January 1992 sixty-nine patients with penetrating head war-injuries, were admitted in our hospital. Missile wounds of the dura mater require in most cases urgent operative management: watertight closure of the dura defects. However, a dilemma still exists as to the best material to be used to restore the missile dural defects. There are several possibilities: an autologous substitute as periosteum (pericranium) from surrounding, fascia of the temporalis muscle, fascia lata, or allograft transplant as lyophilised cerebral dura mater (lyodura). …

Longitudinal growth of the rabbit femur after vascular and periosteal interference.

Results are presented of a radiological study with metallic implants concerning the growth in length of the rabbit femur following longitudinal sectioning of the periosteum, with and without stripping, circumferential periosteal division, with and without stripping, and vascular interference. Periosteal sectioning (except in the case of longitudinal sectioning) had the effect of increasing the ultimate length of the femur. The distal epiphysial plate was stimulated after longitudinal sectioning with stripping; both growth plates were stimulated after circumferential periosteal sectioning, with…

Significance of the orbital floor in zygomatic injuries.

Fifty years after the publication of Harold Gillies' work, an assessment of zygomatic injuries is made, in the light of a half century of medical advances. Recent experience suggests that the fractured orbital floor is the commonest and most significant component of all zygomatic injuries. Exploration of 582 floors in the last 5 years revealed that over 20% had true blowout fractures, without damage to the orbital rim. A further 5% had torn periosteum with only minimal bony damage. Only two cases (0.3%) had fractures of the rim without a blown-out floor. The significance of floor damage is con…
