OBJECTIVE. T: O evaluate efficacy of vacuum instillation laparostomy in the treatment of victims with gunshot peritonitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed treatment outcomes in 103 victims with gunshot abdominal wounds complicated by peritonitis. All patients underwent multi-stage surgical treatment with vacuum-instillation laparostomy (VIL) in the main group (n=37) and vacuum-assisted laparostomy (VAL) in the control group (n=66). Negative pressure was 90 mm Hg due to high risk of bleeding following traumatic disease. The interval between debridement did not exceed 48 hours. VIL was carrie…

Coronaviruses (CoVs) are positive, single-stranded RNA viruses that can infect various animal species as well as humans. Particularly relevant for cats is the feline coronavirus (FCoV), which is widespread in cat populations worldwide. Infection with FCoV is usually asymptomatic. However, in multi-cat households, approximately 5-12% of FCoV-infected cats develop feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) due to mutations in the spike gene. FIP is an immune-mediated disease that previously was always fatal. These mutations result in a tropism shift from enterocytes to monocytes and macrophages. The as…

Background and Objectives: Vernix caseosa peritonitis (VCP) is rare. Nonspecific symptoms of acute abdomen during early puerperium make preoperative diagnosis of VCP challenging. We aimed to identify risk factors, early diagnosis and treatment options, and the association between the timing and severity of VCP diagnosis and maternal outcomes. Materials and Methods: We searched PubMed, PubMed Central, and Google Scholar. Articles were analyzed according to the PRISMA guidelines. The search items included: 'vernix caseosa peritonitis, 'vernix caseosa granuloma, 'maternal meconium peritonitis', '…

We report the case of a 71-year-old male with palpable and painful left inguinal mass who underwent open hernioplasty. During the operation, ~700 ml of ascitic fluid and multiple nodules on the peritoneum were observed upon incision of the hernia sac. Culture and pathological examination confirmed a diagnosis of peritoneal tuberculosis (TB). Abdominal TB is rarely presented as a hernia. We review ten cases of abdominal TB associated with abdominal hernias and discuss surgical techniques and further management options.

Tuberculosis (TB) peritonitis is one of the least common causes for puerperal fever. We report a case of pregnant woman in the early 20s who had a preterm vaginal delivery. Following delivery, the patient had persistent episodes of low-grade fever, gradual loss of appetite and lower abdominal distension. On evaluation with CT (positive for ascites, multiple lymph node enlargement and peritoneal thickening), ascitic fluid analysis (exudative with adenosine deaminase positive status) and cartridge-based nucleic acid amplification test (positive for mycobacterium tuberculli), she was diagnosed wi…

We report the case of a young, immunocompetent, non-pregnant woman diagnosed with acute abdomen 3 weeks after an ultrasound-guided transvaginal oocyte retrieval (TVOR). Peritoneal fluid, obtained during exploratory laparoscopy, yielded Mycoplasma hominis as the sole pathogen. The patient's symptoms and signs improved after 24-hour treatment with intravenous clindamycin, ampicillin and gentamycin. Complete resolution was achieved with oral doxycycline for 14 days.
