Toward Standards for Donor-Level Metadata Reporting in Human Tissue Research: Perspectives from Tissue Researchers.

INTRODUCTION: No widely adopted guidelines exist for collecting and reporting donor-level metadata in tissue-based research, limiting interpretability, reproducibility, and potentially introducing bias. This study aimed to inform ethical and appropriate metadata practices. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 investigators from the Human BioMolecular Atlas Program. Thematic analysis using inductively derived codes identified metadata elements and perspectives on their collection and reporting. RESULTS: Participants identified 80 metadata variables across six domains: de

Legacies and Relationships: Diverse Social Networks and BRCA1/2 Risk Management Decisions and Actions.

In families with hereditary breast/ovarian cancer, complex disease histories challenge established patterns of family communication and influence decision-making for clinical surveillance, genetic testing, and risk management. An interdisciplinary team examined longitudinal interview data from women with identified BRCA1/2 mutations to assess interactions within family and social networks about risk information communication and management. We used interpretive description to identify motivation, content, and derived benefit of these interactions. Participants discussed risk information and ma

Patient misconceptions and ethical challenges in radioactive iodine scanning and therapy.

The use and nature of radioactive iodine (RAI) are complex topics for patients with thyroid conditions to understand. Fear and anxiety over its use, misinformation in patient advocacy books and on the Internet, medical jargon, confusion regarding postscanning and posttreatment procedures, patient literacy, thyroid health status, and several other socioeconomic factors can create serious barriers to genuine informed consent in RAI scanning and treatment. The following discussion will review the origins of patient misconceptions and misinterpretations, including international differences in phys

Estimated Incubation Period for Zika Virus Disease.

Information about the Zika virus disease incubation period can help identify risk periods and local virus transmission. In 2015-2016, data from 197 symptomatic travelers with recent Zika virus infection indicated an estimated incubation period of 3-14 days. For symptomatic persons with symptoms >2 weeks after travel, transmission might be not travel associated.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Tools to Identify Anxiety Symptoms and Disorders in Persons with Dementia: a Systematic Review Update.

Limited anxiety tools validated against a diagnostic gold standard in the context of dementia have been identified. A systematic review update was completed to identify publications since 2017 describing tools to detect anxiety in persons with dementia compared to a diagnostic gold standard. The original search strategy was replicated in MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO. Pooled prevalence and diagnostic accuracy estimates were calculated based on three or more studies presenting comparable information from either the original or updated review search. No pooled estimates were calculated in the or

Hepatitis A Exposure Response and Outbreak Prevention in a Large Urban Jail - Los Angeles County, California, May-July 2023.

Correctional settings provide a high-risk environment for hepatitis A transmission because of the high proportion of homelessness and injection drug use among persons who are incarcerated. On May 30, 2023, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health informed the Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control (CDSC) unit of the Los Angeles County Jail system that a symptomatic incarcerated person had received a positive test result for acute hepatitis A. Upon learning the next day that the patient was a food handler, CDSC staff members identified 5,830 potential contacts of the index patient,

Hypnotically Informed Psychotherapy: Erickson and Beyond.

As Milton Hyland Erickson told us, "Each person is a unique individual. Hence, psychotherapy should be formulated to meet the uniqueness of the individual's needs, rather than tailoring the person to fit the Procrustean bed of a hypothetical theory of human behavior." Erickson's mastery and creative genius have invited clinicians to imitate and emulate his style of working and identify themselves as "Ericksonian." But what does it mean to be Ericksonian? Utilizing the microdynamics of trance induction, and the six "core competencies" Ericksonian therapy as the foundation, this paper notes how

Constructing Menopause on Sweden's Official Healthcare Platform: A Critical Discourse Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Menopause will personally affect half the population and can cause severe symptoms and increase long-term health risks. Despite this, gaps in menopausal knowledge and unequal access to menopausal healthcare have been identified in Sweden. Limited knowledge among women undermines informed choice and delays care-seeking. To address these gaps, this study purports to critically examine how menopause is represented in Swedish digital health communication and to explore the implications for informed choice and equitable care. In Sweden, the Patient Act and national quality standards gua

Similarities and differences in borderline and organic personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has shown that brain injury patients with Organic Personality Disorder (OPD) may display "borderline" traits due to prefrontal damage, and their personality structure may be unstable and close to a borderline personality organisation. They may have few general neuropsychological dysfunctions but specific executive deficits. Similar deficits have been found in patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The objective of this study was to identify differences and similarities between the neuropsychological and personality profiles of BPD and OPD patients.

Co-occurrence patterns of multiple health risk behaviors and transition dynamics across adolescence: a five-wave latent class and transition analysis of the Korea youth health panel survey (2019-2023).

PURPOSE: Multiple health risk behaviors (MHRBs) co-occur during adolescence and evolve across developmental stages, yet longitudinal person-centered analyses remain limited in Asian contexts. This study aimed to identify latent classes of co-occurring MHRBs across five annual waves and examine transition dynamics and predictors of favorable transitions among Korean adolescents. METHODS: The data from 5051 adolescents (25,255 person-waves) in the Korea Youth Health Panel Survey (KYHPS, 2019-2023) were analyzed for alcohol use, physical inactivity, poor diet, and short sleep duration. Latent cl

The impact of interview quality on risk assessment of young people who sexually offend.

Forensic risk assessments are used to determine sanctions, identify recidivism risk and inform implementation of risk reduction strategies. The best way to gather reliable data to inform decisions is important and the focus of this mixed-method study. Forty-five experienced professionals performed a risk assessment involving a young person who sexually offended (YPSO). They read a good-quality or a poor-quality interview and collateral information. Under half (42.2%) of participants provided the expected risk ratings. Some participants misidentified elements of good-quality interviewing (e.g.

Housing Subsidies and Housing Stability are Associated with Better HIV Medical Outcomes Among Persons Who Experienced Homelessness and Live with HIV and Mental Illness or Substance Use Disorder.

Among 958 applicants to a supportive housing program for low-income persons living with HIV (PLWH) and mental illness or a substance use disorder, we assessed impacts of housing placement on housing stability, HIV care engagement, and viral suppression. Surveillance and administrative datasets provided medical and residence information, including stable (e.g., rental assistance, supportive housing) and unstable (e.g., emergency shelter) government-subsidized housing. Sequence analysis identified a "quick stable housing" pattern for 67% of persons placed by this program within 2 years, vs. 28%

Preliminary development of a multidomain behavioral intervention for primary prevention of dementia in midlife: a qualitative study of focus group discussions.

OBJECTIVES: 45% of global cases of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are attributable to 14 risk factors, but population adherence to protective health behaviors is low. The goal of this study was to use qualitative methods to develop a personalized health education intervention (TEACH: Tailored Education for Aging and Cognitive Health), grounded in the Health Belief Model. METHODS: Guided by a phenomenographic approach, we conducted six focus groups (N = 3-6 participants each) of midlife adults, presenting fictional health information including images conveying ADRD risk and d
