Systematic review of ultrasound-guided central venous catheter placement-related complications in neonates and infants aged <12 months.

OBJECTIVE: Although ultrasound can be considered an assistant method, successful placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) in infants is … ter kinking, threading, and malpositioning problems, venous thrombosis, catheter-related infection, phlebitis, and cardiac tamponade. RESULTS: Eleven studies involving 2097 patients were included in the final analysis. The odds of inadvertent arterial puncture, and catheter kinking, threading, and malpositioning problems were lower in the ultrasound group …

[Superficial pseudophlebitis in a HIV seropositive child].

A case of "hyperalgesic pseudothrombophlebitis" in an hemophilic child with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is reported. Known causes such as associated blood clotting defect, collagen vascular disease, infection and homocystinuria were ruled out. Five similar cases were reported in 1985, in homosexual American adult males with AIDS, in whom venography did not show evidence of venous occlusion. Recovery occurred spontaneously and progressively, while the patients were given an anticoagulant therapy. Despite our hemophilic patient did not receive any anticoagulant treatment, a simila…

Retinal vasculitis associated with Crohn's disease.

Although systemic vasculitis can be a complication of inflammatory bowel disease at several locations (skin, eyes, brain, mesentery, and lung) the association of retinal vasculitis with Crohn's disease is rare. We studied a 26-year-old woman with biopsy-demonstrated Crohn's disease who developed a severe bilateral retinal arteritis and phlebitis, with acute loss of vision.

[Clinical and paraclinical identification by various imaging technics of congenital anomalies of the inferior vena cava (apropos of 4 cases)].

Four cases of anomalies of the inferior vena cava (IVC) were studied by two noninvasive imaging techniques: real-time ultrasonography and computed tomography. These techniques were used alone in 1 case of left IVC to determine the diagnosis. The other 3 cases were studied initially by phlebography: left IVC with iliac phlebitis; double IVC, also with iliac phlebitis, and a special case in which it was not clear whether the diagnosis was agenesis of the IVC or postnatal caval thrombosis. The two patients with recent iliac vein thrombosis were treated by heparin, but the other two received no pa…

Encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus infection of the femoral vein of newborn mice.

The EMC virus was found to infect and injure the femoral veins of newborn mice. EMC viral crystals were found in the advential fibroblasts of these veins. In view of the extensive damage observed in the extremely small amount of tissue examined electron microscopically, the extent of the viral phlebitis must have been considerable. The relationship of these findings to the pathogenesis of thrombophlebitis in man provokes interesting speculations.

Safety of peripheral 3% hypertonic saline bolus administration for neurologic emergency.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Hypertonic sodium chloride (HTS) is used for emergent treatment of acute cerebral edema and other neurologic emergenci … ion for use and patient demographics. The primary safety outcome was incidence of extravasation and phlebitis within one hour of HTS administration. RESULTS: There were 206 patients receiving 3% HTS who were screened, and 37 patients met inclusion criteria. The most common reason for exclusion was administration at a rate < 250 m/h. The median age was 60 ( …

A TET2 rs3733609 C/T genotype is associated with predisposition to the myeloproliferative neoplasms harboring JAK2(V617F) and confers a proliferative potential on erythroid lineages.

The catheter site was also evaluated for phlebitis, and a rectal temperature was obtained in each dog every 6 h. Acute Fulminant Systemic Granulocytic Vasculitis Involving Arteries and Veins in Vacuoles, E1 Enzyme, X-Linked, Autoinflammatory, Somatic (VEXAS) Syndrome: An Autopsy Case Report.

Vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, Autoinflammatory, Somatic (VEXAS) syndrome is a disease concept characterized by UBA1 mutation that was first proposed in 2020. We report an autopsy case of VEXAS syndrome that was retrospectively diagnosed 11 years later through genetic analysis of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) bone marrow tissue. The patient was a 65-year-old male with hepatitis C who presented with general fatigue followed by fever 2 weeks later. Shortly before death, phlebitis of the extremities and marked leukocytosis became evident. The patient died within 3 weeks of symptom onse…

Behçet's disease revealed by double peripheral arterial involvement.

We report the case of a 62-year-old man with Behçet's disease revealed by double aneurysmal involvement of the posterior tibial and popliteal arteries. The diagnosis was suggested because of repeated phlebitis, buccal aphthous ulcerations, and results of human leukocyte antigen gene typing. The different arguments leading to the diagnosis of Behçet's disease and appropriate treatment are presented.
