Intrinsic Negative Magnetoresistance and Broadband Photoresponse in Magnetic van der Waals Crystal TaFeTe2.

2D van der Waals (vdW) materials with broken symmetry, such as MM'Te2 (where M═Nb, Ta, and M' = Fe, Co, Ni), have attracted considerable research interest due to their unique magnetic structures and optical-phonon-induced phase transitions, providing a versatile platform for discovering novel physical phenomena. Here, we report the synthesis of TaFeTe2 single crystals that can be mechanically exfoliated to the 2D limit. The as-grown crystals display characteristic spin-glass behavior and intrinsic unsaturated negative magnetoresistance up to 9 T, likely arising from the orbital effect associat

Molecular Dynamics Insights into Substrate-Induced Gradient Stiffness and Vibrational Modes in P3AT Thin Films.

In this study, we reveal the emergence of a tri-regime gradient in stiffness across substrate-supported poly(3-alkylthiophene) (P3AT) thin films, comprising an adsorbed region, a bulk-like region, and a free surface region. The stiffness distribution is found to be largely independent of the degree of polymerization but is significantly modulated by side chain length and temperature. Specifically, longer side chains (bead count = 4) expand the adsorbed and free surface regions, while elevating temperature above the glass transition leads to an order-of-magnitude reduction in stiffness. Phonon

Electronic contribution of Frenkel defects to thermal conductivity in body centred cubic transition metals from first-principles study.

Body centred cubic (BCC) transition metals are of high interest for nuclear applications, where they are subject to high radiation damage, which causes the material's properties to decay. Measuring the electrical and thermal properties of these materials after irradiation poses challenges due to sample size, activity, and cost of running the experiments. Traditional methods of measuring thermal properties require bulk samples. Newer measuring techniques were developed for smaller samples, but they have their limitations. Therefore, a new First Principles' method was developed to predict the el

Computing the energy dissipation of suspended and supported acoustic cavities in nanoscale MoS2 films.

The confinement of elastic waves in nanoscale cavities is important for creating ultrahigh-frequency (terahertz) mechanical resonances. We present molecular dynamics simulations to compute the energy dissipation of these resonances in supported and suspended nanoscale films. We used MoS2 as a representative film, which is a layered crystal whose thickness can be scaled down to a few atoms. We found that coupling the film to a substrate significantly modifies its energy dissipation, and thus the fundamental limits on its quality factor (Q). Changing the energy dissipation pathway from in-plane

How Cation Rigidity and Dipole Moment Prolong Hot-Carrier Lifetime in 2D Perovskites.

2D Dion-Jacobson perovskites are promising solar cells due to high efficiency and stability yet are limited by poor charge dynamics and energy loss. Using density functional theory, ab initio molecular dynamics, and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations to explore the cation rigidity and dipole moment of cations can extend hot-carrier lifetime and slow down charge recombination. Specifically, increasing the cation dipole moment strengthens hydrogen bonding between the organic spacer and the inorganic lattice, while a rigid cation enhances lattice stiffness. These factors strengthen therm

Squeezing terahertz light into nanovolumes: nanoantenna enhanced terahertz spectroscopy (NETS) of semiconductor quantum dots.

Terahertz spectroscopy has vast potentialities in sensing a broad range of elementary excitations (e.g., collective vibrations of molecules, phonons, excitons, etc.). However, the large wavelength associated with terahertz radiation (about 300 μm at 1 THz) severely hinders its interaction with nano-objects, such as nanoparticles, nanorods, nanotubes, and large molecules of biological relevance, practically limiting terahertz studies to macroscopic ensembles of these compounds, in the form of thick pellets of crystallized molecules or highly concentrated solutions of nanomaterials. Here we show…

Ultrafast anisotropic valleytronics in SnSe.

Understanding and controlling valley-specific light-matter interactions and non-equilibrium microscopic coupling mechanisms lie at the heart of valleytronics. Due to their strong in-plane anisotropy, which enables polarization-controlled optical transitions to distinct non-degenerate valleys, group-IV monochalcogenides have been recently proposed as promising candidates for next-generation valleytronic materials. However, ultrafast non-equilibrium dynamics following the optical preparation of valley-polarized states have received limited attention in these systems. Here, combining time- and an

Nanotwin-Engineered (Sb,Bi)2Si2Te6 for Robust and High-Efficiency Layered Thermoelectrics.

Layered chalcogenides, while efficiently suppressing phonon transport via weak van der Waals bonding, inherently suffer from poor mechanical robustness. Developing these materials that exhibit both high conversion efficiency and mechanical robustness is a critical challenge for their reliable device deployment. Here, we demonstrate a shear-strain engineering strategy that utilizes dense nanotwins as a dual-functional structural unit to solve this intrinsic limitation. Using (Sb,Bi)2Si2Te6 as a model system, we introduce high-density nanotwins via high-energy ball milling. Mechanically, these n

Asymmetric Spin Relaxation Dynamics of Electrons and Holes in CsPbI3: An Ab Initio Quantum Dynamics Study.

Lead halide perovskites are promising for spintronics due to their strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Experiments show asymmetric, temperature-dependent spin relaxation in γ-CsPbI3, with electrons relaxing faster than holes via the Elliott-Yafet carrier-phonon mechanism. Ab initio non-adiabatic molecular dynamics with SOC and half-electron correction reproduce this asymmetry. The difference arises from band-edge orbital character: the conduction band minimum (CBM) is Pb-p-dominated and spin-mixed under SOC, while the valence band maximum remains spin-pure due to s-type Pb and I p orbitals. Spin

Discovery and Prediction on a Family of Hard Superconductors with Kagome Lattice: XY3 Compounds.

The search for and design of superconductors with both Kagome lattice and hardness is a challenging and frontier research topic. This work utilizes structure predictions to discover the Kagome lattice in NaSi3_P6/mmm phase of NaxSiy (x, y = 1-3). For a comprehensive understanding of XY3_P6/mmm, other atoms such as X = Li, Na, Cs and Y = B, Si, Ge are included. Superconducting critical temperatures (Tc) of XY3 compounds are calculated between 0 and 20 GPa and found to be 30.54 K for CsB3 at 0 GPa, indicating that electron-phonon coupling, phonon softening, linewidths, and electron density at th

Rashba effect on finite temperature magnetotransport in a dissipative quantum dot transistor with electronic and polaronic interactions.

The Rashba spin-orbit coupling induced quantum transport through a quantum dot embedded in a two-arm quantum loop of a quantum dot transistor is studied at finite temperature in the presence of electron-phonon and Hubbard interactions, an external magnetic field and quantum dissipation. The Anderson-Holstein-Caldeira-Leggett-Rashba model is used to describe the system and several unitary transformations are employed to decouple some of the interactions and the transport properties are calculated using the Keldysh technique. It is shown that the Rashba coupling alone separates the spin-up and s

Superconductivity and charge density waves in graphene-based materials.

Graphene-based materials have emerged as a versatile platform for exploring strongly correlated quantum phenomena, particularly superconductivity (SC) and charge density waves (CDWs), owing to their highly tunable electronic structure, reduced dimensionality, and sensitivity to external perturbations. While pristine monolayer graphene is not intrinsically superconducting and exhibits limited propensity toward charge ordering, a variety of engineered graphene systems have demonstrated remarkable SC and CDW phases through mechanisms involving doping, intercalation, proximity coupling, strain, an

Describing materials via interpretable machine learning: the example of superconductivity.

Modeling materials properties is often challenged by the intricate interplay of multiple underlying physical processes that govern materials behavior. Machine learning (ML) approaches may capture such intricacy more effectively than physics-based models, as they can identify nontrivial correlations based on appropriate data. However, their flexibility often comes at the expense of physical interpretability. Here, we employ the sure-independence screening and sparsifying operator (SISSO) symbolic-regression method to identify an interpretable analytical equation for the superconducting critical

Gradient engineering enabled thermoelectric performance optimization in LaP/LaAs heterostructures.

Within condensed matter physics and materials science, the synergistic effect of band engineering and phonon engineering can greatly enhance the thermoelectric performance of functional materials. In this study, we focus on the gradient engineering in a LaP/LaAs heterostructure and systematically investigate its structure, lattice dynamics, and thermoelectric properties through first-principles calculations. The interface modulation of the heterostructure changes the phonon dispersion curves, leading to the collective vibrational behavior of the low-frequency optical branches and their strong

Excited-State Dynamics of Bis(tetraethylammonium) Di-µ-bromo-dibromodicuprate(I) Thin Films.

Organic-inorganic halocuprates based on monovalent copper are promising luminescent compounds for optoelectronic applications; however, their relaxation processes in the excited electronic state are severely underexplored. In this contribution, we prepare thin films of bis(tetraethylammonium) di-µ-bromo-dibromodicuprate(I) [N(C2H5)4]2[Cu2Br4], abbreviated (TEA)2Cu2Br4, which features a "molecular salt" structure containing discrete [Cu2Br4]2- anions. Investigation of crystal field effects for the spectral broadening of Yb3+-doped Lu x Y2-x O3 sesquioxide crystals.

The investigation of crystal field effects is significant for elucidating the spectral characteristics of Yb3+-doped sesquioxide crystals for ultrafast laser generation. The narrow spectra of Yb3+-doped single sesquioxide crystals limit the generation of ultrafast lasers; in this study, the Y3+ ions were introduced into Lu2O3 single crystals by the employment of ion replacement to broaden the spectra. To analyze the spectral broadening, the responsible crystal field parameters (CFPs) were calculated. The conversion of the host dominant ion and the distortion of the ligand affected the values a

Preliminary Tc Calculations for Iron-Based Superconductivity in NaFeAs, LiFeAs, FeSe and Nanostructured FeSe/SrTiO3 Superconductors.

Many theoretical models of iron-based superconductors (IBSC) have been proposed, but the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) calculations based on these models are usually missing. We have chosen two models of iron-based superconductors from the literature and computed the Tc values accordingly; recently two models have been announced which suggest that the superconducting electron concentration involved in the pairing mechanism of iron-based superconductors may have been underestimated and that the antiferromagnetism and the induced xy potential may even have a dramatic amplification
