Previous work has indicated that people do not use their judgment of a target's speed to determine where to hit it. Instead, they use their judgment of the target's changing position and an expected speed (based on the speed of previous targets). In the present study we investigate whether people also ignore the target's apparent direction of motion, and use the target's changing position and an expected direction of motion instead. Subjects hit targets that moved in slightly different directions across a screen. Sometimes the targets disappeared after 150 ms, long before the subjects could re

In order to extract information from the visual world, it is necessary to bring the images of objects of interest to rest on the high acuity part of the retina, the fovea. Primates, including humans, use two types of eye movement, saccades and smooth pursuit, to accomplish this. While classically conceived of as being separate and distinct, various lines of evidence indicate a close linkage between these two eye movement systems. They are often investigated at a behavioural level by presenting subjects with single targets to saccade or to track. We investigated the effect of presenting a singl

Using a modification of the computer period analysis of the EEG (Aladjov and Daskalova 1987) we studied the late after-effects (until the 30th min) in human EEG (monopolar leads at F1, C3, P3 and 01) following two kinds of influences: a) short interoceptive one: 3 min hyperventilation (HV) and b) a series of 5 trains of visual light flashes (VS), presented in 5-7 min intervals. The changes in the ongoing EEG in the 2nd min after each VS and in intervals of 5 min after HV were compared with the values before the stimulation. VS did not elicit long-lasting EEG after-effects, which characterized

BACKGROUND: Digital light processor (DLP)-based patterned illumination enables targeted optogenetic stimulation with high speed and flexibility. While these systems are routinely characterized by optical contrast and spatial resolution, the functional impact of residual light leakage on biological samples remains frequently overlooked. Establishing thresholds and mitigation strategies for this unintended illumination is essential for ensuring the reliability and precision of targeted photostimulation assays.
NEW METHOD: We quantitatively characterized parasitic illumination in a standard DLP-

A complete empirical characterization of color discrimination in three dimensions has long remained out of reach. Classical studies, beginning with MacAdam's ellipses, provided local measurements in restricted chromatic planes, but a spatially dense and internally consistent mapping of discrimination structure across full color space has not yet been achieved. Here, we present such a systematic three-dimensional measurement of color discrimination in the standardized sRGB stimulus space. Eight observers measured discrimination regions at 35 reference colors distributed on a body-centered cubic

Growing interest in noninvasive neuromodulation posits 40 Hz sensory stimulation as a potential intervention for Alzheimer's disease. Early studies suggested that 40 Hz visual flicker entrains gamma activity and reduces amyloid pathology; however, later work found either absent entrainment or even increased amyloid burden, revealing strong dependence on disease stage, network integrity, and stimulation parameters. Initial clinical investigations suggest that 40 Hz stimulation is safe, well-tolerated, and capable of modulating cortical network dynamics and improving cognition, despite limited e

Perception is shaped by sequential biases operating on multiple timescales, including short-term serial dependence, medium-term central tendency bias (CTB), and long-term effects like the cardinal bias in orientation judgments. Although serial dependence has been widely observed in orientation judgments, CTB has not been reliably demonstrated despite its prevalence in other stimulus types. In this study, we investigated how these biases co-occur by comparing orientation judgments in two conditions: one with stimuli sampled from a full circular uniform distribution and another from a restricted

Vision may seem continuous, but it is frequently disrupted, by internal processes, such as blinks and fast eye-movements, and by external foreground clutter obscuring background objects. Yet when a bicycle passes behind a bush, we maintain a strong sense that it has not vanished, but persists, continuing its unseen motion. Using an indirect probe technique, we show that the visual system maintains, for at least 1 s, a rich perceptual representation of objects moving behind occluders. We created the impression of two disks moving behind a visible occluder, and after 1 s participants judged the

Understanding how birds perceive and recognize visual objects remains a fundamental question in neuroscience. The entopallium, a key node in the avian tectofugal pathway, has long been implicated in complex visual processing, yet its internal functional architecture remains incompletely understood. In this study, neuronal activity in the pigeon entopallium was systematically mapped using controlled visual stimuli that independently varied in color, shape, and motion. Recordings revealed marked hue selectivity that remained invariant across luminance levels, pronounced orientation tuning in res

Physiological and psychophysical evidence suggests that the visual system represents object outlines using prominent curvature features, particularly regions of extreme curvature (convex maxima and concave minima). These curvature extrema often coincide with points of high informational content ("surprisal"), but this relationship is only correlational. It remains unclear whether the visual system explicitly encodes curvature extrema or instead prioritizes the most informative contour locations. To address this, we conducted two shape-matching experiments comparing the roles of curvature extre

Object recognition relies on neural invariance to changes in position and size, yet the underlying mechanisms in humans remain uncertain due to the challenges that accompany single-unit recordings in cortical areas. We conducted the first single-unit recordings investigating position and size invariance in the human lateral occipital complex (LO) using two microelectrode arrays implanted in distinct LO subregions of a single patient. Our findings reveal that LO neurons exhibit strong shape tuning. Receptive fields were smaller than previously reported in literature. Time-resolved correlational

This case report describes a rare instance of reflex seizures in a 4-year-old boy with a complex medical history, including total anomalous pulmonary venous connection and developmental disabilities. The patient experienced seizures triggered exclusively by a specific visual stimulus: the transition scene from the Disney castle to the Pixar lamp in Disney-Pixar movies. Video electroencephalography (EEG) revealed biparasagittal rhythmic delta waves and diffuse slowing, suggesting parietal involvement and complex cortical processing. The findings highlight the individualized nature of reflex epi

Neurons in parietal cortex exhibit task-related activity during decision-making tasks. However, it remains unclear how long-term training to perform different tasks over months or even years shapes neural computations and representations. We examine lateral intraparietal area (LIP) responses during a visual motion delayed-match-to-category task. We consider two pairs of male macaque monkeys with different training histories: one trained only on the categorization task, and another first trained to perform fine motion-direction discrimination (i.e., pretrained). We introduce a novel analytical

Our sensory system is able to build a unified perception of the world, which although rich, is limited and inaccurate. Sometimes, features from different objects are erroneously combined. At the neural level, the role of the parietal cortex in feature integration is well-known. However, the brain dynamics underlying correct and incorrect feature integration are less clear. To explore the temporal dynamics of feature integration, we studied the modulation of different frequency bands in trials in which feature integration was correct or incorrect. Participants responded to the color of a shape

Predictive tracking demonstrates our ability to maintain a line of vision on moving objects even when they temporarily disappear. Models of smooth pursuit eye movements posit that our brain achieves this ability by directly streamlining motor programming from continuously updated sensory motion information. To test this hypothesis, we obtained sensory motion representation from multivariate electroencephalogram activity while human participants covertly tracked a temporarily occluded moving stimulus with their eyes remaining stationary at the fixation point. The sensory motion representation o

The pattern electroretinogram (PERG) reflects the electrical activity of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) and has become the most used technology to assess RGC function in experimental models of glaucoma and optic neuropathies. We describe a novel method for obtaining user-friendly, robust PERG simultaneously from each eye using asynchronous binocular stimulation and one-channel acquisition of signals recorded from a subcutaneous needle in the snout.
