Examining Exercise-Related Cognitive Errors and Social Support for Physical Activity in Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Worry about fetal health and lack of social support are commonly reported barriers to physical activity during pregnancy. Exercise-related cognitive errors (ECEs; eg, modifiable cognitions that cause individuals to catastrophize barriers to exercise) may have an independent association with physical activity and influence the relationship between social support and worry with physical activity. This study examined whether maternal-related worry, social support (from family and friends), ECEs, and their interactions differentiated the physical activity of pregnant individuals at 3 d

A Comparative Study of the Presence of the Palmaris Longus Tendon Using Physical and Ultrasound Examination.

Introduction The palmaris longus muscle (PLM), located in the forearm's anterior compartment, plays an essential role in wrist flexion. Its tendon is often used for grafting because of its accessibility and minimal function. However, its anatomy varies, with congenital absence being the most common variation. This study aims to detect the incidence of the palmaris longus tendon (PLT) and compare physical examination methods with standard ultrasonography, as previous studies have only utilized physical examinations. Methods In this study, 61 participants were examined bilaterally (122 wrists) u…

An examination of physical violence against women and its justification in development settings in Uganda.

This paper uses data from a community cross-sectional survey to examine the factors that are associated with justification of physical violence against women. Results indicate that respondents who were married at the time of the survey were less likely (OR = 0.29; CI = 0.17-0.52) to agree that it is justified for a man to physically assault his partner that their counterparts who were single. The likelihood to justify physical violence was less likely to happen among respondents with primary education (OR = 0.49; CI = 0.39-0.62), secondary education (OR = 0.40; CI = 0.31-0.53) and vocation or

Variation in Preparticipation Screening Medical Questionnaires and Physical Examinations Across Canadian Universities.

Pre-participation screening of athletes to prevent sudden cardiac arrest or death is endorsed by international guidelines. Standardized histories and physical examinations are recommended to optimize effectiveness. To assess current screening practices across Canada in the university athlete population, we sought to analyze the preparticipation screening form of all universities. A comparative analysis to recommendations from the American Heart Association (AHA), European Society of Cardiology (ESC), and the Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (PPE-4) was conducted. Pre-participation forms fr…

Pleural ultrasound as an adjunct to physical examination in the preoperative evaluation of lung cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: Preoperative evaluation of patients with suspected or confirmed lung cancer consists of clinical and radiological staging. Malignant pleural effusion is a poor prognosticator in non-small-cell lung cancer. Pleural ultrasound (PU) allows for the assessment of pleural effusion, providing real-time guidance for its aspiration and cytological analysis. Pleural Ultrasonography in Lung Cancer (PULC) as an adjunct to physical examination has the potential to improve preoperative staging of non-small-cell lung cancer during first surgical encounter by allowing the evaluation of previously …

Medical educators' perspectives of teaching physical examinations using ultrasonography at the undergraduate level.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography is increasingly used for teaching physical examination in medical schools. This study seeks the opinions of educators as to which physical examinations would be most enhanced by the addition of ultrasonography. We also asked when ultrasound-aided physical examination teaching could have deleterious effects if used outside its intended scope. METHODS: All of the educators from the University of Calgary Master Teacher Program were invited to complete a 22-item paper-based survey. Survey items were generated independently by two investigators, with input from an exper…
