Common dermatoses in moderately pigmented skin: uncommon presentations.

Several common dermatoses appear different in people of color. Most international literature, especially the reputed textbooks, are replete with photographs of skin diseases in fair-skinned patients. The orientation of Western dermatologists to common diseases in pigmented skin therefore is needed. The reverse is also true. Dermatologists who work in pigmented skin communities are known to have initial problems with fair skin. It is therefore important to have a judicious balance of entities seen in both of these skin types in major international literature, especially in textbooks. In additio

The Inhibition of Melanogenesis Via the PKA and ERK Signaling Pathways by Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Extract in B16F10 Melanoma Cells and Artificial Human Skin Equivalents.

Abnormal melanin synthesis results in several hyperpigmentary disorders such as freckles, melanoderma, age spots, and other related conditions. In this study, we investigated the antimelanogenic effects of an extract from the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (CE) and potential mechanisms responsible for its inhibitory effect in B16F10, normal human epidermal melanocyte cells, and human skin-equivalent models. The CE extract showed significant dose-dependent inhibitory effects on α-melanocyte-stimulating, hormone-induced melanin synthesis in cells. Additionally, the CE extract exhibited sup

Corneal diagnostic procedures.

The cornea is the anterior, transparent portion of the fibrous tunic of the eye. It is continuous with the sclera at a transition called the limbus. In healthy conditions, the transparency of the cornea is maintained by the smooth, nonkeratinized, squamous epithelium, which is further enhanced by the precorneal tear film, the lack of corneal vascularization or pigmentation, the size and regular arrangement of the collagen fibrils that make up the corneal stroma, and the relative dehydration of the cornea (which is maintained by the endothelium and epithelium). The cornea can respond to adverse

Spectrum of reticulate flexural and acral pigmentary disorders in northern India.

Reticulate pigmentary disorders are rare in India. Only 15 cases of reticulate acropigmentation of Kitamura (RAPK) and 9 cases of Dowling-Degos disease (DDD) have been reported previously. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no earlier report of acropigmentation of Dohi. We herein describe 10 patients with various reticulate pigmentary abnormalities: 6 with RAPK, 2 with DDD, 1 with RAPK-DDD overlap, and 1 with acropigmentation of Dohi. Palmar pits and/or breaks in epidermal ridge pattern were absent in 2 of 6 patients with RAPK. A 23-year-old male patient had RAPK-DDD overlap. Periorb

Ineffective treatment of refractory melasma and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation by Q-switched ruby laser.

BACKGROUND: Melasma and postinflammatory pigmentation are cosmetic problems with limited options for treatment. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether selective photothermolysis of pigmented cells by Q-switched ruby laser treatment would produce clinical benefit in these disorders. METHODS: Eight subjects with melasma or postinflammatory hyperpigmentation refractory to traditional treatments were treated with Q-switched ruby laser pulses (694 nm, 40 nanoseconds) at fluences of 15-7.5 J/cm2, and followed. Histology was obtained before and after treatment. RESULTS: Regardless of fluence, no permanen

Quantitative Analysis of Planarian Pigmentation.

The ommochrome and porphyrin body pigments that give freshwater planarians their brown color are produced by specialized dendritic cells located just beneath the epidermis. During embryonic development and regeneration, differentiation of new pigment cells gradually darkens newly formed tissue. Conversely, prolonged light exposure ablates pigment cells through a porphyrin-based mechanism similar to the one that causes light sensitivity in rare human disorders called porphyrias. Here, we describe a novel program using image-processing algorithms to quantify relative pigment levels in live anima

New data on hyperpigmentation disorders.

Recently visible light (VL) and vascularization triggered by infrared light (IR) play a role in hyperpigmentation disorders of the skin. The aim of this article is to provide an update on the aetiology of hyperpigmentation disorders and means of prevention against UV, visible (VL) and infrared light (IR). The author conducted a literature review of the most recent data about hyperpigmentation disorders and means of prevention and protection. VL impacts on pigmentation, especially in individuals with phototype III, IV or V and also causes the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), erythem…

Extension Phase of a Multi-Center, Randomized, Blinded Clinical Study Evaluating the Efficacy and Safety of a Novel Topical Product for Facial Dyschromia.

BACKGROUND: Dyschromia can be associated with increased production and/or reduced clearance of pigmentation in the skin. Multiple pathways are involved in causality. A novel topical product was recently developed, which contains actives that have been validated through in-vitro and clinical studies to counteract pigmentation related to photodamage, PIH, and melasma. This study further evaluates the safety and efficacy of this product for facial dyschromia during an additional 3-month extension period following the completion of the previous 12-week multi-center trial.  Study Design: Subje

Generation of skin tone and pigmented region-modified images using a pigment discrimination model trained with an optical approach.

BACKGROUND: Skin tone and pigmented regions, associated with melanin and hemoglobin, are critical indicators of skin condition. While most prior research focuses on pigment analysis, the capability to simulate diverse pigmentation conditions could greatly broaden the range of applications. However, current methodologies have limitations in terms of numerical control and versatility. METHODS: We introduce a hybrid technique that integrates optical methods with deep learning to produce skin tone and pigmented region-modified images with numerical control. The pigment discrimination model produc

Ultraviolet light and hyperpigmentation in healing wounds.

The concept of permanent hyperpigmentation in wounds following ultraviolet light exposure during the postoperative period has found a place in plastic surgical literature but has not been documented. This study evaluates the effect of ultraviolet light on healing wounds in paraplegics. It failed to confirm permanent alteration in pigmentation response to ultraviolet exposure and suggests that other factors are of greater importance in the development of hyperpigmentation in the healing wound.

"Transient pseudo-lentigines sign" in burrowing bug pigmentation.

Cutaneous pigmentation due to the arthropod, Cydnidae (a.k.a. burrowing bug), is increasingly being reported in the literature. The transient nature of this pigmentation probably contributes to its underreporting. We report a case of an 8-year-old girl with a sudden onset of hyperpigmented lesions on her index finger, face, and neck due to burrowing bugs. We propose the term "transient pseudo-lentigines sign" to better describe this fleeting arthropod-induced pigmentation.
