Experimentally Induced Selenosis in Yellow-Bellied Slider Turtles ( Trachemys scripta scripta).

Selenosis, or selenium toxicosis, occurs in wildlife and livestock, usually because of excessive intake of selenium via selenium-containing plants. Although it is known that wild slider turtles can accumulate large amounts of selenium, little is known about how selenium exposure may affect these reptiles. In this study, the authors report histopathologic changes in yellow-bellied sliders ( Trachemys scripta scripta) caused by experimental exposure to selenomethionine. Microscopic changes in kidney and claw tissue were most significant and resembled those reported in birds. Turtles in the selen

Photosensitization in sheep fed Ammi majus (Bishop's weed) seed.

Ammi majus (bishop's weed) grows on the coastal region of southern United States and in other parts of the world. This plant causes severe photosensitization in livestock and probably contributes to the severe photosensitization outbreaks seen in Texas. Sheep were fed finely ground seed of A majus via stomach tube at dose rates of 1, 2, 4, and 8 g/kg of body weight and exposed to sunlight. The single dose of 8 g/kg produced severe clinical signs (in 24 to 48 hours): cloudy cornea, conjunctivokeratitis, photophobia, and edema of the muzzle, ears, and vulva. Daily dosing at 2 and 4 g/kg produced

Parasitic Plant-Host Interactions: Molecular Mechanisms and Agricultural Resistance Strategies.

Obligate parasitic plants, particularly members of the Orobanchaceae family, including Striga and Orobanche, greatly devastate crop production. Here, we synthesize recent advances in understanding the molecular and ecological dynamics underlying parasitic plant-host interactions, focusing on critical stages of parasitism: germination, host detection, haustorium formation, and resource extraction. Orobanchaceous parasites exploit host-derived strigolactones (SLs) to break seed dormancy, whereas Cuscuta species do not rely on SLs for germination. Instead, chemotropic responses to host-exuded com

Transcriptome analysis of the phosphate starvation response sheds light on strigolactone biosynthesis in rice.

Phosphorus (P) is a major element required for plant growth and development. To cope with P shortage, plants activate local and long-distance signaling pathways, such as an increase in the production and exudation of strigolactones (SLs). The role of the latter in mitigating P deficiency is, however, still largely unknown. To shed light on this, we studied the transcriptional response to P starvation and replenishment in wild-type rice and a SL mutant, dwarf10 (d10), and upon exogenous application of the synthetic SL GR24. P starvation resulted in major transcriptional alterations, such as the

Colonization by multi-potential Pseudomonas aeruginosa P4 stimulates peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) growth, defence physiology and root system functioning to benefit the root-rhizobacterial interface.

The beneficial associations between Arachis hypogaea L. (peanut) and fluorescent Pseudomonas species have been poorly explored despite their predominance in the peanut rhizosphere. The present study explores the mutually beneficial interactions between peanut roots and P. aeruginosa P4 (P4) in terms of their impact on plant growth, defence physiology and the root-rhizobacterial interface. The efficient phosphate solubilizer P4 exhibited biocontrol abilities, including the production of siderophores, pyocyanin, indole-3-acetic acid and hydrogen cyanide. The bacterization of peanut seeds with mu

Gum Acacia as a Novel Therapeutic Agent for Male Infertility: What Does the Evidence Say?

Male fertility has declined markedly in recent decades, with reductions in sperm count, motility, and quality posing a growing global concern. Among the multifactorial causes, oxidative stress plays a central role by disrupting redox balance, damaging sperm DNA, impairing membrane integrity, and reducing motility. Natural antioxidants, particularly plant-derived bioactives, have gained significant attention as potential modulators of male reproductive health. Gum Acacia (GA), a dried exudate obtained mainly from Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal, is a highly branched arabinogalactan-rich polysac

Pine-Extracted Volatile Oils Suppress Root Rot in Psammosilene tunicoides Through Direct Antifungal Activity and Rhizosphere Microbiome Modulation.

Frequent outbreaks of root rot in Psammosilene tunicoides W. C. Wu & C. Y. Wu severely compromise the quality of its medicinal materials and hinder its large-scale cultivation. Interestingly, wild P. tunicoides growing under pine trees rarely experience this disease. To explore the potential basis of root rot suppression, we evaluated the direct antifungal activity of pine-derived volatile oils and the associated changes in the rhizosphere microbiome. GC-MS showed that pine turpentine was dominated by α-pinene (45.50%) and longifolene (28.20%). In vitro assays confirmed its highly efficient in

Amentoflavone Ameliorates Carrageenan-Induced Pleurisy and Lung Injury by Inhibiting the NF-κB/STAT3 Pathways via Nrf2 Activation.

Many natural flavonoids can activate nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), which is pivotal for alleviating various diseases related to inflammation and oxidative stress, including pleurisy. Amentoflavone (AMF), a biflavonoid extracted from many plants, has some beneficial bioactivities, especially anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities. We aimed to investigate whether AMF protects against pleurisy and lung injury induced by carrageenan (Car) by activating Nrf2. Pleurisy was induced in wild-type (WT) and Nrf2-deficient (Nrf2-/-) mice. Then, pleural exudate and lung tissue

Study on the effect of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 coupled with the low molecular weight organic acid on the dissimilation reduction of Cd-containing goethite.

Microbial dissimilated iron reduction is one of the important driving forces of the biological and geochemical cycles of iron in nature. Plant root exudates dominated by organic acids are important electron donors of the rhizosphere dissimilar iron reduction microorganisms under flooded conditions. In this paper, we investigated the effects of different kinds and concentrations of organic acids on the dissimilation reduction process of goethite by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, and explored the effect of phase transformation of iron minerals on its adsorption of Cd. The results showed that the lo

Antiulcerogenic Potential of the Ethanolic Extract of Ceiba speciosa (A. St.-Hil.) Ravenna Evaluated by In Vitro and In Vivo Studies.

Gastrointestinal diseases, such as peptic ulcers, are caused by a damage in the gastric mucosa provoked by several factors. This stomach injury is regulated by many inflammatory mediators and is commonly treated with proton-pump inhibitors, histamine H2 receptor blockers and antacids. However, various medicinal plants have demonstrated positive effects on gastric ulcer treatment, including plants of the Ceiba genus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antiulcer and anti-inflammatory activities of the stem bark ethanolic extract of Ceiba speciosa (A. St.-Hil.) Ravenna. We performed a prel

Fabrication of a high internal phase emulsion stabilized with Pleurotus eryngii protein modified by ultra-high pressure combined with glutamine transaminase treatment as a potential fat substitute in pork patty formulations.

Plant protein-stabilized high internal phase Pickering emulsions (HIPEs) represent a promising strategy to replace animal fat in meat products, yet their performance depends critically on protein modification. Pleurotus eryngii protein (PEP) was modified by ultra-high pressure-assisted transglutaminase (TG) crosslinking. This treatment significantly enhanced PEP's emulsifying activity, induced secondary structural rearrangement, increased surface hydrophobicity, and reduced its particle size. The modified PEP successfully stabilized a high internal phase Pickering emulsion (HIPE, 75% oil phase

Effects of pine needle ice structuring protein on the functional properties of myofibrillar proteins from pork patty subjected to freezing-thawing cycles.

This study investigated the effects of pine needle ice structuring protein (PNISP, 0-0.8%, w/w) on physicochemical and functional properties of Myofibrillar proteins (MP) from pork patties under repeated freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles. Repeated F-T cycles significantly impaired MP functionality, including reduced solubility and surface charge, increased aggregation, weakened viscoelasticity, and deteriorated gel and emulsion stability. PNISP supplementation effectively alleviated these impairments, with 0.6% PNISP showing the optimal effect. PNISP-treated samples exhibited higher solubility, lower t
