Dynamics of Rare Earth Element Uptake and Partitioning in Two Soybean Cultivars Under Background Soil Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Rare earth elements (REEs) are present in agricultural ecosystems, but their baseline soil-plant transfer dynamics require systematic understanding. This study investigated the 'source-to-sink' biogeochemical distribution of REEs in soybean under background soil conditions. METHODS: We characterized REE concentrations and fractionation patterns in the composite surface soil samples and analyzed two soybean cultivars ('Jiyu 201' (JY) and 'Ping'an 16' (PA)). A seven-stage sampling scheme (20-80 days post-sowing) using whole-plant samples was employed to evaluate temporal concentrati

Ectopic expression of dehydration responsive element binding proteins (StDREB2) confers higher tolerance to salt stress in potato.

Dehydration responsive element binding proteins (DREB) are members of a larger family of transcription factors, many of which have been reported to contribute to plant responses to abiotic stresses in several species. While, little is known about their role in potato (Solanum tuberosum). This report describes the cloning and characterization of a DREB transcription factor cDNA, StDREB2, isolated from potato (cv Nicola) plants submitted to salt treatment. Based on a multiple sequence alignment, this protein was classified into the A-5 group of DREB subfamily. Expression studies revealed that St

Boosting phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA) yield in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and assessing antifungal performance of PCA-loaded mesoporous carriers.

Phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA) is a potent antifungal metabolite from Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but its application is limited by low production yields and stability issues. This study aimed to enhance PCA production and evaluate its efficacy using a nano-delivery system. We employed a two-stage statistical optimization strategy. First, a Plackett-Burman (PB) design identified pH, temperature, and glycerol concentration as critical factors. Subsequently, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on a Central Composite Design (CCD) was used to fine-tune these parameters. The optimal conditions

Comprehensive Analysis of Rice Laccase Gene (OsLAC) Family and Ectopic Expression of OsLAC10 Enhances Tolerance to Copper Stress in Arabidopsis.

Laccases are encoded by a multigene family and widely distributed in plant genomes where they play roles oxidizing monolignols to produce higher-order lignin involved in plant development and stress responses. We identified 30 laccase genes (OsLACs) from rice, which can be divided into five subfamilies, mostly expressed during early development of the endosperm, growing roots, and stems. OsLACs can be induced by hormones, salt, drought, and heavy metals stresses. The expression level of OsLAC10 increased 1200-fold after treatment with 20 μM Cu for 12 h. The laccase activities of OsLAC10 were c

Competitive uptake and phytomonitoring of chlorinated contaminant mixtures by Redosier dogwood (Cornus sericea).

Plant uptake is an important process in phytoremediation. The robust uptake of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by plants offers opportunities to establish quantitative relationships between VOCs in plant tissues and in groundwater for the purpose of phytoscreening or phytomonitoring. Most previous research pertaining to phytoremediation neglected the competitive effects of co-contaminants on the uptake of VOCs by plants, yet recent studies appeared to indicate high competitive effects of co-contamination. This study investigated the competitive uptake of three chlorinated compounds in the pr

Differential partitioning of seed-inhabiting methylotrophs in the endosphere of wheat plants.

BACKGROUND: Both endophytes, microorganisms that reside within plants, and methylotrophs, which grow using methanol produced from plant leaves, play key roles in protecting plants against biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the source of endophytes and the mechanisms of their selection in plants are poorly understood. Therefore, experiments were carried out to identify wheat seed methylotrophic endophytes and evaluate their partitioning in root, stem and leaf of aseptic-controlled plants cultivated from surface-sterilized seeds. RESULTS: The counts of endophytic methanol utilizers were high

In Vitro Assessment of Anthelmintic Activities of Rauwolfia vomitoria (Apocynaceae) Stem Bark and Roots against Parasitic Stages of Schistosoma mansoni and Cytotoxic Study.

Schistosomiasis is a Neglected Tropical Diseases which can be prevented with mass deworming chemotherapy. The reliance on a single drug, praziquantel, is a motivation for the search of novel antischistosomal compounds. This study investigated the anthelmintic activity of the stem bark and roots of Rauwolfia vomitoria against two life stages of Schistosoma mansoni. Both plant parts were found to be active against cercariae and adult worms. Within 2 h of exposure all cercariae were killed at a concentration range of 62.5-1000 µg/mL and 250-1000 µg/mL of R. vomitoria stem bark and roots, respecti

Cloning and functional characterization of a cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (SmC4H) from the lycophyte Selaginella moellendorffii.

Cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H) is a key cytochrome P450 enzyme in the phenylpropanoid pathway, providing essential precursors for lignin and flavonoid biosynthesis. While well characterized in seed plants, the functional and regulatory features of C4H in lycophytes remain less well understood. In this study, a C4H gene (SmC4H) from the lycophyte Selaginella moellendorffii was cloned and functionally characterized. Sequence and comparative analyses showed that SmC4H retains the characteristic CYP73 framework, including a non-canonical PSRF sequence, and falls within the supported land-plant C4H/
