A 7-year-old, neutered male domestic shorthair cat presented to a tertiary referral hospital for respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs revealed severe tracheal stenosis, a cranial mediastinal mass, pleural effusion, and a perihilar bronchial pulmonary pattern. Neoplasia involving the trachea and cranial mediastinum was prioritized. Additional antemortem diagnostics were not pursued. With few reported treatment options, the owners elected euthanasia, and necropsy confirmed tracheal squamous cell carcinoma. Tracheal squamous cell carcinoma is a rare feline neoplasm associated with a poor pr

Mesothelioma is a difficult-to-detect neoplasm that rarely develops in the peritoneum. In patients with unexplained ascites, pleural fluid analysis and ultrasonography is often the first step to achieving a diagnosis. This case report shares a unique presentation in which a patient who presented with unexplained ascites, was initially thought to have cirrhosis but was later found to have malignant peritoneal mesothelioma after cross-sectional imaging and tissue acquisition. This case illustrates the importance of a high clinical index of suspicion for mesothelioma given its variety of clinical

Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a rare neoplasm that arises in the context of severe immunosuppression. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as a result of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is the most common cause of immunodeficiency in patients who develop PEL. These neoplasms usually involve one or more body cavities, so-called classic PEL. The pleural cavity is most often involved, followed by the peritoneal and pericardial cavities. Involvement of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and meninges is rare. A subset of patients can present with a tissue-based mass, known as the

OBJECTIVES: Non-mucinous appendiceal neoplasms (NMAN) are rare. The role of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in treating peritoneal dissemination from NMAN is poorly defined. We hypothesise that histology impacts survival and compared the disease characteristics and short- and long-term outcomes of mucinous and non-mucinous appendiceal neoplasms treated with CRS/HIPEC.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a prospective database of 228 patients with peritoneal disease from appendiceal primaries proceeding to CRS/HIPEC from 01/01/2008 to 30/06/20

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the expression levels of thymidylate synthase (TS) and 2-[¹⁸F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (¹⁸F-FDG) uptake on positron emission tomography (PET) in various thoracic neoplasms. In total, 392 patients [non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) (n=140), malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) (n=21), pulmonary metastatic tumors (PMT) (n=148), thymic epithelial tumors (n=49) and pulmonary neuroendocrine (NE) tumor (n=34)] who underwent ¹⁸F-FDG PET before treatment were included in this study. Tumor sections were stained using immunohistochemist

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare, spindle-cell neoplasms generally associated with the serosal surface, especially the pleura. Histopathologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and flow cytometric analyses were performed on seven SFTs of extrapleural sites (two retroperitoneal, two soft tissue, one each peritoneal, nasal cavity, and orbit). Five patients were women, and two were men, aged from 21 to 68 years (average, 39 yr). All of the lesions presented as well-circumscribed masses. The lesions ranged in size from 2 to 20 cm in greatest diameter. Histologically, these lesions were

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive neoplasm arising from the surface serosal cells of the pleural cavity. Surgery remains the main therapeutic standard in the treatment of MPM with the goal of complete gross cytoreduction of the tumor. Because MPM is a diffuse disease affecting the entire mesothelial lining of the hemithorax, surgery alone can rarely achieve adequate tumor-free resection margins. The surgical choices are pleurectomy/decortication (P/D) or extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP). Radiotherapy (RT) is usually applied postoperatively with the aim to improve local cont

BACKGROUND: The progress of pleural plaques in persons exposed to environmental asbestos in Almopia, Greece were studied prospectively.
METHODS: During a 15-year period, 198 individuals, in whom pleural plaques had been observed during the period 1988-1990 were followed. Respiratory function was initially evaluated in 23. All were inhabitants of seven villages of Northern Greece, where rocks with high concentration in asbestos fibers were used for whitewashing until 1935.
RESULTS: Out of this population, 126 survived and underwent chest X-ray in 2003 while respiratory function was retested i

Thymic carcinoma is a rare epithelial neoplasm of the thymus. The presence of a specific chromosomal abnormality may augment diagnosis and therapeutic stratification. We report a 15-year-old boy diagnosed with thymic carcinoma who presented with a large anterior mediastinal mass, pleural effusion, and bone metastasis. The pleural fluid, cytology, bony lesions, and bone marrow were examined and chromosomal studies were performed. Histologic and immunohistochemical studies confirmed a poorly differentiated squamous cell type of thymic carcinoma. The karyotype of the pleural fluid at the time of

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a lymphoma of T-cell origin, characterized by the presence of large lymphoid cells with abundant cytoplasm and pleomorphic, often horseshoe-shaped nuclei (hallmark cells), as well as strong and uniform expression of cluster of differentiation (CD)30. Two distinct clinicopathologic categories of ALCL include primary cutaneous ALCL and systemic ALCL. Systemic ALCL is further classified into anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive, ALK-negative, and breast implant-associated ALCL. Most ALCLs occurring in adults are ALK negative and present in lymph nodes

BACKGROUND: Meigs' syndrome is regarded as a benign ovarian tumor accompanied by pleural effusion and ascites, both of which resolve after removal of the tumor. Patients often seek treatment in the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine or other internal medicine departments due to symptoms caused by ascites or hydrothorax. Here, we report a rare case of Meigs' syndrome caused by granulosa cell tumor accompanied with intrathoracic lesions.
CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old women was admitted to the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine due to coughing and expectoration

Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon neoplasm that should be distinguished from the more common pulmonary adenocarcinomas and other metastatic lesions. Although diagnosis is based on morphologic features, immunohistochemical stains such as Calretinin, WT-1, CK-5/6, D2-40, Ber-Ep4, and MOC-31 are routinely used. Other organ-specific immunohistochemical markers are used when metastases from unknown primary lesion is suspected clinically. Here, we report a case of pleural epithelioid malignant mesothelioma expressing CK20. A 68-year-old male presented to the Emergency Department with nonproducti

BACKGROUND: South Africa has the highest burden of tuberculosis (TB) in the World Health Organization (WHO) African region. Using traditional TB diagnostic tools, the diagnosis of pleural TB (PTB) is highly unrewarding. Elevated levels of pleural fluid adenosine deaminase (FADA) have been shown to be useful in the diagnosis of PTB; however, similar levels may be found in some other medical conditions leading to misdiagnosis. Following queries from clinicians concerning the likely high false-positive (FP) rate of FADA from our laboratory, we performed a retrospective audit of all high FADA resu

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTP) are rare mesenchymal tumors representing <5% of all tumors of the pleura. Literature reveals only two case series and a few solitary reports.
CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old male presented to our hospital after experiencing exertional dyspnea. A chest CT revealed a giant heterogeneous mass. CT-guided transthoracic core needle biopsy demonstrated SFTP. The well-circumscribed, encapsulated resected mass was measured to be 30 cm × 21 cm × 15 cm and weighed 6900 g.
DISCUSSION: SFTP are a rare pathology of the pleural cavity, which most of the

INTRODUCTION: Myoepithelial carcinoma (MECA) is an infrequently recognized salivary gland (SG) neoplasm that commonly develops within a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma (MECA ex PA). Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy reports of this neoplasm are largely restricted to small series and single case reports.
METHODS: Our cytopathology files were searched for examples of SG MECA/MECA ex PA having confirmatory histopathologic verification. Conventional FNA biopsy smears were performed, and exfoliative specimens processed using standard techniques.
RESULTS: Thirteen cases from 9 patients (M:F = 3.
