Autonomic failure in hydrencephaly.

Autonomic functions were studied in three patients with hydrencephalus and five with hydrocephalus. Autonomic failure of central origin was found in the patients with hydrencephalus; whereas, those suffering from hydrocephalus had essentially normal autonomic function. In two patients with hydrencephalus, the hypothalamus was markedly abnormal but the rest of the autonomic nervous system was histologically normal. From this it is concluded that in some patients with mental and motor retardation, autonomic failure may be of cerebral origin but that this is not a feature of patients with hydroce

[A case of intrasellar arachnoid cyst].

Intrasellar arachnoid cyst is very rare. We report a case of intrasellar arachnoid cyst and review 15 cases which were previously reported. … e stretched and displaced laterally, the A1 portions of the anterior cerebral arteries were raised. Pneumoencephalography revealed the upward displacement of the floor of the third ventricle indicating the presence of the suprasellar mass. On May 7, 1981, the sella turcica was reached via the transsphenoidal rhinoseptal approach. A cyst with a white colored thin wall w …

Congenital myopathy and communicating hydrocephalus--a possible pathogenetic combination.

A 5 1/2-year-old boy with congenital myopathy associated with communicating hydrocephalus is described. Motor milestones were delayed with generalized nonprogressive muscular weakness and moderately elevated serum CK. Muscle biopsy revealed multifocal areas of decreased oxidative enzyme activity which were characterized ultrastructurally by myofibrillar disorganization and Z-band streaming with decrease or absence of mitochondria in this area. The head circumference measured more than 98 percentile at 14 months. The CT scan disclosed moderately dilated ventricles and enlarged cortical sulci. R

Holoprosencephaly. Computerized tomographic and pneumographic findings with anatomic correlation.

This report describes the computerized tomographic, pneumoencephalographic, and anatomic findings in a case of holoprosencephaly. Computerized tomography is suggested as the most accurate diagnostic method in defining the nature and extent of those anomalies related to the failure of cleavage of the prosencephalon. The value of this method in detecting less severely affected family members is evident.

Dementia paralytica: deterioration from communicating hydrocephalus.

Five patients suffering from dementia paralytica who failed to improve or deteriorated after one or several high dosage courses of penicillin, had pneumoencephalographic patterns suggesting communicating hydrocephalus. Measurements of the ventricular index, ratio of cella media to width of the temporal horn, and the callosal angle differed from that in seven cases of dementia paralytica with associated cerebral atrophy. An isotope cisternogram in three cases with communicating hydrocephalus further confirmed a blockage of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) at the parasagittal subarachnoid space. Th

Hydrocephalus associated with Guillain-Barre syndrome.

A 68-year-old man developed progressive four-limb weakness and areflexia 17 days after an influenza vaccination. He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), and remained ventilator dependent and bed-bound for 3 months, despite plasmapheresis and immunoglobulin infusion. However, cognitive impairment, excessive daytime sleepiness, and motor disability were still present, even when he was no longer ventilator dependent. Brain computerized tomography scan and isotope cisternography was consistent with normal pressure hydrocephalus. His motor control and cognitive function recovered almos

RISA cisternography in the option of ventriculocisternal shunt for infantile non-tumoural aqueductal stenosis.

Twenty cases of infantile triventricular hydrocephalus from non-tumoural aqueductal stenosis were treated by ventriculocisternal shunt following RISA cisternography. In 11 cases RISA cisternography showed a normal pattern of CSF circulation. One patient was lost to follow-up. Two had their intrathecal shunt converted into an extrathecal one because of postoperative meningeal infection. Of the remaining 8 patients, 7 had good and 1 fair long term results. In 9 cases RISA cisternography presented an abnormal pattern without indicating a definite impairment of CSF absorption. Slow flow of the tra
