Elevated developmental temperatures impact the size and allometry of morphological traits of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris.

The impact of global warming on wild bee decline threatens the pollination services they provide. Exposure to temperatures above optimal during development is known to reduce adult body size but how it affects the development and scaling of body parts remains unclear. In bees, a reduction in body size and/or a reduction in body parts, such as the antennae, tongue and wings, and how they scale with body size (i.e. their allometry) could severely affect their fitness. To date, it remains unclear how temperature affects body size and the scaling of morphological traits in bees. To address this kn…

Aphidophagous hoverflies reduce foxglove aphid infestations and improve seed set and fruit yield in sweet pepper.

BACKGROUND: Larvae of many hoverfly species prey upon aphids, whereas the adults, by relying on nectar and pollen, contribute to the pollination of many plant species. Despite their great potential for pest control and pollination, important gaps still exist regarding the efficacy of hoverflies in regulating infestations of major aphid pests in augmentative biological control programs. Here, we tested the potential of the commercially available hoverflies Eupeodes corollae and Sphaerophoria rueppellii to regulate populations of the foxglove aphid Aulacorthum solani in sweet pepper. RESULTS: I…

Central cell-produced salvagers promote fertilization recovery and interspecific hybridization.

Angiosperms face frequent fertilization failure in natural environments. To address this challenge, angiosperms have evolved fertilization recovery mechanisms to ensure successful reproduction. The central cell secretes pollen tube attractants to mediate fertilization recovery, but the molecular mechanisms remain poorly defined. In this study, we identified two central cell-produced peptides SALVAGER3 (SAL3) and SAL4 that attract pollen tubes when synergid cell-controlled attraction is compromised. Loss of SALs reduces the ovular capacity for fertilization recovery. These central cell-derived

Divergent evolutionary trajectories of male and female investment in the Brassicaceae.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plants have colonized diverse habitats, with their ecological success depending on key adaptive traits. Among these, reproductive characteristics such as pollen and ovule production are critical. The allocation to sexual reproduction is likely shaped by diverse selective pressures and constraints. This study investigates the evolution of pollen and ovule production and its drivers in the Brassicaceae family. METHODS: We analysed 158 Brassicaceae species, recorded pollen and ovule numbers, and used phylogenetic analyses to characterize the evolution of these traits. We the

Effect of GF-120 (Spinosad) Aerial Sprays on Colonies of the Stingless Bee Scaptotrigona mexicana (Hymenoptera: Apidae) and the Honey Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Despite their relevant contribution to the conservation of tropical ecosystems and crop productivity through pollination, the stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponini) can be considered a group of neglected species in the assessment of pesticides upon nontarget organisms. In this article, we evaluated the effect of aerial sprays of the spinosad-based fruit fly toxic bait GF-120 upon colonies of the stingless bee Scaptotrigona mexicana Guérin (Hymenoptera: Apidae), an economically important and abundant species in some landscapes of Mexico, located in mango orchards. Colonies of the honey bee Apis me…

Competitive ability of Capsella species with different mating systems and ploidy levels.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Capsella is a model genus for studying the transition from outcrossing to selfing, with or without change in ploidy levels. The genomic consequences and changes in reproductive traits (selfing syndrome) associated with these shifts have been studied in depth. However, potential ecological divergence among species of the genus has not been determined. Among ecological traits, competitive ability could be relevant for selfing evolution, as selfing has been shown to be statistically associated with reduced competitiveness in a recent meta-analysis. METHODS: We assessed the e

The scope of Baker's law.

Baker's law refers to the tendency for species that establish on islands by long-distance dispersal to show an increased capacity for self-fertilization because of the advantage of self-compatibility when colonizing new habitat. Despite its intuitive appeal and broad empirical support, it has received substantial criticism over the years since it was proclaimed in the 1950s, not least because it seemed to be contradicted by the high frequency of dioecy on islands. Recent theoretical work has again questioned the generality and scope of Baker's law. Here, we attempt to discern where the idea is

Genomics Reveal Population Crash and Range Contraction in Elusive Fijian Hylaeus Bees.

The conservation of pollinators is of particular interest due to their keystone role in ecosystem function, but is hindered by systematic geographic and methodological biases such that baseline data are not often readily available. Islands are useful as simplified systems to understand evolutionary processes, are known to host higher bee species richness per unit area than mainland regions, and have disproportionate representation of threatened species. We used low-lying and canopy sampling paired with mitochondrial and genomic data to assess a recently discovered clade of canopy-specialist Fi

Progeny Differentiation in Faba Bean Using Hyperspectral Images and Machine Learning.

Though currently a minor crop, faba bean is a promising source of plant-based protein as global diets shift towards more plant-based nutrition. To realize this potential, advances in breeding and cultivation are crucial. To exploit heterosis, faba bean breeding frequently utilizes synthetic cultivars, produced by open pollination of inbred lines, resulting in a mixture of F1 hybrid seeds and self-pollinated offspring. Pure F1 hybrid cultivars are currently unavailable due to unstable cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) systems. An ability to distinguish F1 seeds from their parental inbreds based …

The nature of gain curves.

Gain curves have been a staple of sex allocation theory for decades. They represent patterns in which fitness is obtained from resource investments in reproductive functions. The monotonic forms that have been used for gain curves can represent fitness accrual by individuals, but only on the assumption that sufficient mates are always available to allow the stipulated monotonic pattern of reproductive success to occur. However, sexual populations do not have external banks of mating opportunities that lie outside the dynamics of the population (such opportunities would, by definition, be part

Sublethal Concentration of Chloramphenicol Threatens the Health of Bombus terrestris by Regulating Gene Expression, Altering Enzyme Activity and Disrupting Gut Microbiota.

Bumblebees are dominant pollinators threatened by environmental antibiotic residues. This study investigated sublethal chloramphenicol (12 and 120 μg/L) effects on Bombus terrestris after 15 days' exposure. The results showed that chloramphenicol exposure had no significant effect on the survival rate and cumulative food intake of bumblebees, confirming the sublethal property of the tested concentrations. However, chloramphenicol significantly dysregulated the expression of genes related to learning-memory (DopR2, Oamb, NMDA), immunity (abaecin, defensin) and detoxification (cyp9Q6) in bumbleb

Plant protection product residues in plant pollen and nectar: A review of current knowledge.

Exposure to Plant Protection Products, PPPs, (fungicides, herbicides and insecticides) is a significant stressor for bees and other pollinators, and has recently been the focus of intensive debate and research. Specifically, exposure through contaminated pollen and nectar is considered pivotal, as it presents the highest risk of PPP exposure across all bee species. However, the actual risk that multiple PPP residues might pose to non-target species is difficult to assess due to the lack of clear evidence of their actual concentrations. To consolidate the existing knowledge of field-realistic r

Genomic and Morphological Insights Into the Adaptive Evolution of Honeybees in Rocky Desertification Habitats.

Unlike traditional desertification, rocky desertification is a distinct form of land degradation characterized by low vegetation coverage and a high proportion of rock exposure. Honeybees are crucial pollinators and ecological restorers and have coevolved closely with plants as their primary habitat and food resource to naturally inhabit rocky desertification habitats. In this study, classical morphological analyses showed that under mild desertification conditions, honeybee body size increases, while in severely degraded habitats, their morphology resembles that of normal individuals. Evidence for and against deformed wing virus spillover from honey bees to bumble bees: a reverse genetic analysis.

Deformed wing virus (DWV) is a persistent pathogen of European honey bees and the major contributor to overwintering colony losses. The prevalence of DWV in honey bees has led to significant concerns about spillover of the virus to other pollinating species. Bumble bees are both a major group of wild and commercially-reared pollinators. Several studies have reported pathogen spillover of DWV from honey bees to bumble bees, but evidence of a sustained viral infection characterized by virus replication and accumulation has yet to be demonstrated. Here we investigate the infectivity and transmiss
