The following is the case report of M. G. a 68-year-old male carrier of polcythemia vera, a pathology in which the risk of thrombosis is increased. The patient presented clinically suspected deep venous thrombosis and a phleboscintigraphy confirmed the diagnosis. A real-time B-mode ultrasonography performed later instead demonstrated a popliteal cyst. The case report focuses on diagnostic methods in deep venous thrombosis and particular attention is paid to the role of phleboscintigraphy, of impedance plethysmography and of real time B-mode ultrasonography.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis ( JIA) is a persistent autoimmune-inflammatory disease that affects children younger than 16. Aggressive synovitis of the hip may cause joint destruction, hip protrusion, erosion, pseudosubluxation, dysplasia, and osteoarthritis. Subluxation of the hip had been reported previously. However, dislocation of the hip in JIA is an extremely rare situation, and only two cases have been reported up to date. Reduction of the dislocated hip has to be performed in any way. However, there is no algorithm to be followed for the treatment of hip dislocations caus

There is a lack of research comparing the clinical effects of arthroscopic treatment of popliteal cysts between the one posteromedial portal (OPP) technique and the two posteromedial portals (TPP) technique. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy of arthroscopic treatment for popliteal cysts between the 2 techniques.Patients with symptomatic popliteal cysts after surgery were retrospectively invited to participate in this study. They received arthroscopy treatment via the OPP technique or the TPP technique. At the final follow-up, the Rauschning and Lindgren cr…

Although popliteal cysts are most frequently identified in patients with osteoarthritis (OA), they may occur in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in which serious complicated cases such as cyst rupture can be developed. The objective of this study was to report four patients with RA (six knees) in combination with OA with a brief review of literature of previous similar published cases. This is a retrospective review of case records of patients with refractory and/or complicated popliteal cysts, who have successfully treated with arthroscopic intervention. We suggest that arthroscopic i…

The clinical symptoms and signs of 16 patients presenting with swelling and tenderness of the calf indicative of deep venous thrombosis are reported. Phlebography disclosed no venous obstruction in any case. Arthrography revealed dissecting or ruptured popliteal cysts in all patients. The differential diagnosis and the underlying disorders of the knee joint are discussed.

Peripheral neuropathy of the external popliteal ischiadic nerve caused by intraneural cysts is a very rare and peculiar pathological phenomenon compared with diseases associated with extraneural cysts or colliquative phenomena of solid nervous lesions. Two cases of peripheral neuropathy of the external popliteal ischiadic nerve caused by intraneural cysts and evaluated with ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance are described. The diagnostic efficacy of these imaging modalities is also evaluated with particular reference to MR capability to define the morphology of such lesions

PURPOSE: Arthroscopy in popliteal cyst surgery enables addressing all components of its pathomechanism: the cyst wall, valvular mechanism, and concomitant intra-articular pathologies. Techniques differ as to the management of the cyst wall and the valvular mechanism. This study aimed to assess the recurrence rate and functional outcomes of a cyst wall and valve excising arthroscopic technique with concurrent intra-articular pathology management. The secondary purpose was to assess cyst and valve morphology and concomitant intra-articular findings.
METHODS: Between 2006 and 2012, 118 patients …

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), a rare hyperproliferation of the synovial lining, commonly mimics other conditions. As a result, the diagnosis may remain elusive, as the classic signs of tenderness and effusion are not specific. Occasionally, PVNS presents as a popliteal cyst, which may divert attention from intra-articular pathology. In this article, we describe a case of PVNS that presented with a popliteal cyst as the chief problem report. In other cases PVNS presented as a popliteal cyst, and evidence was reported of PVNS within the cyst stalk and presumable intra-articular involv…

Cystic disease of the popliteal artery is a rare disorder in which most cases involve the formation of an adventitial cyst that disturbs the popliteal artery blood flow. We present herein the case of a patient presenting with popliteal artery occlusion due to compression by a cyst which formed at the media of the popliteal artery. The onset occurred during a baseball game in which he played catcher. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a communication of the cyst with the adjacent knee joint. This unusual case could provide important clues to help identify the pathogenesis of t

Ultrasound (US), because of its ability to distinguish cystic from solid tissue, is an ideal tool for diagnosing masses in the popliteal fossa. Five cases are presented. Two cases show the typical ultrasound images in the most common popliteal mass, a cyst. A third case significantly points out the necessity of further investigations if the US findings are atypical of a simple cyst and the patient is symptomatic. A fourth case demonstrates that the US image can distinguish an aneurysm of the popliteal artery from a cyst. A fifth case demonstrates that a solid tumor in the popliteal fossa, in c

CONTEXT: Popliteal synovial cysts, also known as Baker's cysts, are commonly found in association with intra-articular knee disorders, such … inely discovered on magnetic resonance imaging scans of the symptomatic knee. Symptoms related to a popliteal cyst origin are infrequent and may be related to size.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A PubMed search was conducted with keywords related to the history, diagnosis, and treatment of Baker's cysts-namely, Baker's cyst, popliteal cyst, diagnosis, treatment, format …

INTRODUCTION: Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is characterised by the accumulation of gelatinous fluid within the adventitial layer of a blood vessel. Over 90% of CAD occurs in the arterial system. Venous CAD most commonly involves the iliofemoral rather than the popliteal segments.
REPORT: This is the report of a 49 year old female patient with a previous right leg deep vein thrombosis (DVT). She presented to a vascular outpatient appointment with recurrent right lower extremity swelling. Venous duplex ultrasound showed an ectatic and incompetent right popliteal vein. Computed tomography (C

Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery is a rare non-atheromatous peripheral artery disease. In most cases, the cystic lesion is located in the adventitia of the popliteal artery. Herein, we present a rare case of cystic arterial disease in which the cyst was located only in the media of the popliteal artery. We successfully treated the cyst with resection of the affected popliteal artery and reconstruction with an autogenous vein graft.

In a 27-year-old man with claudication, computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a popliteal cyst and an adventitial cyst of the popliteal artery. Adventitial cystic disease was unexpected because the patient had a diminished pedal pulse on plantar flexion of the foot, a physical finding suggesting popliteal artery entrapment syndrome. CT was useful in the initial examination of this young patient with suspected popliteal vascular disease because of its accuracy and noninvasiveness.

43 non-surgical patients presenting with calf pain and a clinical diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) were studied by arthrography, venography, and ultrasound. Only 14 had venographic evidence of DVT; 5 of these had popliteal cysts, which in 4 cases probably contributed to symptoms. 11 patients had popliteal cysts and normal venograms, and 9 of these cysts were thought likely to be the cause of the symptoms. In 18 patients all investigations were normal. Physical signs were not helpful in distinguishing between the three groups of patients. Ultrasonography detected only 2 of the 16 popli…

We encountered a 73-year-old man with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) and Baker's cyst. Venography revealed that the right popliteal vein was compressed by Baker's cyst and deep venous thrombosis (DVT) had developed. DVT associated with Baker's cyst is rather common and these two conditions are thought to be causally related. Baker's cyst is the most frequent mass lesion in the popliteal region. We suggest that Baker's cyst is a risk factor for PE as well as surgery and trauma.
