[Health status of the population in the vicinity of a waste recycling plant in Mexico].

This study was conducted in Mexico among residents of an area near a recycling plant for zinc and other metallic dusts to find out if these substances produce various adverse health effects in the population that may come in contact with them. The plant is in a municipality close to Monterrey, which is Mexico's third most populous and second most industrialized city. A cross-sectional comparative design was used for the research, which took place from September to November 1994. By means of quota sampling, houses were selected in two areas--one exposed, by virtue of its proximity to the plant,

Respiratory health effects of the indoor environment in a population of Dutch children.

The effect of indoor exposure to nitrogen dioxide on respiratory health was studied over a period of 2 yr in a population of nonsmoking Dutch children 6 to 12 yr of age. Lung function was measured at the schools, and information on respiratory symptoms was collected from a self-administered questionnaire completed by the parents of the children. Nitrogen dioxide was measured in the homes of all children with Palmes' diffusion tubes. In addition, information on smoking and dampness in the home was collected by questionnaire. There was no relationship between exposure to nitrogen dioxide in the

[Maternal age and psychological health of the child. Study of a population in consultation].

The data of all first born or only children seen at the department of child and adolescent psychiatry at a university hospital from 1978-84 were analyzed according to maternal age at birth of the patient. Mixed emotional and conduct disorder as well as hyperkinetic syndromes are overrepresented in the youngest maternal age group (less than or equal to 17 at delivery). The difference to other groups remains significant for the former diagnosis even after matching for age, sex, socioeconomic status and whether or not the natural parents lived together at the time of presentation. Children of tee

Social capital, trust in the health-care system and self-rated health: the role of access to health care in a population-based study.

This paper investigates the relationship between institutional trust in the health-care system, i.e. an institutional aspect of social capital, and self-rated health, and whether the strength of this association is affected by access to health-care services. The 2004 public health survey in the Scania region of Sweden is a cross-sectional study; a total of 27,963 respondents aged 18-80 years answered a postal questionnaire, which represents 59% of the random sample. Logistic regression model was used to investigate the association between institutional trust and self-rated health. Multivariate

Primary care-mental health integration programs in the veterans affairs health system serve a different patient population than specialty mental health clinics.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether Primary Care-Mental Health Integration (PC-MHI) programs within the Veterans Affairs (VA) health system provide services to patient subgroups that may be underrepresented in specialty mental health care, including older patients and women, and to explore whether PC-MHI served individuals with less severe mental health disorders compared to specialty mental health clinics. METHOD: Data were obtained from the VA National Patient Care Database for a random sample of VA patients, and primary care patients with an ICD-9-CM mental health diagnosis (N = 243,806) in 2009

Synthetic Sweeteners and Human Health: An Overview of Health Risks, Vulnerable Populations, and Effects on Key Biological Systems.

Background and Objectives: Nowadays synthetic sweeteners are widely used as sugar substitutes in beverages, processed foods, and pharmaceutical products, largely due to their low caloric content and perceived benefits for weight management and glycemic control. Their consumption has increased markedly over recent decades, paralleling global efforts to reduce added sugar intake and combat obesity and diabetes. This review examines the regulation of artificial sweeteners, their impact on vulnerable populations, and the increased concern about their health effects, including metabolic effects, ef

Life's Essential 8 and Suicide Risk: A Population-Level Study of Cardiovascular Health as a Mental Health Indicator.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular health (CVH), assessed through Life's Essential 8 (LE8), has been widely studied in relation to physical health outcomes. However, its association with mental health, including psychological distress, suicidal behavior, and mental health service utilization, remains underexplored. This study examined whether better CVH is associated with reduced risk of mental health problems and greater engagement with mental health services. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from 4,106 Korean adults aged ≥19 years from the 2021 Korea National Health and Nu

Community-Driven Health Education: Role of Health Literacy Seminars in Empowering Underserved Populations and Medical Students.

Health literacy has increasingly been recognized as a crucial determinant of health outcomes, specifically among underserved populations facing immense barriers to accessing and understanding their healthcare plans. This research paper advocates for community-based health literacy seminars to address this disparity. These seminars can help underserved populations connect with individuals involved in healthcare within their communities while also providing experiential learning opportunities for medical students, fostering the growth of communication skills and cultural competence. The study ai

Second-generation immigrant children: health prevention for a new population in terms of vaccination coverage and health assessment.

BACKGROUND: In recent years the total number of foreigners taking up residence in Italy is increasing: the number of children born in Italy to foreign parents currently account for 15% of all babies born in the country. This population is generally referred to as "second-generation immigrants". We evaluated the health conditions of this particular population by investigating the vaccination coverage and auxological data in a group of foreign children living in a foster care setting and by comparing them to those regarding a group of foreign children living with their own parents. METHODS: Thi

Social inequalities in self-rated health in Sweden using the Population Health Performance Index: a cross-sectional study.

Sweden faces challenges in improving average health and reducing health inequalities simultaneously. Traditional research methods often measure these aspects separately, posing a dilemma for policymakers. Thus, the Population Health Performance Index (PHPI) has been proposed as a summary measure that integrates both aspects. This study aimed to determine the PHPI for self-rated health (SRH) by income and education in Sweden across its 21 regions. Data were obtained from the 2021 Health on Equal Terms survey, a population-based cross-sectional study from Sweden. This survey included 17 538 part…

Bridging the United States population diversity gaps in clinical research: roadmap to precision health and reducing health disparities.

Precision medicine promises improved health outcomes by tailoring treatments to individual genetic and environmental factors. However, achieving this potential is hindered by persistent health disparities and the underrepresentation of racially and ethnically diverse populations in clinical trials. Limited diversity in research exacerbates health inequities, reducing the generalizability of findings and widening gaps in access to effective treatments. This review outlines a multi-faceted strategy to bridge diversity gaps in clinical trials, focusing on community engagement, clinical pharmacolo

Does health literacy mediate the relationship between socioeconomic status and health related outcomes in the Belgian adult population?

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) has been put forward as a potential mediator through which socioeconomic status (SES) affects health. This study explores whether HL mediates the relation between SES and a selection of health or health-related outcomes. METHODS: Data from the participants of the Belgian health interview survey 2018 aged 18 years or older were individually linked with data from the Belgian compulsory health insurance (n = 8080). HL was assessed with the HLS-EU-Q6. Mediation analyses were performed with health behaviour (physical activity, diet, alcohol and tobacco consumption)

Patterns of Mental Health Service Utilisation: A Population-Based Linkage of Over 17 Years of Health Administrative Records.

A cross-sectoral partnership was formed in 2021 in support of the recommendations in an audit on access to state-funded mental health services. In this first paper, we aimed to describe the demographic and service utilisation of adults with a mental health diagnosis in the Western Australian state-funded health system from 2005 to 2021. Inpatient, emergency department, specialised (ambulatory) community mental health service, and death records were linked in individuals aged ≥ 18 years with a mental health diagnosis in Western Australia. Altogether, 392,238 individuals with at least one mental

Changes in millennial adolescent mental health and health-related behaviours over 10 years: a population cohort comparison study.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that mental health problems are increasing and substance use behaviours are decreasing. This paper aimed to investigate recent trends in mental ill health and health-related behaviours in two cohorts of UK adolescents in 2005 and 2015. METHODS: Prevalences in mental health (depressive symptoms, self-harm, anti-social behaviours, parent-reported difficulties) and health-related behaviours (substance use, weight, weight perception, sleep, sexual intercourse) were examined at age 14 in two UK birth cohorts; Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, N

Oral health and chronic kidney disease in Brazil: a population-based analysis of the 2019 National Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests a bidirectional relationship between oral health and chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet population-based data from upper-middle-income countries remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between oral health indicators and CKD in a nationally representative sample of Brazilian adults. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, nationally representative analysis using data from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey (PNS), which employed a three-stage stratified cluster sampling design. The outcome was CKD, and the main exposures were se

Providing financial protection in health for low-income populations: a comparison of health financing designs in East Asia.

BACKGROUND: Fighting illness and poverty are intertwined objectives in global development. In recent decades, health financing reforms across many nations have enhanced financial protection for low-income populations and promoted health equity for all citizens. However, prior cross-national comparative studies predominantly focused on examining financing structures or social health insurance (SHI) schemes, neglecting financing schemes targeting the poor, such as medical financial assistance (MFA). This study comparatively explores the design of health financing schemes and financial protection

Small numbers, big impact: making a utilitarian case for the contribution of inclusion health to population health in England.

Inclusion health groups make up a small proportion of the general population, so despite the extreme social exclusion and poor health outcom … from 'inclusion health vs the rest of the population' to 'the impact of social exclusion on broader population health' makes a better case for increased policy attention and investment in inclusion health. We discuss the strengths and limitations of this approach and how it can be applied to public health policy, resource prioritisation and future research.
