BACKGROUND: Congenital cataract surgery can be performed using a pars plana/plicata approach if placement of an intraocular lens at the time of cataract removal is not a consideration. To prevent development of secondary cataract, we performed lens aspiration, anterior and posterior capsulotomy, and anterior vitrectomy via pars plana or pars plicata approach. Lentectomy in babies should be performed using a minimally invasive technique to prevent complications. Immediately after surgery, insertion of a contact lens should be possible.
METHOD: The series consisted of 11 eyes of 8 consecutive c…

OBJECTIVES: Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a common mental disorder, notorious for its chronicity and intractability. Stereotactic lesions within the anterior limb of the internal capsule have been shown to provide symptomatic relief in such refractory cases, but only few systematic evaluations have correlated anatomic lesion location with individual postoperative outcome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1976 and 1989, extremely disabled and otherwise intractable patients with a chronic deteriorating clinical course of obsessive-compulsive disorder underwent bilateral thermocapsulotomy (n = 2

The purpose of this cadaveric study was to clearly define the blood supply to the femoral head to help further reduce the incidence of iatrogenic avascular necrosis (AVN). Thirty-five hips of twenty-eight fresh cadavers were injected with colored silicone. Anterior and posterior dissection was performed to assess the vessels contributing to femoral head vascularity. The medial femoral circumflex artery (MFCA) was found to be the main blood supply to the hip in twenty-nine specimens; the inferior gluteal artery (IGA) was found to be the main blood supply in six. The MFCA consistently provided a

BACKGROUND: The synergistic effect of the acromioclavicular (AC) capsule and coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments on AC joint stability has gained recent recognition for its importance. Biomechanical and clinical studies have shown the benefit of combined reconstruction with multiple variations of surgical techniques for AC capsule augmentation. The ideal configuration remains unknown for such capsular repair aimed at achieving optimal stability with anatomic reconstruction.
HYPOTHESIS: Primary AC joint stability can be restored by AC capsule augmentation, while position of the additional suture c

A 60-year-old man with senile cataract had phacoemulsification and implantation of a single-piece acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) in July 2000. There were no intraoperative or short-term postoperative complications, and the visual acuity was 20/20 on the day after surgery. In February 2002, 19 months postoperatively, posterior capsule opacification (PCO) extending from the base of the IOL loops was observed. Capsulotomy was not performed, and the PCO regressed spontaneously between April 2003 and March 2005. This is the first documented case of spontaneous PCO regression after phacoemulsificati

We report a case of traumatic subluxation of a circular poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lens (IOL) 5 years after surgery. Slitlamp examination revealed the lack of epithelial cells or fibrosis in the intact capsule bag. Trauma was minor, and no other complication was found in the eye and orbit. The subluxated IOL was easily relocated in the bag with a hook, revealing the poor capsule sealing. Among the factors ensuring the fixation of IOLs placed in the bag after continuous curvilinear capsulotomy are sealing of the anterior and posterior capsules and proliferation of epithelial cells fr

From a clinico-anatomical point of view the implantation of IOLs with reversed optics approximates natural conditions and has many advantages. The distance between the endothelium or the pigment epithelium of the iris and the front surface of the lens is greater. The refracting surface of the lens is nearer to the nodal point and aniseikonia is reduced. However, it is still not known whether YAG laser treatment to open the posterior capsule is possible under these conditions. The present authors used the pulsed OPL3 neodymium-YAG laser ( Meditec ) to treat 45 eyes for secondary opacification o

INTRODUCTION: Cataract extraction is the most frequently performed ophthalmological procedure worldwide. Posterior capsule opacification remains the most common consequence after cataract surgery and can lead to deterioration of the visual performance with cloudy, blurred vision and halo, glare effects. Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy is the gold standard treatment and a very effective, safe and fast procedure in removing the cloudy posterior capsule. Damaging the intraocular lens (IOL) during the treatment may occur due to wrong focus of the laser beam. Thes
