Effects of pHi and pHe on membrane currents recorded with the perforated-patch method from cultured chemoreceptors of the rat carotid body.

In this study we investigated the effects of intracellular pH (pHi) and extracellular pH (pHe) on whole-cell currents in cultured glomus cells of the rat carotid body and small, intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells of sympathetic ganglia. The use of the perforated-patch recording technique along with established methods of cytoplasmic acidification allowed us to carry out this study without greatly disturbing the cell's endogenous pH regulatory mechanisms. A reversible decrease in the outward K+ current (20-30%) was observed during acid loading of glomus (and SIF cells) using the K+/H+ ionophore

Norepinephrine stimulates potassium efflux from pinealocytes: evidence for involvement of biochemical "AND" gate operated by calcium and adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate.

Biochemical studies of K+ efflux from rat pinealocytes revealed for the first time that norepinephrine (NE) increases 86Rb+ and 42K+ efflux. The effects of NE depend upon concurrent activation of both alpha 1- and beta-adrenoceptors. This effect is mediated by cAMP and Ca2+, which appear to act in conjunction to control K+ efflux; studies with charybdotoxin and tetraethylammonium indicate that a Ca2(+)-sensitive K+ channel (K(Ca] appears to be involved. Patch clamp studies identified a large conductance (approximately 100 psec) K+ channel. This study also revealed for the first time that NE tr

Supramolecular Gels Based on C3-Symmetric Amides: Application in Anion-Sensing and Removal of Dyes from Water.

We modified C3-symmetric benzene-1,3,5-tris-amide (BTA) by introducing flexible linkers in order to generate an N-centered BTA (N-BTA) molecule. The N-BTA compound formed gels in alcohols and aqueous mixtures of high-polar solvents. Rheological studies showed that the DMSO/water (1:1, v/v) gels were mechanically stronger compared to other gels, and a similar trend was observed for thermal stability. Powder X-ray analysis of the xerogel obtained from various aqueous gels revealed that the packing modes of the gelators in these systems were similar. The stimuli-responsive properties of the N-BTA

Functional Characterization and Localization of Plant-Growth Promoting Bacteria Grown Under Stressful Conditions.

Various bacterial species are associated with plant roots. However, symbiotic and free-living plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can only help plants to grow and develop under normal and stressful conditions. Several biochemical and in vitro assays were previously designed to differentiate between the PGPB and other plant-associated bacterial strains. This chapter describes and summarizes some of these assays and proposes a strategy to screen for PGPB. To determine the involvement of the PGPB in abiotic stress tolerance, assays for the ability to produce 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic ac

Dietary therapy with low protein genmai (brown rice) to improve the gut-kidney axis and reduce CKD progression.

Low protein rice can be part of a nutritionally adequate dietary pattern in the prevention of chronic kidney disease. We developed a low protein fermented genmai (brown rice) LPFG) to improve chronic kidney disease (CKD) management. The principal functional features of brown rice are retained in LPFG, lessening the negative spiral of gut-kidney associative spiral attributable to uremic dysbiosis and a leaky gut. LPFG is characterized by (1) an energy value the same as white rice, (2) a protein content less than 0.2 g/ 100 g, (3) a potassium content almost zero, (4) phosphorus less than a quart

Plant Beneficial Features and Application of Paraburkholderia sp. NhPBG1 Isolated from Pitcher of Nepenthes hamblack.

Pitchers are the unique structures of carnivorous plants used for the trapping of insects and other small invertebrates. The digestion of captured prey here is assisted by the bacteria, which have been associated with pitchers. These bacterial communities can therefore expect to have a variety of plant beneficial functions. In this study, the bacterial isolate NhPBG1 from the pitcher of Nepenthes hamblack was screened for activity against Pythium aphanidermatum, Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, and Colletotrichum accutatum and was found to have the inhibitory activity towards all the te

Biofuel and co-products from algae solvent extraction.

This study reports a novel method of using algae biomass as a source of lipid and various other co-products. Solvent-based extraction techniques could yield a number of products simultaneously. Further, the study focuses on all possible characterization and utilization of the three layers obtained from chloroform-methanol extraction of lipids. The lipid from the chloroform layer was transesterified for Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) production. The fatty acid methyl esters derived by oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and phytol were majorly analysed by GC-MS. The methanol layer was ana

Simple spectrophotometric and titrimetric methods for the determination of sulfur dioxide.

The proposed work describes a simple spectrophotmetric as well as a titrimetric method to determine sulfur dioxide. The spectrophotometric method is based on a redox reaction between sulfur dioxide and iodine monochloride obtained from iodine with chloramine-T in acetic acid. The reagent iodine monochloride oxidizes sulfur dioxide to sulfate, thereby reducing itself to iodine. Thus liberated iodine will also oxidize sulfur dioxide and reduce itself to iodide. The obtained iodide is expected to combine with iodine to form a brown-colored homoatomictriiodide anion (460 nm), which forms an ion-pa

Antidiuresis produced by injection of renin into the third cerebral ventricle of the dog.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether centrally administered renin stimulated vasopressin secretion. Vasopressin was not measured directly, but, instead, changes in urinary water excretion in anesthesized dogs undergoing a water excretion in anesthetized dogs undergoing a water diuresis were used as an index of changes in vasopressin secretion. Intraventricular injection of hog renin in a dose of 0.1 Goldblatt unit produced a marked decrease in urine flow which was associated with a decrease in free water clearance and an increase in urinary osmolatiy with no change in osmolar cle

Mining Microbial Niches: Sources of Bacteria for Enhancing Plant Growth and Resilience to pH, Salinity, Drought and Phytophthora infestans.

Enhancing plant resilience is crucial for sustainable agriculture and ecosystem health in an era of climate change and the global spread of plant pathogens. The strategic exploitation of diverse ecological niches to isolate microorganisms that promote plant growth, suppress pathogens and tolerate abiotic stress conditions is paramount. Here, 21 bacterial strains were isolated from three distinct sources: digestate produced from straw feedstock, Quercus ilex roots mycorrhised with Tuber aestivum, and a peperino stone fountain. These isolates were assigned to eight genera, Bacillus, Pseudomonas,

Lead and mercury 28 day exposure at small concentrations reduces smooth muscle relaxation by decreasing cGMP.

Cardiovascular diseases are among the main causes of mortality in the world. There is evidence of cardiovascular harm after exposure to low lead or mercury concentrations, but the effects of chronic exposure to the association of low doses of these toxic metals are still unknown. This work evaluated after 4 weeks, the association effects of low concentrations of lead and mercury on blood pressure and vascular resistance reactivity. Wistar rats were exposed for 28 days to lead acetate (1st dose of 4 μg/100 g and subsequent doses of 0.05 μg /100 g/day to cover daily losses) and mercury chloride
