Effects of the prebiotic mannan-oligosaccharide on the stress response of feed deprived zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Feed deprivation has deleterious effects on fish behavior and stress physiology which may susceptible them to disease outbreak. Functional ingredients in diets may substantially impact the physiology and stress responses of host organisms. Here, we hypothesized that the administration of a dietary prebiotic might attenuate the negative influences of feed deprivation on the behavioral profile of anxiety and physiological responses to stress in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Fish were fed with either basal or mannan-oligosaccharide supplemented (0.4% MOS/kg diet) diets, once per day (normal-control: C

Effects of prebiotic supplementation on the expression of proteins regulating iron absorption in anaemic growing rats.

Prebiotics may increase intestinal Fe absorption in anaemic growing rats. The present study evaluated the effects of high-performance (HP) inulin and oligofructose on factors that regulate Fe absorption in anaemic rats during the growth phase. Male Wistar rats aged 21 d of age were fed AIN-93G ration without Fe for 2 weeks to induce Fe-deficiency anaemia. The rats were fed on day 35 a control diet, or a diet with 10 % HP inulin, or a diet with 10 % oligofructose, without Fe supplementation. The animals were euthanised after 2 weeks, and segments of the duodenum, caecum, colon and liver were re

Prebiotic effect of fructooligosaccharide in the simulator of the human intestinal microbial ecosystem (SHIME® model).

Maintaining "gut health" is a goal for scientists throughout the world. Therefore, microbiota management models for testing probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics have been developed. The SHIME(®) model was used to study the effect of fructooligosaccharide (FOS) on the fermentation pattern of the colon microbiota. Initially, an inoculum prepared from human feces was introduced into the reactor vessels and stabilized over 2 weeks using a culture medium. This stabilization period was followed by a 2-week control period during which the microbiota was monitored. The microbiota was then subjected

Formamide-based synthesis of nucleobases by metal(II) octacyanomolybdate(IV): implication in prebiotic chemistry.

We propose that double metal cyanides that formed in primeval seas might have played a vital role in chemical evolution and the origin of life. An array of metal octacyanomolybdates (MOCMos) has been synthesized, and their role as catalyst in the formation of nucleobases from formamide has been studied. Formamide, a hydrolysis product of HCN, was taken as starting material for the formation of nucleobases. Recent studies support the presence of formamide on some celestial bodies. Metal octacyanomolybdates, MOCMos (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd), are found to be highly efficient catalysts in t

Comparison of prebiotic effects of arabinoxylan oligosaccharides and inulin in a simulator of the human intestinal microbial ecosystem.

In this study, the prebiotic potential of arabinoxylan oligosaccharides (AXOS) was compared with inulin in two simulators of the human intestinal microbial ecosystem. Microbial breakdown of both oligosaccharides and short-chain fatty acid production was colon compartment specific, with ascending and transverse colon being the predominant site of inulin and AXOS degradation, respectively. Lactate levels (+5.5 mM) increased in the ascending colon during AXOS supplementation, while propionate levels (+5.1 mM) increased in the transverse colon. The concomitant decrease in lactate in the transverse

The gamma-irradiation of aqueous hydrogen cyanide in the presence of ferrocyanide or ferricyanide: implications to prebiotic chemistry.

The gamma-irradiation of 0.1 M, O2-free, aqueous HCN was studied in the presence of ferrocyanide or ferricyanide in the concentration range 10(-3) - 10(-5) M. This study was carried out in order to get an insight into the possible role that cyanocomplexes of iron may have played in promoting prebiotic syntheses via the free-radical oligomerization of HCN. It was found that ferrocyanide or ferricyanide have no effect on the irradiation of 0.1 M HCN solutions at concentrations < or = 10(-4) M. At high concentrations, 10(-3) M, they lead to a marked decrease in the conversion of HCN. There was no

Carbon and energy yields in prebiotic syntheses using atmospheres containing CH4, CO and CO2.

Yields based on carbon are usually reported in prebiotic experiments, while energy yields (moles cal-1) are more useful in estimating the yields of products that would have been obtained from the primitive atmosphere of the earth. Energy yields for the synthesis of HCN and H2CO from a spark discharge were determined for various mixtures of CH4, CO, CO2, H2, H2O, N2 and NH3. The maximum yields of HCN and H2CO from CH4, CO, and CO2 as carbon sources are about 4 X 10(-8) moles cal-1.

Maternal choline and prebiotic supplementation ameliorate PCOS traits and reduce intergenerational transmission in rats.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder with strong heritability, driven by complex metabolic, epigenetic, and gut-microbial dysregulation. While both epigenetic and microbial axes are implicated in PCOS, their integration and contribution to intergenerational transmission remain poorly understood. We investigated whether maternal choline (methyl-donor) and galactooligosaccharide (GOS, prebiotic) supplementation could restore gut-epigenome homeostasis and prevent vertical transmission of PCOS traits in rats. PCOS was induced using dehydroepiandrosterone plus high-fat di

Efficacy of a probiotic-prebiotic mix on chronic constipation symptoms in the elderly: results of a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Constipation affects about 25% of the general population, with higher prevalence in elderly people. Many of the products used for the treatment of constipation, laxatives and drugs with this indication have undesirable effects such as dehydration, electrolyte disturbances and diarrhea or side effects that, in frail patients with comorbidities, such as the elderly, can have clinically significant consequences. For these reasons, the treatment of chronic constipation constitutes, especially in the elderly patient, a partial unmet medical need. METHODS: This interventional, single-ar

The use of xylanase enzyme and inulin prebiotic supplementation to support broiler chicken production performance.

Two isoenergetic (12.05 MJ/kg ME) and isonitrogenic (approximately 200 g/kg CP) basal diets were prepared using 670 g/kg of wheat with low fibre and/or high fibre contents. Each basal diet was divided into four portions: one remained as is and fed as control (C); the second was the C supplemented with 100 FXU/kg of a commercial xylanase (XYL); the third was the C plus 20 g/kg of inulin (IN) powder; and the fourth was the C supplemented with both XYL and IN at the same inclusion rates, resulting in a total of eight experimental diets. A study was conducted from 10 to 21 days of age involving 32

Wheat Bran-Derived Carbohydrates as Functional Food Ingredients: Extraction and Evaluation of Prebiotic Potential.

Wheat bran (WB) is a rich source of non-starch polysaccharides, particularly arabinoxylans, which can be valorized into functional food ingredients with potential prebiotic properties. This study investigated the extraction of carbohydrates from WB using ultrasonic and hydrothermal treatments and evaluated their technological and functional characteristics and in vitro prebiotic potential. The extraction yields reached 43.47% and 72.36% for ultrasonic and hydrothermal methods, respectively. The extracted carbohydrates exhibited low in vitro digestibility (0.86%-2.04%), indicating resistance to

Bioactive molecules from Agave salmiana bagasse: Study of their antioxidant, prebiotic potential, and cytotoxicity.

Bioactive compounds present in agro-industrial waste have been an attractive alternative for reducing current health problems. However, high concentrations of bioactive compounds may affect the growth of intestinal microbiota and cause unpleasant flavors. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of reducing the content of bioactive compounds present in Agave salmiana waste on antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP), the prebiotic potential using probiotic strains (Bifidobacterium lactis, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei, and Enterococcus faecium), and cytotoxicity. Prebiotic intervention changes host and microbe proteomes in plasma extracellular vesicles of Parkinson's disease.

We hypothesize that intestinal microbiome dysbiosis may contribute to Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis. Our prior proof-of-concept clinical trial demonstrated that a precision prebiotic intervention improved microbiota dysbiosis and alleviated gastrointestinal and motor symptoms in PD patients. Building on this, we analyzed plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) from participants to explore EVs as a dynamic PD biomarker and to assess the systemic effects of a microbiota-directed intervention. Using mass spectrometry-based proteomics of EVs from PD and healthy control (HC) participants, we id

Non-equilibrium preparation of (E)-phosphinimine (HPNH, X1A') - a precursor to prebiotic phosphorylating agents.

Phosphorus-nitrogen compounds play crucial roles as intermediates in aza-Wittig reactions and serve as key precursors to prebiotic phosphorylating agents such as amidophosphonates linked to the Origins of Life. However, their formation mechanisms under astrophysical conditions remain largely unexplored. Here, we report the first formation of (E)-phosphinimine (HPNH, X1A') - the simplest iminophosphane - in low-temperature interstellar model ices composed of phosphine (PH3) and ammonia (NH3) exposed to galactic cosmic ray proxies in the form of high-energy electrons. Multiomics insights into the effects of prebiotics on physical function and metabolism in adults with obesity and knee osteoarthritis.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent, painful, degenerative disease lacking effective disease-modifying drugs. The rise in obesity has increased the prevalence of metabolic OA, underscoring the need for effective management to delay or prevent knee replacement. Prebiotics confer improvement in physical function and metabolic health in adults with comorbid knee OA and obesity by unknown mechanisms. Here, we integrated metagenomic and metabolomic analyzes to investigate prebiotic fiber-linked mechanisms along the gut-knee axis. By reshaping the composition and function of the gut microbiota,

Prebiotic peptide formation triggered by urea-rich warm little ponds on early earth.

In the study of the origin of life, the polymerization of amino acids into peptides in water faces significant thermodynamic barriers, often referred to as the "water problem." It has been demonstrated that the reaction between urea and amino acids can efficiently yield carbamoyl amino acids (CAAs); however, whether urea and amino acids can polymerize into peptides through early geochemical reactions remains unclear. This study demonstrates that urea and amino acids at equivalent concentrations can polymerize into peptides under mild alkaline conditions (65 °C, pH 9.0). Subsequent mechanistic

Prebiotic Supplementation in Celiac Disease: A Systematic Review of Clinical Efficacy, Safety, and Nutritional Outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite a strict gluten-free diet (GFD), many patients with celiac disease (CD) continue to experience symptoms and nutrient deficiencies. Prebiotics, non-digestible substrates that foster beneficial bacteria and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, may offer adjunctive benefits, though their role in CD remains unclear. We aimed to determine the clinical efficacy, safety, and nutritional outcomes of prebiotics in CD. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and CENTRAL through May 2025 for clinical studies evalu
