[The use of iontophoresis in dental practice].

The effect of hypersensitivity reducing local NaF-gel treatment with or without iontophoresis was evaluated. Air test was used for pain and pain reduction evaluation. Three consecutive treatments (0, 2, 5 weeks) and a 3 month control examination was performed on 20 and 16 patients. Additional iontophoretic treatment with Pikomed-Dention equipment was found more effective than topical NaF alone. Therapeutic use of iontophoresis could be employed in several other areas of dentistry. More attention should be paid to its use in caries prevention.

Prevalence of Pediatric Preventive Dental Visits Among Children in Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Early preventive dental visits are critical to reducing oral diseases in children and establishing lifelong oral hygiene behaviors. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child's first dental visit occur by age one. However, in Saudi Arabia, limited evidence exists on parental awareness, attitudes, and barriers toward this recommendation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the timing of the first dental visit among Saudi children and to identify parental knowledge, barriers, and sociodemographic factors associated with compliance with AAPD guidel

Tuberculosis: Occupational risk among dental healthcare workers and risk for infection among dental patients. A meta-narrative review.

OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis transmission among healthcare workers (HCWs) and patients is due to the level of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT) circulation in the community and in the healthcare settings where HCWs are active. In contrast, most papers about dentistry report that dental HCWs (DHCWs) and patients are at relatively high risk, mainly based on tuberculosis case series that occurred in the 80's-90's. This meta-narrative review was designed to evaluate the tuberculosis risk in dentistry accounting for the historical-geographical contexts. DATA: All available studies reporting data on MT i

ASSESSMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE RISK FACTORS, INCLUDING COVID-19, AMONG HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN EAST KAZAKHSTAN REGION.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-related infections (HCRI) remain a major global concern, especially in dentistry, where exposure to saliva, blood, and aerosols increases the risk of cross-infection. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the vulnerability of dental professionals to airborne pathogens, prompting stricter protocols such as enhanced PPE and ventilation. However, challenges remain due to limited biosafety knowledge and inconsistent preventive practices. AIM OF STUDY: This investigation aimed to assess the risk factors associated with infectious disease transmission, including COVID-19, among h

A Thorough Analysis of Changing Antibiotic Resistance in Dental Practice: A Narrative Review.

Antibiotic resistance (ABR) is now a global health issue with major significance in dental practice. While dentistry accounts for only a small percentage of total antibiotic prescriptions, its misuse and overuse are major forces behind the development of resistance. This review extensively summarizes the changing trends in ABR in dental practice, highlighting the contributions of overprescription, self-medication, the absence of standardized guidelines, and educational deficiencies among dentists. The implications of ABR include inferior treatment outcomes and enhanced risks to public health t

Accuracy of transfer learning in predicting peri-implantitis onset from intraoral radiograph: A multi-center longitudinal retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The growing application of artificial intelligence in dentistry has opened new opportunities for predicting peri-implantitis (PI) using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Transfer learning, where knowledge from a model pre-trained on a large dataset is adapted to a new, domain-specific task, may enhance performance, particularly when medical datasets are limited. This study evaluated the ability of several pre-trained CNN architectures applied to baseline 2D intraoral radiographs to predict peri-implantitis onset. METHODS: A retrospective multi-center study was conducted at the

Factors influencing the retention rate of resin based pit and fissure sealant among primary school children- A randomised clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: In modern dentistry, the focus is more on preventing caries than treating them, which helps preserve tooth structure. There is an approximately 50 % prevalence of caries on the occlusal surface in school children. Pits and fissures with irregularities and invasions are responsible for this. In dentistry, to overcome these problems, different sealant technique is introduced, for instance, the conventional method, using a bur, using air abrasion, etc. Therefore, this clinical trial was designed to evaluate the retention rate of sealant using different application techniques. [Advances in root canal filling materials used in primary teeth].

Root canal treatment of primary teeth is the most common treatment method for pulpitis and periapical periodontitis in pediatric dentistry. Effective root canal treatment could prevent the teeth from occurring of periapical infection or promote the healing of periapical lesions of teeth with periodontitis for preserving the decayed tooth, preventing early loss of primary teeth and inducing the formation of normal permanent dentition. The material selection for root canal filling is one of the most important factors influencing the treatment outcome of root canal treatment. So far, there has be

Multidisciplinary esthetic rehabilitation in a patient with worn dentition. Hybrid restorative treatment with over 3 years' follow-up.

Restorative clinicians frequently encounter difficulties when managing patients with worn dentition. Diagnosis and treatment planning for these cases necessitate a comprehensive assessment of multiple factors such as causative factors, esthetic concerns, arch alignment, and functionality, but also prognosis, preventive measures, and long-term follow-up. Although significant progress has been made in contemporary dentistry in terms of prevention, periodontal maintenance, and preservation of natural teeth, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of patients suffering from tooth wear. Modification of food and beverages to reduce the erosive potential.

In view of the increasing prevalence of dental erosion and erosive tooth wear, preventive approaches are increasingly becoming the focus of interest. A proven way to reduce the erosive potential of food and drinks is adding calcium. However, whole meals and the taste of calcium-enriched drinks have not been studied. This study aimed to create erosion-protective recipes for food and beverages. In part 1, erosive meals were modified with calcium-rich ingredients. In part 2, varying amounts of CaCl₂ were added to acidic drinks. A sensory panel assessed flavour. Caries-free human teeth served as e

New strategies and mechanisms for targeting Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation to prevent dental caries: A review.

Dental caries, a prevalent oral infectious disease, is intricately linked to the biofilm formation on the tooth surfaces by oral microbes. Among these, Streptococcus mutans plays a central role in the initiation and progression of caries due to its ability to produce glucosyltransferases, synthesize extracellular polysaccharides, and facilitate bacterial adhesion and aggregation. This leads to the formation of biofilms where the bacteria metabolize dietary carbohydrates to produce acids. Therefore, devising effective strategies to inhibit S. mutans biofilm formation is crucial for dental carie

Role of nasal endoscopy in chronic osteomyelitis of maxilla and zygoma: a case report.

Osteomyelitis of the jaws was relatively common before the era of antibiotic therapy and preventive and restorative dentistry. Osteomyelitis is an acute or chronic inflammatory process that can involve cortical and trabecular aspects of bone or bone marrow. Cranial bones are infrequently involved, but spreading of inflammation with involvement of surrounding structures represents important risk, such as cerebral abscess, encephalitis, or meningitis. The mandible is more commonly involved than the maxilla. Dentogenic infections cause 38% of mandibular and 25% of maxillary involvement. Involveme

The effect of fluorine and homeopathic medicines in rats fed cariogenic diet.

Although some sectors of dentistry have benefited from technological advances, dental caries is still a major problem. Prevention and treatment of dental caries by fluorine is considered a major advance in public health. Nevertheless fluorosis, caused by ingestion of excessive amounts of fluorine during the period of teeth formation, is of great concern. In accordance with the homeopathic doctrine, minimum doses of fluorine and other substances could prevent and/or treat caries. In this experiment, we compared the preventive action of fluorine and evaluated the effect of homeopathic medicines
