Prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) isolates, a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the overall antibiotic susceptibility of Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), a bacterium implicated in acne vulgaris, with a particular focus on clindamycin and fluoroquinolones, which are commonly used in inflammatory acne treatment. METHODS: A systematic search of Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science and EMBASE databases was conducted to identify relevant studies. Pooled prevalence estimates were calculated using a random-effects model, and additional analyses included quality assessment, evaluation of publication bias, meta-regression and subgroup analyses based

Bone Flap Resorption Associated with Indolent Propionibacterium acnes Infection After Cranioplasty: Case Report with Pathological Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Autologous bone resorption is a frequent complication of cranioplasty, often necessitating reoperation. The etiology of this phenomenon is unknown, although it has recently been associated with indolent Propionibacterium acnes infection. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 59-year-old man initially presented with a traumatic acute subdural hematoma treated with emergent decompressive hemicraniectomy and hematoma evacuation. His bone flap was cryopreserved. He underwent cranioplasty with autologous bone 3 months later. Over the subsequent 14 months, serial imaging demonstrated progressive bone fla…

Topical application of phenolic compounds suppresses Propionibacterium acnes-induced inflammatory responses in mice with ear edema.

Acne vulgaris (AV), a severe chronic inflammatory dermatosis, commonly treated with systemic or topical antibiotics that exacerbate bacterial resistance and pose adverse side effects, new approaches for suppressing or reducing Propionibacterium acnes-induced inflammatory responses and thereby treating AV remain necessary. In response, the goal of our study was to investigate the therapeutic potential of phenolic compounds in the in vivo inflammatory process induced by P. acnes. Mice were intradermally challenged with a suspension containing 1.0 × 107 CFU/mL of P. acnes per ear, after which gro…

Correlation between hemolytic profile and phylotype of Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) and orthopedic implant infection.

INTRODUCTION: Cutibacterium acnes is a recognized culprit for implant-associated infections, but positive cultures do not always indicate clinically relevant infection. Studies have shown a correlation between the β-hemolytic phenotype of C. acnes and its infectious capacity, but correlation with genetic phylotype has not been performed in literature. The purpose of this study is to evaluate β-hemolysis phenotype, genetic phylotype, and mid-term clinical outcomes of C. acnes isolated from orthopedic surgical sites. METHODS: Fifty-four C. acnes isolates previously obtained from surgical wounds

Don't Let Its Name Fool You: Relapsing Thoracic Actinomycosis Caused by Pseudopropionibacterium propionicum (Formerly Propionibacterium propionicum).

BACKGROUND Pseudopropionibacterium propionicum was called Propionibacterium propionicum until a recent taxonomy change in 2016. Diseases caused by P. propionicum resemble actinomycosis and thus differ dramatically from the infectious syndromes caused by common cutaneous Propionibacterium spp. However, if treating physicians are not familiar with P. propionicum and its clinical presentations, it is possible for them to regard it as a skin contaminant such as Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes). CASE REPORT A 71-year-old man with past surgical history of right pneumonectomy wa…

MLST typing of antimicrobial-resistant Propionibacterium acnes isolates from patients with moderate to severe acne vulgaris.

Molecular typing data on antimicrobial-resistant Propionibacterium strains are limited in the literature. We examined antimicrobial resistance profiles and the underlying resistance mechanisms in Propionibacterium spp. isolates recovered from patients with moderate to severe acne vulgaris in Greece. The clonallity of the resistant Propionibacterium acnes isolates was also investigated. Propionibacterium spp. isolates were detected using Tryptone-Yeast Extract-Glucose (TYG) agar plates supplemented with 4% furazolidone. Erythromycin, clindamycin, vancomycin, penicillin, co-trimoxazole, doxycycl…

Anti-acne activity of Selaginella involvens extract and its non-antibiotic antimicrobial potential on Propionibacterium acnes.

Acne is a typical condition of adolescence and is caused by multi-factorial events including hormonal, microbiological and immunological mechanisms. Although there has been much debate about the direct involvement of bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes is now believed to contribute to the inflammatory stages of the condition, and thus initiate the inflamed lesion. The present study examined the anti-acne properties of the Selaginella involvens extract (SIE) in cell models. Primarily, SIE was not found to be cytotoxic under 50 microg/mL, and revealed the inhibitory effect on both nitric oxide (NO…

The Protective Effects of Cath-MH With Anti-Propionibacterium Acnes and Anti-Inflammation Functions on Acne Vulgaris.

Acne vulgaris is a common adolescent skin condition which is mainly caused by Propionibacterium acnes overcolonization and subsequent inflammation. Our previous studies have demonstrated that Cath-MH, an antimicrobial peptide from the skin of the frog Microhyla heymonsivogt, possesses potential antimicrobial, LPS-binding, and anti-septicemic properties. However, its protective effects and potential mechanisms against acne vulgaris are still unclear. In the present study, its anti-P. acnes effects were measured by two-fold broth dilution method, agglutination assay, scanning electron microscopy…

Short lipopeptides specifically inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes with a dual antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Propionibacterium acnes is a Gram-positive bacterium associated with the skin disorder acne. In this study, as fatty acids are considered to be important in the life habitat of P. acnes, we tested our lipopeptide library in an attempt to create potent P. acnes-specific antimicrobial agents. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: The antimicrobial activity of various lipopeptides was determined by measuring their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). Lipids from P. acnes were used to explore their mode of action. RAW264.7 cells stimulated with LPS and P. acnes respectively were used …

Preoperative Skin-Surface Cultures Can Help to Predict the Presence of Propionibacterium in Shoulder Arthroplasty Wounds.

BACKGROUND: Propionibacterium species are commonly cultured from specimens harvested at the time of revision shoulder arthroplasty. These bacteria reside in normal sebaceous glands, out of reach of surgical skin preparation. The arthroplasty incision transects these structures, which allows Propionibacterium to inoculate the wound and to potentially lead to the formation of a biofilm on the inserted implant. To help identify patients who are at increased risk for wound inoculation, we investigated whether preoperative cultures of the specimens from the unprepared skin surface were predictive o…

Strains of the Propionibacterium acnes type III lineage are associated with the skin condition progressive macular hypomelanosis.

Progressive macular hypomelanosis (PMH) is a common skin disorder that causes hypopigmentation in a variety of skin types. Although the underlying aetiology of this condition is unclear, there is circumstantial evidence that links the skin bacterium Propionibacterium acnes to the condition. We now describe the first detailed population genetic analysis of P. acnes isolates recovered from paired lesional and non-lesional skin of PMH patients. Our results demonstrate a strong statistical association between strains from the type III phylogenetic lineage and PMH lesions (P = 0.0019), but not thos…

Propionibacterium acnes populations involved in deep pathological samples and their dynamics along the cardiac surgical pathway.

Propionibacterium acnes belongs to the normal skin microbiota, but it is also responsible for acne vulgaris and causes serious infections such as endocarditis and surgical site infections (SSI). The P. acnes population is structured into phylogenetic groups, with phylotype I being associated with acne. Herein, we explore the link between phylotypes and clinical origins in a collection of P. acnes isolated from different body sites, involved in deep infections or healthcare-associated infections (HAI), with particular emphasis on strains from cardiac SSI. Cardiac SSI have been further studied i…

SIG1273: a new cosmetic functional ingredient to reduce blemishes and Propionibacterium acnes in acne prone skin.

BACKGROUND: Propionibacterium acnes is a major contributing factor to the inflammatory component of acne. The interaction of P. acnes with keratinocytes leads to an innate immune response via activation of toll-like receptors (TLR2, TLR4) resulting in the production and secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators. SIG1273, an isoprenylcysteine small molecule modulates inflammatory signaling pathways and kills P. acnes. SIG1273 represents a novel cosmetic functional ingredient that provides relief from blemishes in acne prone skin. OBJECTIVE: To assess the keratinocyte response and microbial growt…
