Investigation of Proprioceptive Responses to Passive Lower Limb Movements Based on Corticokinematic Coherence.

Corticokinematic coherence (CKC) is the phase coupling between limb kinematics and cortical neurophysiological signals, reflecting cortical processing of proprioceptive afference. While previous CKC research has primarily focused on passive finger movements, cortical responses to passive lower limb movements remain insufficiently explored. This study developed a lower limb movement actuator to deliver rhythmic passive lower limb movements across a range of frequencies and amplitudes. Ten healthy participants were recruited to evaluate how stimulation parameters influence CKC, computed from coh

Proprioceptive ability at the lips and jaw measured using the same psychophysical discrimination task.

In the human face, the muscles and joints that generate movement have different properties. Whereas the jaw is a conventional condyle joint, … ructures were significantly correlated (r = 0.5, p = 0.018). These data extend the understanding of proprioception being correlated for the same left and right joints and correlated within the same structure (e.g. ankle dorsiflexion and inversion), to include use-dependant proprioception, with performance in different structures being correlated through extended …

Changes in sensory reweighting of proprioceptive information during standing balance with age and disease.

With sensory reweighting, reliable sensory information is selected over unreliable information during balance by dynamically combining this information. We used system identification techniques to show the weight and the adaptive process of weight change of proprioceptive information during standing balance with age and specific diseases. Ten healthy young subjects (aged between 20 and 30 yr) and 44 elderly subjects (aged above 65 yr) encompassing 10 healthy elderly, 10 with cataract, 10 with polyneuropathy, and 14 with impaired balance, participated in the study. Hip proprioceptive feedback influences the control of mediolateral stability during human walking.

Active control of the mediolateral location of the feet is an important component of a stable bipedal walking pattern, although the roles of sensory feedback in this process are unclear. In the present experiments, we tested whether hip abductor proprioception influenced the control of mediolateral gait motion. Participants performed a series of quiet standing and treadmill walking trials. In some trials, 80-Hz vibration was applied intermittently over the right gluteus medius (GM) to evoke artificial proprioceptive feedback. During walking, the GM was vibrated during either right leg stance (…

Micro movements of the upper limb in fibromyalgia: The relation to proprioceptive accuracy and visual feedback.

The purpose of this study was to explore the role of visual and proprioceptive feedback in upper limb posture control in fibromyalgia (FM) and to assess the coherence between acceleration measurements of upper limb micro movements and surface electromyography (sEMG) of shoulder muscle activity (upper trapezius and deltoid). Twenty-five female FM patients and 25 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) performed three precision motor tasks: (1) maintain a steady shoulder abduction angle of 45° while receiving visual feedback about upper arm position and supporting external loads (0.5, 1, or

Limb position sense, proprioceptive drift and muscle thixotropy at the human elbow joint.

These experiments on the human forearm are based on the hypothesis that drift in the perceived position of a limb over time can be explained by receptor adaptation. Limb position sense was measured in 39 blindfolded subjects using a forearm-matching task. A property of muscle, its thixotropy, a contraction history-dependent passive stiffness, was exploited to place muscle receptors of elbow muscles in a defined state. After the arm had been held flexed and elbow flexors contracted, we observed time-dependent changes in the perceived position of the reference arm by an average of 2.8° in the di

The rubber hand illusion reveals proprioceptive and sensorimotor differences in autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterised by differences in unimodal and multimodal sensory and proprioceptive processing, with complex biases towards local over global processing. Many of these elements are implicated in versions of the rubber hand illusion (RHI), which were therefore studied in high-functioning individuals with ASD and a typically developing control group. Both groups experienced the illusion. A number of differences were found, related to proprioception and sensorimotor processes. The ASD group showed reduced sensitivity to visuotactile-proprioceptive discrepancy but …

Proprioception of the wrist joint: a review of current concepts and possible implications on the rehabilitation of the wrist.

STUDY DESIGN: Narrative review. Recent years have brought new research findings on the subject of wrist joint proprioception, which entails an understanding of the wrist as part of a sensorimotor system where afferent information from nerve endings in the wrist joint affects the neuromuscular control of the joint. An understanding of proprioception is also essential to adequately rehabilitate patients after wrist injuries. The aim of this narrative review was to give the reader a background of proprioception as it relates to neuromuscular control and joint stability, what is presently known in…

Repetitive pointing to remembered proprioceptive targets improves 3D hand positioning accuracy.

Repetitive pointing movements to remembered proprioceptive targets were investigated to determine whether dynamic proprioception could be used to modify the initial sensorimotor conditions associated with an active definition of the target position. Twelve blindfolded subjects used proprioception to reproduce a self-selected target position as accurately as possible. Ten repetitions for each limb were completed using overhead and scapular plane pointing tasks. A 3D optical tracking system determined hand trajectory start and endpoint positions for each repetition. These positions quantified th…

[Brachial presentation of spinal pseudochoreoathetosis. The result of proprioceptive information being processed in parallel].

INTRODUCTION: The term pseudochoreoathetosis is used to refer to the choreoathetoid movements that are produced by alterations in the proprioceptive sensitivity due to damage it has suffered at some point along its course. Proprioceptive sensitivity is considered to go up as far as the cortex along the posterior cords of the spinal cord, which means that if they are injured in the cervical region there should be a sensory deficit in both the upper (UL) and lower limbs (LL). CASE REPORTS: We describe five cases of transverse myelitis with localised cervical injury that selectively and mainly a

Triggering of balance corrections and compensatory strategies in a patient with total leg proprioceptive loss.

Triggering of balance corrections may depend on both leg and trunk proprioceptive inputs. To study this issue and to determine how a total proprioceptive loss in the legs (ToLPL) would affect postural reactions in different directions, we investigated the postural control of a patient with a long-standing dorsal root ganglionopathy. This patient had absent stretch reflexes at the ankle and knee joints, delayed reflexes at the hips, but normal muscle strength. Postural control was probed with support-surface movements driven by two different experimental protocols. The first protocol concentrat

Disconnected mutants show disruption to the central projections of proprioceptive neurons in Drosophila melanogaster.

We used a P[GAL4] enhancer-trap line, C161, in conjunction with the UAS-lacZ reporter construct to visualize the central projections of a defined set of thoracic and abdominal sensory neurons in a disconnected (disco) mutant background. The results show defects in the organization of sensory axons in the larval and adult central nervous system. The defects are indicative of problems with axon growth and development and include (a) poor axon fasciculation, (b) aberrant axon growth, (c) excessive terminal branching, and (d) ectopic innervation. Sensory neuron identity appears to be normal. The d

Neuromodulation of the crab pyloric central pattern generator by serotonergic/cholinergic proprioceptive afferents.

In the stomatogastric nervous system of the crab, Cancer borealis, a set of 4 serotonergic/cholinergic proprioceptive neurons, called gastropyloric receptor (GPR) cells, have effects on the pyloric motor pattern. In a semi-intact foregut preparation, the GPR cells are not activated by movements of the pyloric filter; instead they respond to the slower movements of the gastric mill (Katz et al., 1989). Thus, their activity is not synchronized to the pyloric motor pattern. However, when the GPR cells are stimulated in an in vitro preparation in a manner that resembles their normal firing pattern

Feeling the Body in Fibromyalgia: A Narrative Review of Interoception and Proprioception within a Phenomenological Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic syndrome characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and cognitive-emotional disturbances. Increasing evidence suggests that FM also involves alterations in bodily self-awareness. In particular, disturbances in interoception and proprioception-key processes underlying the perception and integration of bodily signals-may contribute to the altered bodily experience frequently reported by patients. This review aims to synthesize empirical findings on interoceptive and proprioceptive functioning in FM and to interpret them within a phenomenological framewo…

Sensory substitution under passive guidance: Effects on proprioceptive acuity and motor performance.

Sensory substitution devices (SSDs) offer a unique framework for investigating attention, perception, and sensorimotor interactions. While previous studies have examined how the type of stimuli provided by an SSD and the exploration strategy applied during active manipulation affect perception, proprioception, and motor-exploratory performance, these factors have not been explored in the context of passive guidance through an SSD. In this study, we examined how the type of stimuli (modality-specific vs. cross-modal stimuli) and the exploration strategy used to passively guide participants (mic…
