Neuroendocrine effects of different estradiol-progestin regimens in postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: New regimens and routes of administration of hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) in climateric women are becoming available. Since there is no information on the neuroendocrine effects of sequential combined treatment with 17 beta-estradiol and a progestin, the present study evaluated the neuroendocrine, clinical vasomotor and psychological changes before and after different sequential combined HRT regimens (17 beta-estradiol plus nomegestrol acetate, or cyproterone acetate, or vaginal progesterone). Vasomotor and behavioral effects were evaluated by using the Kupperman score, while

BACKGROUND: Nurses often experience traumatic events in high-pressure clinical environments. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can negatively affect emotional well-being, concentration, clinical judgment, and workforce stability among nurses. PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness of various psychological and behavioral interventions designed to reduce PTSD and related symptoms among nurses. METHODS: A literature search across five databases identified 24 eligible studies. Effect-direction plots and one-sided binomial sign tests were used to examine the consistency and significance of inte

[A study on the psychological status of perioperative patients (II)].

In order to study the changes of the psychological status during perioperative period, we performed four different psychological tests, Spielberger's rating scale "The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)", Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Maudsley Personality Inventory (MPI) and Baum test, in 63 patients who received simple total hysterectomy for myoma of uterus. The anxiety ratings showed a significant decrease postoperatively. On the contrary, the SDS index that expresses the level of depressive mood showed no significant change during perioperative period. Moreover the patients who had …

Neuropsychological Assessment of Sport-Related Concussion.

Neuropsychological assessment is a key component in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to assessment of sport-related concussion (SRC). Currently computerized tests are the most commonly used modality of neurocognitive testing and involve both baseline and postinjury assessments. A comprehensive neuropsychological assessment should not only include neurocognitive testing but also incorporate symptom inventories, vestibular-ocular screening, and a psychological evaluation. Neuropsychological assessments are most effective when completed by a Clinical Neuropsychologist, given their spec

Oxytocin Levels in Response to Others' Suffering According to the Type of Conviction for Intimate Partner Violence Against Women.

Biopsychosocial research focusing on male perpetrators is essential to reduce the high prevalence and recidivism of Intimate Partner Violence against Women (IPVAW). Our study aimed to investigate the salivary oxytocin response to others' suffering, based on the type of conviction for IPVAW (psychological or physical), risk of recidivism, and sexist schemas. The final sample consisted of 31 men convicted of IPVAW (13 for psychological and 18 for physical violence) and 33 men without a criminal history. Psychological tests were completed, and salivary oxytocin samples were collected before and a…

Autobiographical memory and psychological distress in a sample of upper-limb amputees.

Amputation is a traumatic and life-changing event that can take years to adjust to. The present study (a) examines psychological adjustment in a specific trauma-exposed sample, (b) compares the phenomenology (e.g., vividness) of amputation-related memories to more recent memories, and (c) tests whether memory phenomenology is associated with psychological distress. A total of 24 upper-limb amputees recalled two autobiographical memories--an amputation-related memory and a recent memory--and rated the phenomenological qualities of each memory, including Vividness, Coherence, Emotional Intensity

Impact of Comorbid Psychological Distress on Stimulant Use Disorder Treatment Outcomes.

Psychological distress was assessed usi

Transient gastric irritation in the neonatal rats leads to changes in hypothalamic CRF expression, depression- and anxiety-like behavior as adults.

AIMS: A disturbance of the brain-gut axis is a prominent feature in functional bowel disorders (such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia) and psychological abnormalities are often implicated in their pathogenesis. We hypothesized that psychological morbidity in these conditions may result from gastrointestinal problems, rather than causing them. METHODS: Functional dyspepsia was induced by neonatal gastric irritation in male rats. 10-day old male Sprague-Dawley rats received 0.1% iodoacetamide (IA) or vehicle by oral gavage for 6 days. At 8-10 weeks of age, rats were tested w

Association Between Clinical Signs of Temporomandibular Disorders and Psychological Distress Among an Adult Finnish Population.

AIMS: To evaluate the association between signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and psychological distress in a general population-based sample of Finnish adults. METHODS: The Health 2000 Survey was conducted in 2000-2001 by the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Finland. Of the sample of adults aged 30 or over (n=8,028), 79% participated in a clinical oral health examination, which included examination of TMD signs. Pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome.

Despite the continued absence of a definitive biomarker for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), research over the last three decades has identified a wide range of underlying pathophysiological abnormalities. Peripheral mechanisms include gastrointestinal infection, changes in the gut microbiome, visceral hypersensitivity, increased intestinal permeability, low-grade mucosal inflammation and altered immune function, abnormal gastrointestinal motility, and the role of serotonin, bile acid metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism. Central mechanisms include psychological health and altered central pa

[Specific points of view on the education and psychological developement in children with cystic fibrosis].

A sample of 21 parents were interviewed about the psychological development of their Cystic Fibrosis children and their way of education. Additionally 18 children - 6 to 15 years old - were examined by means of psychological tests. The results of the interviews demonstrate favourable behaviour in education, the parents being tolerant and consequent. The children were often described as reasonable and mature. There were seldom complaints about problems in education and behaviour. Some families are exercising an overprotecting way of education. The positive general impression with regard to the …

Renal transplantation in children: a psychological survey.

Psychological tests were carried out on 24 children with renal disease during the time they were hemodialyzed and after a minimum of one year after their transplant. These investigations included regular interviews with children and families, drawings and their commentaries, and projective techniques: Rohrschach tests. The results of these investigations indicated that the psychological status of the transplanted child could not be singled out and isolated from the effects of being ill, the different therapeutic procedures, and the personal history. Beyond the appearance adolescents give of a …

Analogy tests and psychopathology at follow-up after open heart surgery.

A study of 100 coronary bypass and cardiac valvular surgery patients investigated whether preoperative brain damage, as measured by the Conceptual Level Analogy Test (CLAT), is a major risk factor for postoperative psychiatric symptoms and mortality. Three cognitive psychological tests, including the CLAT, and psychatric interviews were given preoperatively, postoperatively, and at 18-month follow-up. Surgical outcome was specified as: Catastrophic Outcome (death or severe stroke), Psychiatric Complications, or Good Outcome (survival with no psychiatric complications). Inhospital outcome relat…
