Domain-Specific Olfaction in Children and Adults in the Era of Modulator Therapy for Cystic Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about when people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) begin to experience olfactory decline, or whether sustained use of novel highly effective modulator therapies (HEMT) is predictive of better olfaction. This study evaluated psychophysical olfactory performance and HEMT-associated olfactory outcomes in children and adults with CF. METHODS: In this cross-sectional installment of a longitudinal study, individuals with a physician-confirmed diagnosis of CF completed questionnaires and psychophysical olfactory assessment (i.e., standardized assessment of olfactory domains in

Comprehensive manual handling limits for lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying activities.

The objective of this study was to develop a set of mathematical models for manual lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying activities that would result in establishing load capacity limits to protect the lower back against occupational low-back disorders. In order to establish safe guidelines, a three-stage process was used. First, psychophysical data was used to generate the models' discounting factors and recommended load capacities. Second, biomechanical analysis was used to refine the recommended load capacities. Third, physiological criteria were used to validate the models' discounting f

Form-cue invariant second-order neuronal responses to contrast modulation in primate area V2.

A fundamental task of the visual system is to extract figure-ground boundaries between images of objects, which in natural scenes are often defined not only by luminance differences but also by "second-order" contrast or texture differences. Responses to contrast modulation (CM) and other second-order stimuli have been extensively studied in human psychophysics, but the neuronal substrates of second-order responses in nonhuman primates remain poorly understood. In this study, we have recorded single neurons in area V2 of macaque monkeys, using both CM patterns as well as conventional luminance…

Predicting auditory tone-in-noise detection performance: the effects of neural variability.

Collecting and analyzing psychophysical data is a fundamental mechanism for the study of auditory processing. However, because this approach relies on human listening experiments, it can be costly in terms of time and money spent gathering the data. The development of a theoretical, model-based procedure capable of accurately predicting psychophysical behavior could alleviate these issues by enabling researchers to rapidly evaluate hypotheses prior to conducting experiments. This approach may also provide additional insight into auditory processing by establishing a link between psychophysical

Interplay of Psychosocial, Clinical and Modulation Mechanisms in Chronic TMD-Related Disability.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a multifactorial condition characterised by pain and functional impairment in the orofacial region. Although psychosocial and psychophysical factors significantly influence chronic pain, their combined impact on functional disability remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of clinical, psychosocial and psychophysical variables on functional disability related to chronic pain in muscular TMD, utilising principal component analysis (PCA) and logistic regression. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with 77 women with painf

Assessing olfactory function in laryngectomees using the Sniffin'Sticks test battery and chemosensory evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Laryngectomees are often considered to be completely anosmic. The aim of this study was to determine whether anosmia in laryngectomees reflects diminished transport of odorants to the olfactory epithelium or olfactory epithelial damage. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-five laryngectomees were examined psychophysically using the Sniffin'Sticks test battery. All patients rated the degree of their subjectively perceived deficit on a rating scale. Chemosensory evoked potentials were also recorded in 11 of 25 patients. RESULTS: Sixteen patients complained very little about their smell

[Fitness for drivers].

Driving vehicles for transportation of people and/or goods is a high responsibility job, that exposes to several occupational risks (psychophysical tiring; health damages by weight lifting, noise, vibrations and shakings; toxic and irritative effects by atmospheric pollutants). The Italian legislation defines the minimal psychophysical requirements for the driving licence, that is indispensable to be employed. The occupational physician should then provide the sanitary surveillance and cooperate to training and education.

Population-response model for vibrotactile spatial summation.

A computational model based on previous physiological and psychophysical data is presented for the human Pacinian (P) psychophysical channel. The model can predict the probability of detection in simple psychophysical tasks, and hence psychometric functions and thresholds. The model simulates stimulating variable and fixed glabrous skin sites with different-sized contactors and includes spatial variation of monkey P-fiber sensitivities. Therefore, it is especially suitable for studying spatial summation, i.e. the improvement of threshold with increasing contactor area. Selective contributions

Visual Perception of Intuitive Physics and Its Computational Foundations.

The visual system is attuned to the statistical regularities of the visual world, enabling rapid, almost reflexive, and highly accurate recognition of object identities and categories. This article presents recent advances across psychophysics, computational modeling, and cognitive neuroscience, which together suggest that the visual system is just as attuned to the laws of physics governing our physical world. We review psychophysical work showing that vision incorporates intuitive physics as a rapid, spontaneous, and stimulus-driven process. We review the computational framework of physics-b…

Attentional processing in a modified multiple object-tracking paradigm.

Previous research examining dynamic visual search showed that pop-out effects can be observed for color targets, though it is unclear whether these effects are attributable to the same pre-attentive mechanisms driving pop-out in static displays (Fu et al., Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, 82, 3329-3339, 2020). Other research examining multiple-object tracking (MOT) demonstrated that people can track three to five objects simultaneously, with some uncertainty about the flexibility of attentional allocation during tracking (Meyerhoff et al., Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, 79, 125…

Pupillometric and perceptual approaches provide independent estimates of melanopsin activity in humans.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Melanopsin-expressing retinal ganglion cells, which provide light information to time sleep and entrain circadian clocks, also influence perceived brightness raising the possibility that psychophysical paradigms could be used to explore the origins and implications of variability in melanopic sensitivity. We aimed to develop accessible psychophysical tests of melanopic vision and relate outcomes with a pupillometric measure of melanopsin function (post-illumination pupil response) and prior light exposure. METHODS: Individually calibrated pairs of isoluminant stimuli differi

A compact clinical instrument for quantifying suppression.

PURPOSE: We describe a compact and convenient clinical apparatus for the measurement of suppression based on a previously reported laboratory-based approach. In addition, we report and validate a novel, rapid psychophysical method for measuring suppression using this apparatus, which makes the technique more applicable to clinical practice. METHODS: By using a Z800 dual pro head-mounted display driven by a MAC laptop, we provide dichoptic stimulation. Global motion stimuli composed of arrays of moving dots are presented to each eye. One set of dots move in a coherent direction (termed signal)

Pyrfume: A window to the world's olfactory data.

Advances in theoretical understanding are frequently unlocked by access to large, diverse experimental datasets. Our understanding of olfactory neuroscience and psychophysics remain years behind the other senses, in part because rich datasets linking olfactory stimuli with their corresponding percepts, behaviors, and neural pathways remain scarce. Here we present a concerted effort to unlock and unify dozens of stimulus-linked olfactory datasets across species and modalities under a unified framework called Pyrfume. We present examples of how researchers might use Pyrfume to conduct novel anal…

[Cortical blindness].

Cortical blindness refers to a visual loss induced by a bilateral occipital lesion. The very strong cooperation between psychophysics, cognitive psychology, neurophysiology and neuropsychology these latter twenty years as well as recent progress in cerebral imagery have led to a better understanding of neurovisual deficits, such as cortical blindness. It thus becomes possible now to propose an earlier diagnosis of cortical blindness as well as new perspectives for rehabilitation in children as well as in adults. On the other hand, studying complex neurovisual deficits, such as cortical blindne…

Velocity sensitivity of areas 17 and 18 of the cat.

Velocity sensitivity of areas 17 and 18 of the cat has been evaluated by preparing neuronal velocity-response (VR) curves in paralyzed and anaesthetized cats. VR curves suggest two possible mechanisms for neuronal coding of stimulus velocity as well as criterion for distinguishing between cells involved in analysis of stationary or moving objects. VR curves differ between cortical areas and with retinal eccentricity. Neurones with larger receptive fields (RFs) become, on the average, sensitive to faster velocities. Parallels with human psychophysics are pointed out as support of the suggestion…

Cortical Origins of the Flash-Lag Effect distortions: The Influence of Retinotopic Map Architecture.

The flash-lag effect (FLE) is an illusion whereby the position of a moving object is perceived as being offset in the direction of movement … E should be affected by discontinuities and anisotropies of the retinotopic map architecture. Using psychophysics in humans (female ratio of 15/24) we show that the FLE is strongly affected by crossing and the direction of motion in respect to retinotopic features, such as vertical and horizontal meridians and the fovea. The specificity of how early visual cort …

Gaze-centered spatial coding of touch on a hand-held tool.

Humans possess the remarkable ability to project tactile sensations outside their body and onto a hand-held tool that they are using. Despite nearly a century of research, the computations underlying this projection have not been adequately addressed. In the present study, we used model-driven psychophysics to fill this gap. We hypothesized that tool-based sensory projection involves the remapping of touch from sensory feedback in the hand into an egocentric coordinate system. We first formalized the computational steps underlying tactile remapping. We designed a novel tool-sensing experiment …

Reduction of higher-order occipital GABA and impaired visual perception in acute major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex state-dependent psychiatric illness for which biomarkers linking psychophysical, biochemical, and psychopathological changes remain yet elusive, though. Earlier studies demonstrate reduced GABA in lower-order occipital cortex in acute MDD leaving open its validity and significance for higher-order visual perception, though. The goal of our study is to fill that gap by combining psychophysical investigation of visual perception with measurement of GABA concentration in middle temporal visual area (hMT+) in acute depressed MDD. Psychophysically, we ob

Proprioception Training and Surrogate Outcomes: A Systematic Review of Definitions, Measures, and Effectiveness Claims.

BACKGROUND: "Proprioception training" is widely advocated in rehabilitation and sports practice, yet the term encompasses heterogeneous constructs, interventions, and outcomes. Many trials infer proprioceptive benefits from surrogate outcomes (balance, strength, or pain) rather than direct psychophysical indices. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine how proprioception is defined and measured, and how improvement is claimed, in randomized controlled trials. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were se
