Human performance in many visual and cognitive tasks declines with age, the rate of decline being task dependent. Here, we used a multiple-object tracking (MOT) task to provide a clear demonstration of a steep cognitive decline that begins relatively early in adult life. Stimuli consisted of 8 dots that moved along linear trajectories from left to right. At the midpoint of their trajectories, a certain number of dots, D (1, 2 or 3), deviated either clockwise or counter-clockwise by a certain magnitude (57 degrees, 38 degrees or 19 degrees); the task for observers was to identify the direction

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the visual acuity measured by visual tracking and by preferential looking.
METHODS: We examined 51 healthy full-term infants between three and 93 days of age. Visual acuity was tested with two different methods. One method was visual tracking (smooth and saccadic pursuit), recorded with an infrared photo-oculographic technique. For stimulation of visual tracking a square of 9.4 degrees of visual angle with vertical gratings (0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 cycles per degree) moved at a constant velocity of 7.5 degrees/sec. for 38 sec. on a surface o

We report eye movement findings in 30 patients with latent nystagmus and who were found to have a variety of associated oculomotor disorders. Latent nystagmus is defined clinically as nystagmus which appears on covering one eye and beats towards the uncovered eye. Recordings showed that the latent nystagmus in 28 patients had slow phases with linear or exponentially decreasing velocity. This nystagmus is termed 'LN'. In 13 of these patients certain manoeuvres (e.g. pursuit) provoked nystagmus with exponentially increasing slow phase velocities characteristic of the congenital form of nystagmus

BACKGROUND: Oculomotor abnormalities are recognized as potential biomarkers in Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, their broader clinical adoption can be hindered by the accessibility and practicality of assessment tools. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates a virtual reality (VR)-integrated eye-tracking system for characterizing oculomotor function in PD. We aimed to comprehensively assess oculomotor performance in PD patients compared to healthy controls (HC), investigate its relationship with clinical measures of disease severity, and develop a diagnostic model based on multi-paradigm eye movemen

SIGNIFICANCE: Oculomotor tests in concussion commonly show impairment in smooth pursuit and saccadic function. Honing in on the systems likely to be affected by concussion will streamline use of oculomotor function as a supplemental diagnostic and prognostic tool, as well as improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of concussion.
PURPOSE: This study investigates oculomotor function between concussed and healthy collegiate athletes and determines measurement test-retest reliability of those tools.
METHODS: Eighty-seven healthy athletes were recruited from a U.S. Division 1 sports univ

We studied eye movements and clinical findings in 1225 patients with complaints of dizziness. Downbeat nystagmus was demonstrated in 11 patients during eye closure. Simultaneous vertical and horizontal eye recordings were examined to demonstrate vertical eye position during eye closure. Downbeat nystagmus appeared on midline position even during eye closure in six patients. An electrooculography was demonstrated in three out of above six patients. A 24-year-old woman (Case 1) complained of a single spell of vertigo. There was no remarkable finding on neurological examination. An audiogram was

PURPOSE: Although impaired color vision and ERG changes have been detected in carriers of blue-cone monochromatism (BCM), no eye movement abnormalities have been identified. Quantitative eye movements of three obligate carriers of BCM were analyzed.
METHODS: Horizontal and vertical eye movements of three obligate carriers of two families with BCM with visual acuity of 20/20 or better were recorded using the magnetic search coil technique. Subjects were examined fixing in primary and eccentric gaze and during horizontal and vertical smooth pursuit at 20 degrees, 40 degrees, and 80 degrees per

Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is a reflexive eye movement in response to movement of the viewer's visual environment that consists of a slow phase eye movement in the direction of the stimulus followed by a quick phase in the opposite direction. When tested at the bedside, the slow phases represent smooth pursuit, while the quick phases represent saccades. Normally, OKN is conjugate and symmetric (horizontally and vertically). Abnormalities in the optokinetic response can provide diagnostic and localising value. We describe six clinical scenarios where OKN testing is most useful for the practisi

Eye movement dysfunctions (EMDs), detectable during smooth pursuit, occur in a majority of schizophrenics and in 45% of their first-degree relatives. Previous data suggest that they represent a biologic marker for schizophrenia. To determine the mode of transmission of the schizophrenia-EMD complex, the eye movements of offspring of monozygotic and dizygotic twins were recorded. One group of twins was discordant for schizophrenia; the other group for manic depression or reactive psychosis. The data suggest that EMDs and at least some schizophrenias can be considered expressions of a single und

We measured perceived motion smear when retinal image motion was created either by a physically moving object or by movement of the eyes or head. Consistent with previous reports, the extent of perceived motion smear during an eye or head movement is less than that produced by physical object motion when the eyes are stationary. Moreover, perceived smear is substantially smaller when the motion of the retinal image is in the same direction as the eye or head movement compared to when image motion is in the opposite direction. These results imply that extra-retinal signals associated with eye a

Eye movement investigations are performed in several fields of medicine. We have developed signal analysis methods of eye movements studied in otoneurology for several years. Previously, we have designed methods for eye movement types of saccades, nystagmus, smooth pursuit, and vestibulo-ocular reflex. In this paper we extend and develop further our method to concern also impulse-like eye movements, i.e. a new type of eye movement tests for investigations of vertiginous patients. According to our preliminary results the use of our method is efficient to differentiate patients with inner ear di

The paper deals with 5 adults carriers of this syndrome diagnosed by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Neither the conventional radiography nor the plain computerized tomography showed indicative clues of the deformity. However electronystagmography prove in all cases a vertical down beating nystagmus. In one instance the nystagmus become rotatory at lateral glance. In all cases appeared an altered smooth pursuit and a lack of suppression fixation of the vestibular nystagmus. The AA. emphasize the diagnostic value of the electronystagmography (which tracings could spare several other,

To test the hypothesis that the premotor cortex in and behind the caudal bank of the arcuate sulcus can generate saccades, we stimulated electrically the periarcuate region of alert rhesus monkeys. We were able to produce saccades from sites of the premotor cortex that were contiguous with the frontal eye fields and extended up to 2 mm behind the smooth pursuit area. However, premotor sites often elicited saccades with ipsiversive characteristic vectors, lower peak velocities, and flatter velocity profiles when compared to saccades evoked from the frontal eye field.

Twenty-one elderly patients with dizziness underwent a comprehensive medical and otoneurological evaluation. The majority had vertigo, limited mobility and restricted neck movements. Poor visual acuity, postural hypotension and presbyacusis were also frequent findings. Electronystagmography revealed positional nystagmus in 12, disordered smooth pursuit in 18, and abnormal caloric responses in nine. Magnetic resonance imaging showed ischaemic changes in six out of eight patients. Although dizziness in the elderly is clearly multifactorial, the suggested importance of vertebrobasilar ischaemia w

A 36-year-old woman had intermittent downbeat nystagmus. Between episodes of downbeat nystagmus, eye movements were normal, except for stationary positional nystagmus and decreased vestibulo-ocular responses (VOR) to rotation. Smooth pursuit, optokinetic nystagmus, and visual-VOR interactions, which are usually impaired in patients with downbeat nystagmus and cerebellar dysfunction, were normal. Computed tomography and findings during a suboccipital craniotomy demonstrated a mild Chiari malformation, type 1. Episodic downbeat nystagmus that is not associated with other ocular motor abnormaliti

BACKGROUND: Oculomotor function is a sensitive marker of neurological impairment, and smooth pursuit deficits have been reported across multiple neurological disorders. However, the oculomotor deficits following traumatic brain injury (TBI) remain incompletely characterized, particularly in relation to current functional status during rehabilitation.
METHODS: In this study, we employed a bedside, head-free eye-tracking paradigm based on short, repeated linear tracking segments, to assess oculomotor dysfunction in 30 TBI patients undergoing inpatient rehabilitation and 30 age-matched controls.

Background and Objectives: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a progressive, autosomal recessive, rare neuromuscular disorder caused by a genetic defect in the SMN1 gene, where the SMN2 gene cannot sufficiently compensate. Patients experience progressive and predominantly proximal muscular weakness and atrophy. Oculomotor disorders are currently not regarded as a typical feature of SMA. The aim of this study was to determine whether oculomotor abnormalities are present in subjects with SMA and to assess a potential relationship between the oculomotor parameters and disease duration.
