Extensive mesenteric vein and portal vein thrombosis successfully treated by thrombolysis and anticoagulation.

In response to the new round of COVID-19 outbreaks since March 2022, universities with high outbreak rates around the country have taken quarantine measures to contain the epidemic. Evidence from previous coronavirus outbreaks has shown that people under quarantine are at risk for mental health disorders. To better understand the impacts of this round of COVID-19 quarantine on domestic college students and their responses, we conducted a systematic survey to assess the stress and anxiety, and to evaluate effective measurements in this population. We searched relevant documents and literature, …

Border Control for Infectious Respiratory Disease Pandemics: A Modelling Study for H1N1 and Four Strains of SARS-CoV-2.

Post-pandemic economic recovery relies on border control for safe cross-border movement. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, we investigate whether effective strategies generalize across diseases and variants. For four SARS-CoV-2 variants and influenza A-H1N1, we simulated 21 strategy families of varying test types and frequencies, quantifying expected transmission risk, relative to no control, by strategy family and quarantine length. We also determined minimum quarantine lengths to suppress relative risk below given thresholds. SARS-CoV-2 variants showed similar relative risk across strategy fa…

Effectiveness of different border control strategies for reducing mpox importation risk: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The Clade Ib monkeypox virus can be more transmissible through non-sexual routes compared to the previous Clade IIb strain. With … pre-departure, on-arrival, and both tests, respectively. Replacing the on-arrival test with a 7-day quarantine and post-quarantine testing would lower the proportion to 21.8% (20.9%-22.6%). Quarantine-only strategies showed a linear increase in effectiveness against duration, reaching a 90.4% (89.8%-91.0%) reduction with a 28-day quarantine. INTERPRETATION: …

Haplotype networks of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the Diamond Princess cruise ship outbreak.

The Diamond Princess cruise ship was put under quarantine offshore Yokohama, Japan, after a passenger who disembarked in Hong Kong was confirmed as a coronavirus disease 2019 case. We performed whole-genome sequencing of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) directly from PCR+ clinical specimens and conducted a phylogenetic analysis of the outbreak. All tested isolates exhibited a transversion at G11083T, suggesting that SARS-CoV-2 dissemination on the Diamond Princess originated from a single introduction event before the quarantine started. Although further spreading m…

Performance of hospital-based contact tracing for COVID-19 during Australia's second wave.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-based contact tracing aims to limit spread of COVID-19 within healthcare facilities. In large outbreaks, this can stretch resources and workforce due to quarantine of uninfected staff. We analysed the performance of a manual contact tracing system for healthcare workers (HCW) at a multi-site healthcare facility in Melbourne, Australia, from June-September 2020, during an epidemic of COVID-19. METHODS: All HCW close contacts were quarantined for 14 days, and tested around day 11, if not already diagnosed with COVID-19. We examined the prevalence and timing of symptoms in c…

Risk assessment and cost-effectiveness of animal health certification methods for livestock export in Somalia.

Livestock export is vital to the Somali economy. To protect Somali livestock exports from costly import bans used to control the international spread of disease, better certification of livestock health status is required. We performed quantitative risk assessment and cost-effectiveness analysis on different health certification protocols for Somali livestock exports for six transboundary diseases. Examining stock at regional markets alone without port inspection and quarantine was inexpensive but was ineffective for all but contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, contagious caprine pleuropneumonia…

Lessons from managing a campus mumps outbreak using test, trace, and isolate efforts.

In 2017, Penn State University's campus experienced a mumps outbreak that coincided with unrelated restrictions on social gatherings. University Health Services implemented testing, contact tracing, and quarantine and isolation protocols. Approximately half of the supplied contact tracing information was usable, ∼70% of identified contacts were reached, and <50% of those contacted complied with quarantine protocol. Students with confirmed mumps reported ∼7.4 (1-35) contacts on average. Findings from this outbreak can inform future outbreak management on college campuses, including COVID-19, by…

Research on Tropical Medicine and Germ Theory in Colonial Hong Kong: Focusing on Malaria and Plague Prevention.

At the end of the nineteenth century, Hong Kong was in the midst of a malaria and plague epidemic which caused a fierce dispute within the medical community over disease theories and quarantine practices. However, the Hong Kong colonial authorities and medical community did not immediately accept the theory of etiology based on germ theory. Although germ theory was becoming scientifically established through research on plague and malaria in the 1890s, the Hong Kong colonial authorities and medical community did not immediately accept it. Patrick Manson (1844-1922) began studying tropical medi…

Vicarious Acquisition of Learned Helplessness During the COVID-19 Campus Epidemics in China: Interactions Between Embodied and Mediated Experiences.

Numerous universities nationwide announced urgent implementation of closed campus management due to the epidemics of COVID-19 in Chinese universities since March 2022, and a large number of students were under quarantine. This study aims to explore how embodied experiences (i.e., centralized quarantine and self-quarantine) and mediated experiences (i.e., exposure to media sources, pandemic information overload, and online help seeking) influence the acquisition of learned helplessness during the campus epidemics among the Chinese university students, besides, how do these two types of experien…

A descriptive study of the psychological experience of health care workers in close contact with a person with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has the potential to affect the mental health of health care workers (HCWs). It is known that HCWs who serve as front-liners during the COVID-19 pandemic experience stress and have the fear of contracting the infection. Little is known of how being a positive contact affects HCWs. OBJECTIVE: We examined the experience of HCWs who were quarantined following a close unprotected contact with a COVID-19 positive colleague and explore the psychological impact especially as the timing of the quarantine coincided with the Eid (annual Muslim festival) celebration in Malaysia. ME…

Disseminated zygomycosis in a cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis).

Here we describe a case of zygomycosis in a 4-y-old male cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) newly received into our facility. Results of physical exam, clinical chemistry analysis, hematology, and tuberculin skin testing and routine thoracic radiographs performed during the quarantine period are reported. Routine chest radiographs taken during the quarantine period revealed enlargement of the cranial mediastinum. During quarantine, the macaque developed severe respiratory distress and was euthanized. Microscopic examination of tissue collected at the postmortem exam revealed nonseptated, …

Cross-lagged relationship between anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance among college students during and after collective isolation.

OBJECT: Repeated quarantine policies over the past 3 years have led to poor psychological consequences for the public. Previous studies have proved that the quarantine policy leaves individuals vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and insomnia, especially among college students. This study aims to explore whether psychological problems during isolation continue with the release of isolation. METHODS: Overall, 2,787 college students both answered a web-based survey during and after the closure management was lifted. The Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and Youth …
