Our Health Counts: Examining associations between colonialism and ever being incarcerated among First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people in London, Thunder Bay, and Toronto, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: Indigenous peoples have a disproportionately high prevalence of incarceration in the Canadian justice system. However, there is limited Indigenous-driven research examining colonialism and the justice system, specifically associations between racism, externally imposed family disruptions, and history of ever being incarcerated. Therefore, this study examined the association between the proportion of previous incarceration and family disruption, experiences of racism, and victimization for Indigenous adults in London, Thunder Bay, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The three communities …

Racial residential segregation, neighborhood disorder, and racial discrimination among black pregnant women.

OBJECTIVE: To compare and contrast pregnant, Black women's voices with quantitative measures of racial residential segregation, neighborhood disorder, and racial discrimination. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: Using a convergent design for the parent study, surveys and qualitative interviews were completed by Black pregnant women (n = 27). MEASURES: Content analysis was conducted and data were analyzed to assess for congruency or divergence for each concept related to structural racism (racial residential segregation, neighborhood disorder, and discrimination). RESULTS: No single concept had 100% agreem…

Weight stigma is uniquely tied to maladaptive eating across different racial, ethnic, and gender groups.

Weight stigma, racism, and sexism (social devaluation due to body weight, race or ethnicity, and sex or gender), have been linked to increased maladaptive eating behaviors; however, no research has investigated the unique associations between different forms of stigma and eating concurrently. We analyzed within-group (by race/ethnicity and sex) effects of different forms of stigma on maladaptive eating behaviors to test whether there is some unique relationship between weight stigma and maladaptive eating across identities. Additionally, we explored differences by racial/ethnic group and sex, …

The Promise of Community Health Workers for Addressing Structural Drivers of Inequities Among Hospitalized Patients.

Community health workers, trained health professionals from the community they serve, hold promise in their ability to combat structural racism affecting Black patients in the hospital. Structural racism leads to downstream, adverse effects on patient care, including lack of trustworthiness of health care institutions, impaired communication, and limited access to adequate pain control. To address these challenges, we launched a Health Advocate program integrating a community health worker into our hospital's medicine wards. The program sought to improve communication, patient experience, and …

The ethical imperative to pursue neonatal health equity and justice.

There are significant racial and ethnic inequities in neonatal care. These inequities are the result of the multiple levels of racism: structural, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized racism. Recently, there has been significantly increased attention to measuring and addressing inequities for minoritized infants and their families. One way to support these strategies is to clarify the bioethical justification for allocating clinical, research and educational resources to address inequity. In this narrative review, we describe two bioethical frameworks-the four pillars and the ethics …

When thriving requires effortful surviving: Delineating manifestations and resource expenditure outcomes of microaggressions for Black employees.

Although overt racism is condemned by many organizations, insidious forms of racism persist. Drawing on the conservation of resources framework (Hobfoll, 1989), this article identifies forms and outcomes of racial microaggressions-daily verbal, behavioral, and environmental indignities that denigrate individuals from racially minoritized groups (Sue, Capodilupo, et al., 2007). Leveraging survey data from 345 Black employees, open-ended question qualitative insights delineate three overarching themes of workplace microaggression toward Black employees: anti-Black stereotype expression, racializ…

Examining FGC Survivor and FGC Impacted Community Involvement Behind FGM/C Legislation in the United States: A Response to Bader's "From the War on Terror to the Moral Crusade Against Female Genital Mutilation: Anti-Muslim Racism and Femonationalism in the United States".

As an American-born woman who grew up as a South Asian Dawoodi Bohra Muslim, I have been aware of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) my entire life. So I immediately agreed to give commentary on "From the War on Terror to the Moral Crusade Against Female Genital Mutilation: Anti-Muslim Racism and Femonationalisim in the United States" by Dina Bader. While I do not necessarily disagree with Bader's observations, I provide additional context to better understand the history of our current FGM/C laws in this country and the influence survivors and advocates' have had in shaping them.

The Future of Public Health Must be Radical: Incorporating Racial Capitalism.

Racism impedes the health of communities of color and, more recently, has been declared a public health crisis. Social uprisings in response to the police brutalities in the summer of 2020 have further pushed public health as a discipline to recognize racism as a public health issue. We argue that, as a discipline, we must challenge ourselves to move toward radical public health to achieve health equity. Radical public health requires future and current public health practitioners to discuss the root of health inequities, which we identify as racial capitalism. We (a) discuss racial capitalism…

Addressing Racial and Ethnic Inequities in Opioid Overdose Mortality: Strategies for Equitable Interventions and Structural Change.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review synthetizes findings reflecting the increasing racial and ethnic inequities in opioid overdose mortality and emphasizes the necessity for tailored interventions as well as other policy-level and structural strategies to stem this trend. RECENT FINDINGS: Factors contributing to inequities in overdose mortality include changes in drug supply, persistent social-structural vulnerabilities stemming from structural racism, and inequities in access to medication for opioid use disorder and harm reduction services. Key strategies to address these inequities include the …

Building an Infectious Disease Diversity, Equity, and Antiracism (ID2EA) Curriculum: A Single Center's Experience and Reflections.

In response to longstanding healthcare inequities unmasked by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic, the infectious diseases (ID) section at the Yale School of Medicine designed and implemented a pilot curriculum integrating Infectious Disease Diversity, Equity, and Antiracism (ID2EA) into ID educational training and measured program outcomes. We herein describe a mixed-methods assessment of section members on whether the ID2EA curriculum affected their beliefs and behaviors regarding racism and healthcare inequities. Participants rated the curriculum as useful (92% averaging across sessions) …

Untangling Discrimination: The Impact of Internalizing Oppression on HIV Treatment Engagement Among Young Black Sexual Minority Men in the Southern US.

Black sexual minority men living with HIV (BSMM+) in the Southern United States encounter multiple forms of discrimination, which are associated with decreased HIV care engagement. We analyzed data from 166 BSMM + in the South to assess direct associations between experiences of racism, heterosexism, and HIV-related discrimination with HIV care engagement. We further investigated indirect associations through three mediators: internalized racism, internalized heterosexism, and internalized HIV stigma. Experienced heterosexism was indirectly associated with HIV care engagement through internali…

Stigma as a facilitator of the 2022 mpox outbreak.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims at exploring how stigma played a role in the naming of mpox, its classification, and how anti-LGBT+ bias and systemic racism all played roles in facilitating the outbreak. RECENT FINDINGS: The naming of mpox is in flux with recent efforts to change back to monkeypox in the United States, which could exacerbate stigma and discrimination. Anti-LGBT+ bias affected access to mpox testing, treatment, and prevention, but mpox also served as a facilitator of homophobic rhetoric. Systemic racism and colonialism both affect the global response to mpox and could furt…

Non-Indigenous Canadians' and Americans' moral expectations of Indigenous peoples in light of the negative impacts of the Indian Residential Schools.

The historical trauma associated with the Indian Residential School (IRS) system was recently brought to the awareness of the Canadian public. Two studies investigated how the salience of this collective victimization impacted non-Indigenous Canadians' expectations that Indigenous peoples ought to derive psychological benefits (e.g., learned to appreciate life) and be morally obligated to help others. Study 1 found that modern racism was related to perceptions that Indigenous peoples psychologically benefitted from the IRS experience, which in turn, predicted greater expectations of moral obli…

Calling Attention to the Role of Race-Driven Societal Determinants of Health on Aggressive Tumor Biology: A Focus on Black Americans.

Blacks have the highest incidence and mortality from most cancers. The reasons for these disparities remain unclear. Blacks are exposed to adverse social determinants because of historic and contemporary racist polices; however, how these determinants affect the disparities that Blacks experience is understudied. As a result of discriminatory community policies, like redlining, Blacks have higher exposure to air pollution and neighborhood deprivation. Studies investigating how these factors affect tumor biology are emerging. We highlight the literature that connects racism-related community ex…

The influence of multiple oppressions on women of color's experiences with insidious trauma.

In this study, we examined the relations between multiple forms of oppressive experiences (i.e., racism, sexism, and sexual objectification) and trauma symptoms among Women of Color (WOC). In addition, self-esteem was explored as a partial mediating variable in these links, and ethnic identity strength was proposed to buffer the negative relationship between multiple forms of oppression and self-esteem, and the positive relationship between oppressive experiences and trauma symptoms. Results suggested that self-esteem partially mediated the positive relationship between racist experiences and …

The racial trauma task force: Clinical-community psychology approaches to healing racial trauma during COVID-19.

Due to an increase in media and news attention on anti-Black racism in 2020, the APA declared racism a pandemic as the CDC highlighted the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the work described in the current manuscript took place during what is referred to as a double pandemic for Black people in the United States. This paper discusses the impact of this period on a department and its students, the training students advocated for in response to the urgent need for more support for Black communities, and the approaches they used to address racial stress and trauma during this un…

Experiences of Racial Discrimination: Qualitative Findings from Injured New Zealand Migrants.

Racism is a recognised determinant of health internationally and in New Zealand (NZ). Racism is instantiated through racial discrimination, including discriminatory attitudes and practices. Associations between racial discrimination and unfavourable health-related experiences and outcomes have been reported for specific groups in NZ, including for Māori (the Indigenous people of NZ) and for those of Asian and Pacific ethnicities. However, less appears to be known about NZ migrants’ (those defined as non-NZ born) experiences of racial discrimination. This paper reports injured NZ migrants’ expe…

Race matters in addressing homelessness: A scoping review and call for critical research.

Structural racism contributes to homelessness in the United States, as evidenced by the stark racial disparities in who experiences it. This paper reviews research at the intersections of race and homelessness to advance efforts to understand and address racial inequities. Part 1 offers a synthesis of homelessness research from the 1980s to 2015, where several scholars examined the role of race and racism despite mainstream efforts to present the issue as race-neutral. Part 2 presents the results of a systematic scoping review of research at the intersections of race and homelessness from 2016…
