Radiation exposure of adrenal vein sampling: a German Multicenter Study.

OBJECTIVE: Adrenal vein sampling (AVS) represents the current diagnostic standard for subtype differentiation in primary aldosteronism (PA). However, AVS has its drawbacks. It is invasive, expensive, requires an experienced interventional radiologist and comes with radiation exposure. However, exact radiation exposure of patients undergoing AVS has never been examined. DESIGN AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed radiation exposure of 656 AVS performed between 1999 and 2017 at four university hospitals. The primary outcomes were dose area product (DAP) and fluoroscopy time (FT). Consecutiv…

Staying Safe from Radiation Exposure in Cath Lab: A Review.

A successful cardiac catheterization Laboratory radiation safety program must manage patient and staff safety by reducing exposure to ionizing radiation to a level that is as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA). The first step in radiation safety is to avoid unnecessary use of ionizing radiation by justification of exposure, one of the basic principles of radiation protection. All individuals involved in fluoroscopic imaging procedures should familiarize themselves to the measures to protect themselves from exposure to unsafe doses of ionizing radiation.

Reducing Radiation Exposure in Cardiac Catheterizations for Congenital Heart Disease.

Ionizing radiation exposure is a necessary risk entailed during congenital cardiac catheterizations. The congenital catheterization lab at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital employed quality improvement strategies to minimize radiation exposure in this vulnerable population. In two phases, we implemented six interventions, which included adding and utilizing lower fluoroscopy and digital angiography (DA) doses, increasing staff and physician radiation awareness, focusing on tighter collimation, and changing the default fluoroscopy and DA doses to lower settings. Post-intervention data were col…

Occupational exposure to natural UV radiation and premature skin ageing.

The skin is the part of the human body most vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The spectrum of the negative effects of UV radiation on the skin ranges from acute erythema to carcinogenesis. Between these extreme conditions, there are other common skin lesions, e.g., photoageing. The aim of this study was to assess the skin for signs of photoageing in a group of 52 men occupationally exposed to natural UV radiation. There were 2 types of examinations: an examination of skin condition (moisture, elasticity, sebum, porosity, smoothness, discolourations and wrinkles) with a device for diagn

Cumulative radiation exposure in pediatric patients with congenital heart disease.

Certain pediatric patients undergoing surgery for the most severe forms of congenital heart disease are exposed to high doses of ionizing radiation. The amount of cumulative radiation exposure from all modalities has not yet been evaluated. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the cumulative radiation exposure in a contemporary cohort of patients with congenital heart disease undergoing single-ventricle palliation. This is a single-center, retrospective study of pediatric patients undergoing Fontan completion between May 2005 and May 2010. Radiation exposure from all procedures including c…

Radiation exposure from diagnostic imaging among patients with gastrointestinal disorders.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: There are concerns about levels of radiation exposure among patients who undergo diagnostic imaging for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), compared with other gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. We quantified imaging studies and estimated the cumulative effective dose (CED) of radiation received by patients with organic and functional GI disorders. We also identified factors and diagnoses associated with high CEDs. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2590 patients who were diagnosed with GI disorders at a tertiary gastroenterology center from January 1999-January 2009 on the basis o…

Cellular adaptive response to chronic radiation exposure in interventional cardiologists.

Aims Invasive cardiologists are the most exposed to ionizing radiation among health professionals and show an increased rate of somatic DNA damage. To evaluate the effects of chronic low-dose exposure to ionizing radiation on redox state and apoptotic activation. Methods and results We enrolled 10 healthy exposed professionals (all interventional cardiologists, Group II, exposed: age = 38 ± 5 years) and 10 age- and gender-matched unexposed controls (Group I, non-exposed). Exposed subjects had a median exposure of 4 mSv/year (range 1-8) by film badge dosimetry (below lead apron). We measured re

Population exposure to ionizing radiation from medical examinations in France.

This study was carried out to update data concerning both the nature and the frequency of X-ray diagnostic procedures and to reassess the associated per caput effective dose in France, given that the only nationwide survey was carried out over 15 years ago. Relevant data concerning examinations in conventional radiology, computed tomography, interventional radiology and nuclear medicine were obtained for the year 2002 from two main sources: the main health insurance records for private practices and the statistics of healthcare establishments on hospital activity. Doses associated with differe

Cardiac surgery after mediastinal radiation: extent of exposure influences outcome.

OBJECTIVES: Mediastinal radiation for thoracic malignancies uses multiple treatment fields and doses. We investigated whether more extensive radiation exposure is associated with more hospital complications and worse survival after cardiac surgery. METHODS: From January 2000 to January 2005, 230 patients underwent cardiac surgery after 3 levels of mediastinal radiation: extensive (Hodgkin disease, thymoma, and testicular cancer; n = 70), variable (eg, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and lung cancer; n = 35); and tangential (breast cancer; n = 125). Hospital complications were recorded prospectively, and…

Cancer risks following diagnostic and therapeutic radiation exposure in children.

The growing use of interventional and fluoroscopic imaging in children represents a tremendous benefit for the diagnosis and treatment of benign conditions. Along with the increasing use and complexity of these procedures comes concern about the cancer risk associated with ionizing radiation exposure to children. Children are considerably more sensitive to the carcinogenic effects of ionizing radiation than adults, and children have a longer life expectancy in which to express risk. Numerous epidemiologic cohort studies of childhood exposure to radiation for treatment of benign diseases have d…

Inactivation of cyanobacterial nitrogenase after exposure to ultraviolet-B radiation.

Exposure of the N(2)-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena BT2 to ultraviolet-B radiation (2.5 W m(-2)) for 30 min resulted in complete loss of nitrogenase activity but 100% cell killing occurred only after a 90-min exposure. Inactivation of nitrogenase activity was not specific to Anabaena BT2; other species also showed a similar effect. The time required for 100% killing and inactivation of nitrogenase activity differed in various species, and this difference may be ascribed to the presence of different levels of UV-B protection mechanisms in individual species. Inhibition of nitrogenase activity w

Childhood and adult cancer after intrauterine exposure to ionizing radiation.

Since the reports in 1956 and 1958 that in utero radiation was associated with an increased risk of leukemia and solid cancers during childhood, this issue has been debated. Many epidemiological studies have been performed. Evidence for a causal association derives almost entirely from case-control studies, whereas practically all cohort studies find no association, most notably the series of atomic bomb survivors exposed in utero. Although it is likely that in utero radiation presents a leukemogenic risk to the fetus, the magnitude of the risk remains uncertain. The causal nature of the risk

[Disorders developing under combined exposure to ionizing radiation and stress].

The combined influence of gamma-radiation in a dose of 1 Gy and restriction stress was studied in experiments on 62 rats. The severity of gastric mucosal erosive and ulcerative lesions, the rate of lipid peroxidation, and hepatic homogenate heat generation were determined by microcalorimetry. The developing disorders were corrected by administering sodium succinate. Animal radiation resulted in modified stress-induced gastric mucosal lesions which appeared as increases in the total number of ulcerations. The use of sodium succinate was followed by less severity of erosive and ulcerative gastri

Modification of nucleolar protein B23 after exposure to ionizing radiation.

The responses of cells to ionizing radiation include induction and/or suppression of the expression of genes and proteins. In our investigations of alterations in cellular protein expression in response to ionizing radiation, we have used the techniques of two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and silver staining. We compared the nuclear protein profiles of control and irradiated (6 Gy, 4 h postirradiation) radioresistant squamous carcinoma cells (SQ-20B) and observed an alteration in the expression of a 40 kDa protein: control nuclei express a protein isoform with pI values betwe
