Inducible nitric oxide synthase activity by interferon-gamma-producing cells in human radicular cysts.

AIM: In this study, the interaction of interferon-gamma-(IFN-gamma) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)-producing cells in human radicular cysts were investigated. METHODOLOGY: Inflamed periapical tissues were obtained from patients at the time of endodontic surgical treatments and were cut into two pieces. After fixing with acetone or 4% paraformaldehyde in phosphate-buffered saline, 5-m-thick paraffin and cryostat sections were prepared. The paraffin sections of the inflamed tissues were evaluated histologically with haematoxylineosin stains. The specimens diagnosed as radicular cyst…

Distribution of factor XIIIa-containing cells and collagenous components in radicular cysts: histochemic and immunohistochemic studies.

The distribution of subunit A of Factor XIII (FXIIIa) and of collagenous components was investigated by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method for FXIIIa and by the Sirius red F3BA method, respectively, in 43 cases of radicular cysts. Besides the covering epithelial layer, the radicular cyst wall was composed of the following three layers: an inner granulomatous layer, an outer fibrous connective tissue layer, and an intermediate layer. In each layer, a positive reaction for FXIIIa was observed in certain connective tissue cells. These FXIIIa-containing cells were few in number in t…

Effects of the patient's age and the size of the primary lesion on the speed of shrinkage after marsupialisation of keratocystic odontogenic tumours, dentigerous cysts, and radicular cysts.

Marsupialisation, by which a surgical window is created in the cavity of a cystic lesion, has been recommended to avoid the formation of a bony defect in the jaw and a reduction in a patient's quality of life. However, information about the factors that affect the reduction in the size of a cyst after marsupialisation is limited. We have studied the effects of the patient's age and the size of the primary lesion on the speed of shrinkage after marsupialisation of keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOTs), dentigerous cysts, and radicular cysts. The speed of shrinkage (mm(2)/month) was evaluated…

Different Approaches to the Treatment of Radicular and Related Cysts Associated with Nasal Mucosa in the Maxilla: A Case Series.

Radicular cysts (RCs) represent the most frequent inflammatory cystic lesions of the jaw, typically arising from non-vital teeth. While standard management via enucleation is well-documented, complex cases involving the anterior maxilla present significant surgical challenges due to their proximity to the nasal cavity floor (NCF) and the maxillary sinus floor (MSF). This report provides a comprehensive revision of a clinical case series involving seven patients (ages 17-50) treated with multimodal surgical and regenerative protocols. The patients were stratified into five distinct anatomical r…

Management of Impacted Premolar With Root Dilaceration Caused by Radicular Cyst in Deciduous Molar: A Case Report.

Radicular cyst is the most common inflammatory odontogenic cyst in the oral cavity, but it rarely occurs in deciduous teeth. Radicular cysts in deciduous teeth can lead to root dilaceration in permanent successor teeth, resulting in impacted permanent teeth. We presented an 11-year-old boy who underwent decompression and drainage of a radicular cyst in deciduous tooth, followed by early orthodontic traction of permanent successor tooth with root dilaceration. The cyst healed successfully, and the impacted premolar was gradually aligned into the dental arch with favorable root development This …

Decompression and Enucleation of a Mandibular Radicular Cyst, Followed by Bone Regeneration and Implant-Supported Dental Restoration.

Odontogenic cysts are usually treated by enucleation (cystectomy). Limited cysts (less than 5 cm) are usually managed by primary excision (t … p vitality and periodontal integrity of the adjacent teeth. We are reporting a case of a mandibular radicular cyst that was treated by decompression, followed by enucleation, bone reconstruction, and restoration with two osseointegrated dental implants. The cystic cavity progressively decreased in volume and increased in bone density.

Management of radicular cysts using platelet-rich fibrin and bioactive glass: a report of two cases.

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) created by Choukroun's protocol concentrates most platelets and leukocytes from a blood harvest into a single autologous fibrin biomaterial. However, no current data is available concerning the use of PRF for the treatment of periapical lesions. Two cases of radicular cysts were reported using an interdisciplinary approach, including regular endodontic therapy followed by surgical management with PRF and bioactive glass. Two cases of radicular cysts presented as an incidental radiographic finding, appearing as an apical radiolucency with well-circumscribed sclerotic …

Squamous odontogenic tumor-like proliferations in radicular cysts: a clinicopathologic study of forty-two cases.

INTRODUCTION: Squamous odontogenic tumor-like epithelial islands occurring in the walls of odontogenic cysts are histologically identical to the squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT). Microscopically, the squamous odontogenic tumor-like proliferations (SOTLPs) share certain histologic features with SOT, acanthomatous and desmoplastic ameloblastoma, and well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Little is known about the rarely reported SOTLPs occurring in radicular cysts. The purpose of this study was to define the clinical and histopathologic spectrum of SOTLP in radicular cysts and to investiga…

Runx2 expression is associated with pathologic new bone formation around radicular cysts: an immunohistochemical demonstration.

BACKGROUND: Radicular cysts are the most common cysts in human jaw bones. These lesions induce bone remodeling of the surrounding alveolar bones, which was termed 'condensing osteitis', and was suggested to be related to cells of the osteoblastic lineage. The Runx2 (core-binding protein [cbfa]1/polyoma enhancer-binding protein [pebp]2alphaA) was shown to be a DNA-binding transcriptional molecule expressed in osteoprogenitor cells. METHODS: We confirmed the specificity of anti-Runx2 antiserum, using Western blotting analysis. We investigated the expression and localization of Runx2 in 32 radic…

[Investigation of immunoglobulin presence and localisation in epithelial lining of radicular cyst walls by ABC immunoperoxidase technique].

Immunoglobulin classes A, G and M in the epithelial lining of radicular cysts are analysed by a new method: ABC immunoperoxidase technique. The obtained results show a high degree of all immunoglobulin classes present in the cyst walls, as well as in the epithelial lining. The findings suggest the important role of immunoglobulin in the processes occurring in the radicular cyst walls.

A Radicular Cyst With Extensive Bone Loss Requires Surgical and Endodontic Management: Case Presentation and Literature Review.

The radicular cyst is an inflammatory pathology affecting the periapical bone tissue associated with teeth exhibiting pulp necrosis. Without timely endodontic intervention, this pathology can lead to significant bone tissue destruction due to its growth pattern, necessitating both endodontic and surgical approaches to halt its progression and remove the involved tissue. This case study details the management of a 23-year-old patient with a history of prior trauma, presenting with pressure in the anterior maxillary region. Tomographic examination revealed a hypodense area involving Teeth 2.1, 2…

Molecular pathogenicity of 1-nonadecene and L-lactic acid, unique metabolites in radicular cysts and periapical granulomas.

Recently, 1-nonadecene and L-lactic acid were identified as unique metabolites in radicular cysts and periapical granuloma, respectively. However, the biological roles of these metabolites were unknown. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the inflammatory and mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET) effects of 1-nonadecene, and the inflammatory and collagen precipitation effects of L-lactic acid on both periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PdLFs) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). PdLFs and PBMCs were treated with 1-nonadecene and L-lactic acid. Cytokines' expression was measured using…
