Environmental implications of phosphate-based fertilizer industrial waste and its management practices.

During the green revolution in the mid-twentieth century, the consumption of inorganic phosphorous and phosphate-based fertilizers (P-fertilizers) in the developing world skyrocketed, resulting in a proliferation of P-fertilizer industries. Phosphate-based fertilizer industries are ranked among the most environment-polluting industries. The worldwide phosphorus market, which was 68.5 million metric tons in 2020, is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.5% to 81 million metric tons by 2027. The release of untreated hazardous pollutants from these fertilizer industrie

ENHANCED RADIOACTIVE CONTENT OF 'BALANCE' BRACELETS.

During a routine whole body counting measurement of a worker at the Nuclear Research Center Negev, abnormal activities of (232)Th and (238)U were measured. After a thorough investigation, it was found that the radioactivity was due to a rubber bracelet ('balance bracelet') worn by the worker during the measurement. The bracelet was counted directly by an high pure germanium gamma spectrometry system, and the specific activities determined were 10.80 ± 1.37 Bq g(-1) for (232)Th and 5.68 ± 0.88 Bq g(-1) for natural uranium. These values are obviously high compared with normally occurring radioac

[Biochemical mechanisms of radiogenic cytogenetic and somatic disorders in children residing in regions polluted by radionuclides].

Children and adults affected by the Chernobyl accident suffer with lipoperoxic stress coupled with hypovitaminoses A and E, the syndrome and its radiogenic mechanisms described by the authors previously. The relation of these biochemical disturbances to somatic consequences on mutagenic and teratogenic levels caused by chronic low-dose irradiation of children into radiopolluted regions has been investigated. Either the rational approaches to prevent or/and to treat all pathologies indicated were tested. The radionuclide polluted regions had 1-5, 5-15 and 15-40 Ci/km2 by 137Cs. Unprotected newb

Influence of various factors on individual radiation exposure from the Chernobyl disaster.

BACKGROUND: The explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was one of the greatest known nuclear disasters of the 20th century. To reduce individual exposure to ionizing radiation the Soviet Union government introduced a number of counter-measures. This article presents a description of how historical events conspired to disrupt these efforts and affect residents in exposed areas. METHODS: This study employed an extensive review of data on radionuclide deposition, contamination patterns and lifestyle characteristics. Data were obtained from the Ukraine Ministry of Health and the Ukraine R

Radioiodine: biokinetics, mean dose and dose distribution.

For the radioiodine isotopes I-123, I-125, I-131, and I-132 the mean tissue dose and local dose distribution in the epithelial cells of a follicle have been calculated and compared to each other. Moreover, dose factors have been estimated for I-131 as a function of age considering age-dependent ingestion (milk consumption) and inhalation rates. Thereby, besides age-dependent biological half-times and thyroid masses, the thyroidal iodine uptake was assumed to be independent from age and taken to be about 1.7 the normal for an insufficient dietary iodine intake as in the Federal Republic of Germ

Primordial radionuclides and rare earth elements in the sediments of Sundarban mangrove estuary (Bangladesh): sources and risk assessment.

This study evaluates sediments from the mangrove estuary to examine the premise that geogenic and fluvial dynamics act as the dominant controls on elemental (primordial radionuclides and REEs) partitioning, with secondary regulation by the trivial influence of anthropogenic activities. A total of 31 benthic sediments were collected across the upstream to downstream transect and analysed using ICP-MS. Activity concentrations (Bq kg-1) of 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th were calculated based on elemental abundance of Th, U, and K, respectively, and multivariate statistical approaches were applied to ident

Migration mechanisms of Cs, U(VI), and Th(IV) in granite-filled fractures under competitive sorption conditions: A kinetic analysis integrating transport and desorption dynamics.

Accurate prediction of co-transport of multiple radionuclides within geological barriers remains a core challenge in the long-term safety assessment of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) repositories. This study investigates the co-transport of three representative nuclides-Cs, U(VI), and Th(IV)-through granite-filled single fracture, integrating breakthrough experiments with sequential desorption tests to establish a kinetic framework for their transport-desorption process. A three-site nonequilibrium kinetic model was applied to inversely simulate breakthrough curves, yielding quantitative r

Contamination profile and potential human health risks of radon in groundwater of southwest region of Punjab, India.

Radon (Rn) is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the decay of uranium-bearing minerals in rocks and soils. Long-term exposure to elevated radon levels in drinking water is associated with an increased risk of stomach and lung cancers. This study aims to assess the concentration of radon in groundwater and evaluate its potential health risks in six cancer-affected districts, i.e., Bathinda, Mansa, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Fazilka, and Sri Muktsar Sahib, of southwest Punjab, India. A total of 186 samples were collected from deep and shallow borewells using a 10 × 10 km2 grid-based sam

Cesium removal from contaminated montmorillonite using ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and Freezing-Thawing process.

The unexpected nuclear accidents and uncontrolled leakages of radioactive cesium (137Cs) can contaminate the soils nearby nuclear power plants (NPPs). Radioactive 137Cs ions (Cs+) tend to strongly sorb on 2:1 phyllosilicate clay minerals, especially expandable clay minerals such as montmorillonite (MMT) and vermiculite. However, removal of 137Cs from the contaminated soils has been relatively inefficient due to the strong and irreversible interaction of Cs with the frayed edge sites in clays. This study employs the intercalation of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGME) and the Freezing-Thawin

Novel metal-organic framework hydrogel for enhanced selective removal of uranyl ions from nuclear wastewater.

The efficient removal of uranium (U(Ⅵ)) from nuclear wastewater presents a significant challenge due to the high concentrations of uranium and various interfering ions. In this study, we developed and used metal-organic framework hydrogel (MOFH) as a highly efficient adsorbent for uranium removal. The MOFH, synthesized with ferrocyanides and functional groups (Fe(Ⅱ)-CN-Fe(Ⅲ), OH, -COOH, and -NH2), exhibited good chemical stability, large separation capacity, and high selectivity. The hydrogel's three-dimensional network, crosslinked with chitosan and alginic acid, significantly enhanced uraniu

Characterisation of Xe-133 background at the IMS stations in the East Asian region: Insights based on known sources and atmospheric transport modelling.

Radioxenon can be produced with a high fission yield during a nuclear explosion, making it an important tracer to demonstrate the nuclear origin of an explosion. For this reason, it is continuously monitored by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) as part of the verification regime. Radioxenon is emitted by civil nuclear facilities, like nuclear power plants (NPPs) or isotope production facilities (IPFs), providing significant but variable contribution to the noble gas background. The discrimination between CTBT-relevant radioxenon detections and the background is the

Synthesis of studies on significant atmospheric electrical effects of major nuclear accidents in Chernobyl and Fukushima.

Radioactive materials released during the two most serious nuclear accidents in history, at Chernobyl and Fukushima, caused exceptionally significant contamination and perturbations of the environment. Among them, this paper focuses on the effects related to the atmospheric electricity (AE). Measurements of the most significant disturbances in the values of various AE parameters recorded near ground level are reviewed and the corresponding results are jointly evaluated. The Chernobyl and Fukushima events caused changes in the AE parameters both after long-distance transport (Chernobyl) and sho

Identification of airborne radioactive spatial patterns in Europe - Feasibility study using Beryllium-7.

The present study proposes a methodology to identify spatial patterns in airborne radioactive particles in Europe. The methodology is based on transforming the activity concentrations in the set of stations for each month (monthly index), due to the tightly spaced sampling intervals (daily to monthly), in combination with hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering approaches, due to the lack of a priori knowledge of the number of clusters to be created. Three different hierarchical cluster methodologies are explored to set the optimal number of clusters necessary to initialize the non-hierar

The accumulation of radioactive contaminants in drinking water distribution systems.

The accumulation of trace contaminants in drinking water distribution system sediment and scales has been documented, raising concerns that the subsequent release of the contaminants back to the water is a potential human exposure pathway. Radioactive contaminants are of concern because of their known health effects and because of their persistence within associated distribution system materials. The objective of this work was to measure the amount of a number of radioactive contaminants (radium, thorium, and uranium isotopes, and gross alpha and beta activity) in distribution solids collected

Natural radiation monitoring and control treatment in the Hantepe beach.

This work has been carried out to monitor and decrease the natural radiation exposure at the Hantepe beach (Çanakkale, Turkey). A 0.25- to 0.30-m-thick layer of sand was scraped, removed and deposited in a safe place in order to decrease people's exposure to radiation and to relieve relevant radiophobia. The original mean value of dose rate on the beach was 1.38 μGy h(-1) at the contact and 1.0 μGy h(-1) at 1 m above the ground. After the scraping process, the mean value of dose rate decreased to 0.98 μGy h(-1) at the contact and to 0.78 μGy h(-1) at 1 m above the ground. One year later, these

Radiation: facts, fallacies and phobias.

There is frequent debate in the media and the scientific published reports about the use of radiation for diagnosis and treatment, the benefits and risks of the nuclear industry, uranium mining and the storage of radioactive wastes. Driving this debate is increasing concern about reliance on fossil fuels for power generation for which alternatives are required. Unfortunately, there is generally a poor understanding of the relevant basic sciences compounded by widespread irrational fear of irradiation (radiation phobia). Radioactivity, with special reference to uranium and plutonium is simply d

Mortality among plutonium and other radiation workers at a plutonium weapons facility.

Mortality among 5,413 white males who were employed for at least two years at a plutonium weapons facility was investigated to measure risks from exposures to low levels of plutonium and external radiation. When compared with US death rates, fewer deaths than expected were found for all causes of death, all cancers, and lung cancer. No bone cancer was observed. An excess of brain tumors was found for the cohort in general. Elevated rate ratios for all causes of death and all lymphopoietic neoplasms were found when employees with plutonium body burdens greater than or equal to 2 nCi were compar
