Microbiological Investigation and Clinical Efficacy of Professional Topical Fluoride Application on Streptococcus mutans and Selemonas sputigena in Orthodontic Patients: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

Fluoride prophylaxis is a cornerstone in preventing dental caries, a disease for which orthodontic patients are at high risk due to the reduced effectiveness of home oral hygiene and increased plaque accumulation. Recent evidence defines caries as polymicrobial, involving Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacilli, and emerging species such as Selenomonas sputigena. This prospective, randomized, controlled study evaluated professional topical fluoride in the form of gel and varnish in 68 patients aged 8-17 years wearing fixed orthodontic appliances. Participants were divided into three equal groups: t

The effect of combination therapy with intravitreal bevacizumab and topical timolol-dorzolamide eye drops on diabetic macular edema: a double-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The mainstay of treatment in diabetic macular edema (DME) is intravitreal administration of anti-vascular endothelial growth factors (anti-VEGFs). Aqueous depressants may enhance the effects of anti-VEGF agents by prolonging their clearance via aqueous outflow. PURPOSE: To compare the anatomical and functional outcomes of treatment with intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) and topical timolol-dorzolamide versus IVB alone. METHOD: In this randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial, patients with center-involving DME (ci-DME) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/30 or less wer

Research Techniques Made Simple: Randomized Controlled Trials for Topical Drugs in Dermatology: When and How Should We Use a Within-Person Design?

Topical drugs are often used as first-line treatment for dermatological conditions. Depending on the disease and the drug, three main designs can be used for randomized controlled trials assessing topical drugs: the classical individual parallel design, the cluster randomized design, and designs allowing within-individual comparisons, including the cross-over design (in which patients are randomized to a sequence of interventions) and the within-person design (also called the split-body design). Within-person design can be used to compare different drugs concomitantly in the same patient. Rand
