Progressive hyperopia development in the long-term period after radial keratotomy (RC) is associated with not only surgical effects, but also individual biomechanical features of the fibrous tunic of the eye, its age-related changes, and hydrodynamic disturbances. When choosing a method of correction, one should take into account a number of features characteristic of this induced refractive disorder: instability and irregularity of refraction, coexisting presbyopia, and, in some cases, anisometropia. Correction of progressive hyperopia after RC can be achieved with eyeglasses, or contacts, or

As an ophthalmologist, it is very important to know whether limited vision is caused by refractive problems or whether there is another pathology behind it. That's why refraction plays a key role at the beginning of every eye examination. Therefore, it is important to know the basic principles of optics. When fitting spherical and cylindrical lenses, it is interesting to know which properties the respective lenses have. One should also be aware of the optical paths and refraction laws when fitting spectacle lenses and prisms. In addition, when prescribing spectacle lenses, one should consider

PURPOSE: To establish the optical performance of currently available Alvarez variable-power spectacles in relation to their possible utility for ametropes and presbyopes.
METHODS: Two commercial designs of variable-power (variable-focus) spectacles were studied: FocusSpecs and Adlens Adjustables. Using focimetry, power and prism at three different power settings were measured across the aperture of the lenses of each design and local optical quality was explored in more detail using interferometry.
RESULTS: In general, equivalent-sphere powers at all lens settings were adequately stable acro

This paper reports a study of postoperative refraction and eikonometry of 50 patients who had unilateral cataract extraction with implantation of a pupil-supported intraocular lens. The mean postoperative aniseikonia (+/- SD) was 1.97 (+/- 1.82). A statistically significant relationship was shown between anisometropia and aniseikonia. Despite aniseikonia of up to 7.8 per cent there were no diplopia problems as the visual system exhibits a high degree of tolerance. It is concluded that aniseikonia can be controlled to within clinically acceptable limits by the simple calculation of intraocular

PURPOSE: Associations between age at menarche and myopia have been observed in studies that included older women. Furthermore, pregnancy-related hormone surges in young women are associated with short-term changes in refractive error, although the long-term effects are less known. This study explored associations of age at menarche and parity with refractive error and ocular biometry in young women, and the relationship between age at menarche and refractive error in middle-aged adults for comparison.
METHODS: Community-based young women underwent eye examinations at 20 and 28 years old. Info

The global prevalence of myopia has increased significantly in recent decades, and it is anticipated that half the population of the world will be myopic by 2050. The dramatic increase in myopia cannot be explained solely by genetic factors; hence, environmental factors such as near work may play an important role in myopia development. Near work activities involve accommodation, convergence, and pupil constriction, which lead to various mechanical changes that alter the structural and optical properties of the anterior eye. Mechanical changes associated with near work activities include cilia

Emmetropization is affected by the temporal parameters of visual stimulation and the spectral composition of light, as well as by autonomic innervation. The goal of the current experiments is to test the hypothesis that different types of visual stimulation interact with ocular innervation in the process of emmetropization. For that, selective lesions of the autonomic nervous system were performed in chickens: involving transection of parasympathetic input to the eye from either the ciliary ganglion, innervating accommodation and pupil responses (CGX; n = 32), or pterygopalatine ganglion, inne

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: That myopic defocus, even if restricted to the peripheral retina, inhibits eye growth in young monkey eyes has motivated the therapy of myopia control through multifocal contact lens wear in children.
BACKGROUND: To understand how eye-length regulating mechanisms are triggered by light requires knowledge of retinal light spread. That is largely lacking for the multifocal contact lenses used in the therapy because empirical methods identifying just the defocus in dioptres are inadequate.
METHODS: "Through-focus" diffraction computations in contact lens/eye models with typi

SIGNIFICANCE: Face-form tilt spectacles are sometimes tilted such that the optical properties of the embedded prescription lenses and the lens power change. If the lens power is not plano, the vision quality of the wearer may be affected.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to measure the whole-surface power distributions of tilted spectacle lenses for different lens powers and tilt angles.
METHODS: Spherical spectacle lenses with a refractive index of 1.56 and powers of -4.00 D, -2.00 D, plano, +2.00 D, and +4.00 D were measured. Their whole-surface power distributions were measured at different tilt

OBJECTIVES: Advances in dental operative microscopes (DOMs) enable examination of root canal morphology or detection of root fractures otherwise not visible to the naked eye. However, dental therapy involving prolonged use of DOMs requires precision within a limited visual field, resulting in eye strain among users. This study examined the effects of halogen and light-emitting diode (LED) light sources on asthenopia and visual function following use of DOMs.
METHODS: The study used halogen and LED light sources in DOMs. The first experiment was conducted on 6 participants with corrected visua

The optical properties of the ocular lens are important to overall vision quality. As a transparent biological tissue, the lens contributes to the overall and dynamic focussing power of the eye, and corrects for optical errors introduced by the cornea. The optical properties of the lens change throughout life. Alterations to the refractive properties and transparency of the lens result in presbyopia and cataract, respectively. However, it is not well understood how changes to lens cellular structure and function initiate these changes in refraction and transparency. Here, we attempt to bridge

BACKGROUND: Uncorrected refractive error affects approximately 19 million children globally, resulting in preventable vision loss. However, cycloplegic refraction, the gold standard for assessment, remains largely inaccessible in low-resource settings. We aimed to develop and validate machine learning (ML) prediction models based on non-cycloplegic results to estimate the cycloplegic spherical equivalent (cSE).
METHODS: The internal dataset comprised refractive measurements and ocular biometric parameters collected from 3035 children's eyes at the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University, the r

PURPOSE: To establish a set of assays that allow the in vivo screening of candidate genes for ocular diseases in zebrafish, with an emphasis on refractive error.
METHODS: Our pipeline includes the most relevant ocular screening measurements to assess (1) ocular biometry using spectral domain optical coherence tomography, (2) refractive status using an eccentric photorefractor, (3) intraocular pressure by tonometry, and (4) optokinetic response to study visual capability in zebrafish. To validate our pipeline and to demonstrate the potential of zebrafish as a valid animal model, we chose two w
