INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal overuse injuries are a serious problem in the military, particularly in basic combat training, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost because of limited duty days, medical treatment, and high rates of reinjury. Injury risk models have been developed using peripheral computed tomography (pQCT)-based injury correlates. However, pQCT image capture on large number of recruits is not practical for military settings. Thus, this article presents a method to derive spatial density pQCT images from much lower resolution but more accessible dual-energy X-ray abso

UNLABELLED: Fifth metatarsal fractures, otherwise known as "Jones" fractures, occur commonly in athletes and nonathletes alike. While recent occurrence in the popular elite athlete has increased public knowledge and interest in the fracture, this injury is common at all levels of sport. This review will focus on all three types of Jones fractures. The current standard for treatment is operative intervention with intramedullary screw fixation. Athletes typically report an acute episode of lateral foot pain, described as an ache. Radiographic imaging with multiple views of the weightbearing inju

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains are highly prevalent with high risk of recurrence. Consequently, there are a significant number of research reports examining strategies for treating and preventing acute and recurrent sprains (otherwise known as chronic ankle instability (CAI)), with a coinciding proliferation of review articles summarising these reports.
OBJECTIVE: To provide a systematic overview of the systematic reviews evaluating treatment strategies for acute ankle sprain and CAI.
DESIGN: Overview of intervention systematic reviews.
PARTICIPANTS: Individuals with acute ankle sprain/CAI.

Shoulder injuries, including acromioclavicular (AC) joint separations, remain a common reason for presentation to the emergency room. Although the diagnosis can be made apparent through proper history and physical examination by the emergency medicine physician, ascertaining the degree of injury can be difficult on the basis of clinical evaluation alone. While there is consensus in the literature that low-grade AC joint injuries can be treated with conservative management, high-grade injuries will generally require surgical intervention. Furthermore, the treatment of grade 3 injuries remains c

Drug-induced esophagitis is being recognized increasingly in the past few years. Since 1970 more than 650 cases have been reported worldwide caused by 30 or more medications. We have reviewed these cases with a view to classifying this disease based on underlying pathological mechanism. Drug-induced esophageal injury tends to occur at the anatomical site of narrowing, with the middle third behind the left atrium predominating (75.6%). The disease is broadly classified into two groups. The first group being transient and self-limiting as exemplified by the tetracycline group induced injury (65.

Ankle orthoses are commonly used for protection against initial ankle sprain injuries and for protection against reinjury. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of the DonJoy Ankle Ligament Protector (ALP) and the Aircast Sport-Stirrup (AS) on the functional performance tasks of a 40-meter sprint, a figure-of-eight run, and standing vertical jump. Subjects were 14 males and nine females who reported a history of two or more lateral ankle sprains of the same ankle and no sprains of the contralateral ankle. Each subject performed all functional tasks on the first test day with bot

UNLABELLED: This scoping review aimed to bring together evidence from muscular architecture, biomechanics, training physiology and injury history-fields that have been examined individually in the past-to clarify how intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence hamstring strain injury development. A systematic literature search of three databases was undertaken in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews. Peer-reviewed studies covering the mechanisms of hamstring strain injuries were reviewed and 32 articles met the eligibility criteria and methodological quality assessment. Mult

In the United States, rates of fatal and nonfatal firearm injuries differ substantially by race and sex, with Black men being more likely than any other group to be shot. Many people who survive a gunshot wound have complex physical, psychological, and social challenges during their recovery. Public health programs, including hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs), have been designed to reduce the likelihood of reinjury for their participants and to support their well-being. However, little is known about how Black men who survive a gunshot wound and receive care from these prog

BACKGROUND: The capacity of functional testing to identify 'at-risk' landing strategies in return to sport evaluation has been questioned. The purpose was to evaluate if biomechanical and muscle activation patterns differ during a drop landing task in subjects post anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction against uninjured controls.
METHODS: 22 subjects within two years of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction who had returned to sport and 25 activity matched controls were recruited. Sagittal plane knee and hip biomechanics and muscle activation amplitudes were recorded during a single l

Piezo2 transmembrane excitatory mechanosensitive ion channels were identified as the principal mechanotransduction channels for proprioception. Recently, it was postulated that Piezo2 channels could be acutely microdamaged on an autologous basis at proprioceptive Type Ia terminals in a cognitive demand-induced acute stress response time window when unaccustomed or strenuous eccentric contractions are executed. One consequence of this proposed transient Piezo2 microinjury could be a VGLUT1/Ia synaptic disconnection on motoneurons, as we can learn from platinum-analogue chemotherapy. A secondary

OBJECTIVES: Muscle injury often occurs in sports activity. To avoid reinjury, it is important to determine the appropriate period until return to play after injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate characteristics of the healing process for gastrocnemius muscle injury by B-mode imaging, power Doppler (PD) imaging, and shear wave elastography (SWE).
METHODS: Twenty patients with acute calf musculotendinous injury were enrolled. Scar thickness on B-mode imaging, new vessels according to PD grades, and SWE values in the muscle, musculotendinous junction, and tendon of the medial head of

The athlete with a failed instability procedure requires a thoughtful and systematic approach to achieve a good outcome. Goals of treatment should be defined and realistic expectations should be set. Revision stabilization has a high rate of recurrent instability, low rates of return to play, and low clinical outcome scores. Fundamental to successful revision surgery is choosing the correct procedure. The decision is straightforward in athletes with clear factors that predict recurrence (significant glenoid bone loss, engaging Hill-Sachs lesions) because only a bony procedure can restore the a

The fear avoidance model (FAM) postulates that fear of pain or reinjury is a risk factor for persistent pain and disability, because it leads to the avoidance of physical activity. Research on the FAM has not yielded consistent results, which may be attributed to the model itself, but could also be a product of the way fear of movement is assessed. Studies of the FAM have measured fear using verbal scales consisting of items that are often vague and have only an indirect relationship with fear. This study reports on the development of a Pictorial Fear of Activity Scale-Cervical (PFActS-C). The

Disturbance of the patellofemoral mechanism is the most common cause of dysfunction in the knee, especially in athletes of all age groups. This is primarily a congenital familial abnormality due to poor development in the vastus medialis. The patella develops in the line of maximum pull of this muscle group; in this congenital condition it develops in line with the stronger antagonist to the vastus medialis, the vastus lateralis muscle. Therefore, the position in the extremity that the patella assumes is the result of abnormal muscle development. This brings about other changes in the lower ex
