Effect of meditation training on aspects of coronary-prone behavior.

52 undergraduates who had volunteered to receive meditation training were placed into either high or low time-urgency groups based on their scores on Factor S of the Jenkins Activity Survey. Subjects then either received training in Clinically Standardized Meditation followed by 3 1/2-wk. of practice or waited for training during that period. Analyses of scores on a time-estimation task and of self-reported hostility during an enforced waiting task indicated that meditation significantly altered subjects' perceptions of the passage of time and reduced impatience and hostility resulting from en

[Diastolic dysfunction of left ventricle in psoriatic patients with concomitant opisthorchiasis before and after antihelminthic therapy].

The aim of the study was to evaluate left ventricular diastolic function in psoriatic patients with chronic opisthrochosis (CO) before and after antihelminthic therapy. It included 75 patients with psoriasis and CO, 50 with psoriasis alone, 50 with CO, and 20 healthy subjects. All patients underwent standard echocardiographic examination in the M-, B-, and Doppler mode. The study revealed impaired active relaxation of the left ventricle manifest as increased isovolumic relaxation time more pronounced in patients with concurrent CO and psoriasis than in those with psoriasis alone. Antihelminthi

Arctigenin exhibits relaxation effect on bronchus by affecting transmembrane flow of calcium.

Arctigenin, a lignan extract from Arctium lappa (L.), exhibits anti-inflammation, antioxidation, vasodilator effects, etc. However, the effects of arctigenin on bronchus relaxation are not well investigated. This study aimed to investigate how arctigenin regulates bronchus tone and calcium ion (Ca(2+)) flow. Trachea strips of guinea pigs were prepared for testing the relaxation effect of arctigenin to acetylcholine, histamine, KCl, and CaCl2, respectively. Furthermore, L-type calcium channel currents were detected by patch-clamp, and intracellular Ca(2+) concentration was detected by confocal

Mexiletine inhibits nonadrenergic noncholinergic lower oesophageal sphincter relaxation in rabbits.

Nonadrenergic noncholinergic (NANC) nerves are known to be nitrergic and to have an important role in the regulation of gastrointestinal motility and function. Cardiac antiarrhythmic therapy in humans is accompanied by a high incidence of gastrointestinal side-effects. We investigated the effect of mexiletine, a class Ib antiarrhythmic drug, on NANC lower oesophageal sphincter relaxation. Mexiletine concentration dependently inhibited the NANC relaxation induced by 30 mM KCl (EC(50)=4.4 x 10(-6) M); the production of 3',5'-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) after KCl stimulation was concent

Relaxivity-iron calibration in hepatic iron overload: probing underlying biophysical mechanisms using a Monte Carlo model.

Iron overload is a serious condition for patients with β-thalassemia, transfusion-dependent sickle cell anemia, and inherited disorders of iron metabolism. MRI is becoming increasingly important in noninvasive quantification of tissue iron, overcoming the drawbacks of traditional techniques (liver biopsy). Effective transverse relaxation rate (1/effective transverse relaxation time) rises linearly with iron while transverse relaxation rate (1/T2) has a curvilinear relationship in human liver. Although recent work has demonstrated clinically valid estimates of human liver iron, the calibration

The application of virtual reality exposure versus relaxation training in music performance anxiety: a randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Performance anxiety is the most frequently reported anxiety disorder among professional musicians. Typical symptoms are - on a physical level - the consequences of an increase in sympathetic tone with cardiac stress, such as acceleration of heartbeat, increase in blood pressure, increased respiratory rate and tremor up to nausea or flush reactions. These symptoms can cause emotional distress, a reduced musical and artistical performance up to an impaired functioning. While anxiety disorders are preferably treated using cognitive-behavioral therapy with exposure, this approach is ra

Non-Pharmacological Treatment for Primary Headaches Prevention and Lifestyle Changes in a Low-Income Community of Brazil: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Primary headaches can be reduced by lifestyle changes, such as stress management and physical activity. However, access to programs focused on behavioral interventions is limited in underserved, poor communities. OBJECTIVES: We performed a randomized open-label clinical trial to test the therapeutic and behavioral effects of aerobic exercise, relaxation, or the combination of both, in individuals with primary headaches of a small, low-income community of the Brazilian Amazon. METHODS: Participants were screened from the riverine/rural population, and individuals with primary head

Psychological treatment of recurrent headache in children and adolescents--a meta-analysis.

Psychologically based interventions such as relaxation training, biofeedback and cognitive-behavioural therapy are increasingly discussed as options for the treatment of migraine and tension-type headache in children and adolescents. In order to determine the state of evidence regarding the efficacy of these treatments, a meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies was conducted. In a comprehensive literature search including data from 1966 to 2004, 23 studies were found meeting the inclusion criteria. Due to the application of the random effects model, generalization of the results is poss

Automated treatment for flight phobia: a 3 1/2 year follow-up.

The authors contacted 43 patients who had been given audiovisual treatment for flight phobia 3 1/2--5 1/2 years previously. Of the 26 subjects who had flown successfully by the end of treatment, 23 had maintained their ability to fly at follow-up. Eighteen said their attitude toward flying was more positive since treatment, and 21 rated their comfort level while flying as "much better" or "better"; however, only 3 said they were "cured." Eleven patients said the treatment had helped to alleviate other fears or anxieties.

Effect of septal ablation on myocardial relaxation and left atrial pressure in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy an invasive hemodynamic study.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine the effects of septal ablation on diastolic function with the use of invasive hemodynamics. BACKGROUND: Septal ablation is an alternative therapy for patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). However, its beneficial effect on diastolic function, by relieving the systolic contraction load, may be countered by adverse effects from the infarction on left ventricular mechanics. METHODS: Using high-fidelity, micromanometer-tipped catheters, we examined 40 HCM patients by taking direct measurements of the left ventricular ou

Individualized pelvic physical therapy for the treatment of post-prostatectomy stress urinary incontinence and pelvic pain.

BACKGROUND: The rehabilitation of post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence has traditionally focused on pelvic floor strengthening exercise. The goal of this study was to determine whether an individualized pelvic physical therapy (PT) program aimed at normalizing both underactive and overactive pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) can result in improvement in post-prostatectomy stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic pain. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 136 patients with post-prostatectomy SUI and treated with pelvic PT. Patients were identified as having either underactive, overacti

Biomechanical changes in the pharynx and upper esophageal sphincter after modified balloon dilatation in brainstem stroke patients with dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the biomechanical changes in the upper esophageal sphincter (UES) and pharyngeal function after successful dilatation therapy for dysphagia. Using high-resolution manometry (HRM), we examined the biomechanical properties of swallowing in brainstem stroke patients with dysphagia following modified balloon dilation therapy. METHODS: 30 brainstem stroke patients with dysphagia were included. Patients in the experimental group received 3 weeks of modified balloon dilatation treatment and regular dysphagia therapy. Patients in the control group received 3

Management of Barrett's Esophagus in the Context of Achalasia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Achalasia is characterized by impaired lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxation, while Barrett's esophagus (BE) is typically associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) which can occur with excess LES relaxation. This article will provide an overview of the diagnostic challenges, surveillance strategies, and management approaches in the coexistence of these two conditions. RECENT FINDINGS: Data on outcomes and management of concurrent BE and achalasia are limited. Most commonly, GERD and subsequent BE may occur after therapies for achalasia directed at increas
