Distinct Fastigial Output Channels and Their Impact on Temporal Lobe Seizures.

Despite being canonically considered a motor control structure, the cerebellum is increasingly recognized for important roles in processes b … e fastigial outputs. We examined fastigial neurons projecting to the superior colliculus, medullary reticular formation, and central lateral nucleus of the thalamus, and found that these comprise largely nonoverlapping populations of neurons that send collaterals to unique sets of additional, somewhat overlapping, thalamic and brainstem regions. We found that neither …

Acetylcholine facilitation, atropine block of synaptic excitation of cortical neurons.

Sinigle neurons in cat visual cortex were driven by afferent stimuli to determine the effects of drugs liberated from multibarreled micropipettes on synaptic transmission. Acetylcholine increased, and atropine decreased, the number of neuron discharges fired in response to stimulation of the mesencephalic reticular formation without necessarily affecting responses to other stimuli or affecting spontaneous firing.

Central distribution of vestibular afferents that innervate the anterior or lateral semicircular canal in the mongolian gerbil.

The central distribution of afferents that innervate the crista ampullaris of the anterior or lateral semicircular canals was determined in … cleus cuneatus. The anterior canal had sparse innervation in the paratrigeminal and gigantocellular reticular formation. This study has shown many similarities in the central distribution of fibers that innervate the anterior and lateral canals and a few areas of segregated input. Projections outside the vestibular nuclei are more extensive than previously determined …

Neurotoxic N-methyl-D-aspartate lesion of the ventral midbrain and mesopontine junction alters sleep-wake organization.

The dorsal regions of the midbrain and pons have been found to participate in sleep regulation. However, the physiological role of the ventral brainstem in sleep regulation remains unclear. We used N-methyl-D-aspartate-induced lesions of the ventral midbrain and pons to address this question. Unlike dorsal mesencephalic reticular formation lesions, which produce somnolence and electroencephalogram synchronization, we found that ventral midbrain lesions produce insomnia and hyperactivity. Marked increases in waking and decreases in slow wave sleep stage 1 (S1), stage 2 (S2) and rapid eye moveme…

Ischaemic pontomedullary transection with incomplete locked-in syndrome. A case report with MRI.

We describe a case of incomplete locked-in syndrome (LIS) due to basilar artery thrombosis, in which MRI showed a complete, sharply demarcated infarct at the pontomedullary junction. This supports experimental data showing that the lower reticular formation is not critical for the maintenance of consciousness. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of ischaemic pontomedullary transection with LIS.

Prominent somnolence and cerebellar syndrome in subclavian artery thrombosis--a case report.

A patient suffering from acute left subclavian artery thrombosis presented with an unusual syndrome of prominent somnolence, right cerebellar signs, and left upper extremity ischemia. Clinical, angiologic, and electrophysiologic studies confirmed a brain stem and reticular formation dysfunction due to vertebrobasilar ischemia. Urgent thromboembolectomy led to neurologic improvement and satisfactory revascularization of the involved upper limb.

Select spinal lesions reveal multiple ascending pathways in the rat conveying input from the male genitalia.

The specific white matter location of all the spinal pathways conveying penile input to the rostral medulla is not known. Our previous studies using rats demonstrated the loss of low but not high threshold penile inputs to medullary reticular formation (MRF) neurons after acute and chronic dorsal column (DC) lesions of the T8 spinal cord and loss of all penile inputs after lesioning the dorsal three-fifths of the cord. In the present study, select T8 lesions were made and terminal electrophysiological recordings were performed 45-60 days later in a limited portion of the nucleus reticularis gi…

Labeled cells were scattered throughout the four nuclei of the VNC, as well as in PrH, the reticular formation (RF) and the external cuneate nucleus. We used double-label immunofluorescence to visualize the distribution of these cells relative to other neurochemically defined subdivisions. NPNFP cells were excluded from the CR and CB regions of the MVe. In P …

Nuclear organization and morphology of serotonergic neurons in the brain of the Nile crocodile, Crocodylus niloticus.

The present study describes the location and nuclear organization of the serotonergic system in a representative of the order Crocodylia, the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus). We found evidence for serotonergic neurons in three regions of the brain, including the diencephalon, rostral and caudal brainstem, as previously reported in several other species of reptile. Within the diencephalon we found neurons in the periventricular organ of the hypothalamus, but not in the infundibular recess as noted in some other reptilian species. In addition we found serotonergic neurons in the pretectal

Brainstem myoclonus in a patient with non-dopa-responsive parkinsonism.

In the few reports where electrophysiologic techniques have been used to characterise stimulus-sensitive myoclonus in the setting of a parkinsonian syndrome, the origin of the myoclonus has usually been found to be cortical. We describe a patient with parkinsonism unresponsive to levodopa who had myoclonus that was both spontaneous and induced by somatosensory stimuli. In addition, autonomic symptoms and a marked sleep disturbance were present early in his illness. Results of electrophysiologic investigations including electromyography (EMG) studies, routine electroencephalography (EEG) record

Pontine lesions in idiopathic narcolepsy.

Three patients had longstanding (37 to 50 years), highly disabling narcolepsy, poorly controlled by treatment. The clinical histories were t … ns. The nature of the lesions remains uncertain but their location corresponded to the pontine oral reticular formation, where the neuronal network generating REM sleep is located. This is the first report of MR signal abnormalities in patients with idiopathic narcolepsy and suggests a causal relationship between the disease and the central pontine lesions.

Myotonic dystrophy with alveolar hypoventilation and hypersomnia: a clinicopathological study.

We present a case of myotonic dystrophy accompanied by alveolar hypoventilation and hypersomnia. Case history, pulmonary function tests, pol … ine raphe, particularly in dorsal raphe nucleus and superior central nucleus. Pontine and medullary reticular formation also showed a marked cell loss and fibrillary gliosis. The alveolar hypoventilation and the hypersomnia in our case may be attributed to these morphological abnormalities, and would appear to be central in nature.

Peripheral nervous system in the larynx. An anatomical study of the motor, sensory and autonomic nerve fibers.

The laryngeal peripheral nervous system is presented on the basis of our results in the cat, following 10 years of investigation using mainly tracer techniques. The present paper focused on the localization of each laryngeal motoneuron, the myotopical arrangements of motoneurons innervating the pharyngeal and esophageal striated muscles within the nucleus ambiguus in the motor nerve supply, and also on the location of neurons, the distribution and density of nerve fibers, the area and laterality of the innervation, and the pathway to the larynx in the sensory and sympathetic nerve supplies. [The effect of brain-stem vasomotor centers on the neurogenic control of cerebrovascular tonus--Part 3. The effects of destruction and stimulation of the brain-stem on intracranial pressure in acute subarachnoid hemorrhage].

The purpose of the present study is to clarify the effects of destruction and stimulation of the brain-stem on intracranial pressure (ICP) in experimentally induced subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Using 23 cats, blood pressure (BP), ICP and local cerebral blood volume (CBV) were continuously measured. Acute SAH was produced by injection of autogenous blood (3 to 7 ml) into the cisterna magna. The animals were divided into two groups. Group A: those in which hypothalamic dorsomedial nucleus (DM) and reticular formation of the midbrain (MBRF) were coagulated bilaterally one hour after SAH and Gro…

Familial lethal sleep apnea.

Three of six siblings presented with sleep apnea between 18 and 26 months of age. Twin females and a male had normal growth and development without antecedent neurologic or apparent metabolic disorder. The females presented at 25 and 27 months respectively with irregular respiration and episodes of apnea. Twin A succumbed to an apneic episode while sleeping. Central sleep apnea was diagnosed in twin B at the Stanford Sleep Clinic. She died following an apneic episode three months after evaluation. The male presented at 18 months with fatal sleep apnea. A fourth child was evaluated for sleep ap

Primate raphe- and reticulospinal neurons: effects of stimulation in periaqueductal gray or VPLc thalamic nucleus.

Recordings were made from 132 raphe- and reticulospinal tract neurons in the medial part of the lower brain stem in 32 anesthetized monkeys. Recording sites were in the nucleus raphe magnus, the rostral nucleus raphe obscurus, and the reticular formation adjacent to the raphe. The neurons were identified by antidromic activation from the upper lumbar spinal cord. Of the population sampled, 83 cells were activated antidromically from the left dorsal lateral funiculus (DLF), 32 from the right DLF, and 17 from both sides. The mean latency for antidromic activation was 8.2 +/- 7.1 ms, correspondin…

Electrophysiological characteristics of lumbar spinal cord neurons backfired from lateral reticular nucleus in the rat.

Spinal neurons antidromically activated from either the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN) or immediately adjacent areas were identified in the rat lumbar spinal cord. In agreement with previous anatomical work (60), these neurons were widely distributed in both the dorsal and ventral horns of the spinal cord and could be subdivided into three main groups according to their location: a) deep ventromedial (DVM) cells, which project more substantially to the LRN than to other supraspinal targets; b) cells of the median portion of the neck of the dorsal horn (mNDH), which project exclusively to the

Analysis of characteristic eye movement abnormalities in internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Quantitative electro-oculographic recording techniques were used to analyze four characteristic eye movement abnormalities in 21 patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO). The frequency of each of the abnormalities was determined to suggest a pattern that is the most sensitive in detecting the syndrome of INO. Slowing of the adducting saccade was the most frequently found abnormality, being present in all patients. The other characteristic eye movement disorders were found less frequently: dissociated nystagmus at 30 degrees of eccentric gaze, dysmetria of the abducting eye, and limitat

[Monosynaptic excitation of motor neurons of the nucleus of the accessory nerve by reticulofugal impulses].

Responses of accessory motoneurons to electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral nucleus gigantocellularis of medullary reticular formation were recorded intracellularly in cats under chloraloze-nembutal anesthesia. The stimulation evoked in the accessory motoneurons monosynaptic EPSPs with latency from 0.6 to 1.0 ms, maximal amplitude 4.0 mV and duration 10 ms. Weak facilitation of EPSPs and absence of action potentials were demonstrated using paired shocks and rhythmic stimulation of the nucleus.
