Upper airway obstruction and craniofacial morphology.

Otolaryngologists are being asked with increasing frequency to assess adequacy of the upper airway and to treat upper airway obstructive pro … rtical face height. Such increases in anterior lower vertical face height are often associated with retrognathia and open bites. Low tongue posture seen with oral respiration impedes the lateral expansion and anterior development of the maxilla. Otolaryngologists have the ability to objectively and accurately assess upper airway patency. Rhinometric assessment …

[Profile-altering interventions as preventive measures (author's transl)].

Operations to improve the profile in abnormal positions of the mandible serve as preventive measures on the one hand for improving and harmonizing the external shape of the face and for improving the function of chewing on the other, with consequent prevention of premature loss of teeth, periodontosis and complaints of the temporomandibular joint, and preventing the appearance of digestive diseases. The different bite and mandibular abnormalities are discussed in groups classified according to their operability.

Nonsurgical treatment of severe vertical maxillary excess with short roots, thin bone, and a low maxillary sinus floor.

Severe vertical maxillary excess (VME) is a skeletal abnormality that typically requires orthognathic surgery for correction. Nonsurgical orthodontic treatment has been a fascinating but challenging alternative, especially when adverse anatomic factors hamper or pose risks for intrusive tooth movement. Despite well-documented efficiency of temporary anchorage device (TAD)-aided nonsurgical treatment for VME, evidence is scarce regarding the treatment efficacy and safety for cases with adverse anatomic traits. In this case report, we present nonsurgical treatment of a patient with severe VME, m

Craniofacial changes from 13 to 62 years of age.

BACKGROUND: In long-term studies of orthodontic, orthognathic, and prosthodontic treatments, control subjects are needed for comparison. OBJECTIVES: To study the craniofacial (skeletal, soft tissue, and dental) changes that occur in untreated subjects with normal occlusion between 13 and 62 years of age. MATERIALS/METHODS: Thirty subjects with a Class I normal occlusion and harmonious facial profile were studied. X-ray examinations were performed at 13 (T1), 16 (T2), 31 (T3), and 62 (T4) years of age, and data were obtained from cephalograms. In total, 53 angular and linear parameters were m

[Changes of the upper airway in children with Class Ⅱ mandibular retrusion and snoring during night before and after functional treatment by sagittal-guidance Twin-block appliance].

PURPOSE: To study the changes of dimension and morphology of upper airway in children with ClassⅡ mandibular retrusion after functional treatment by sagittal-guidance Twin-block appliance. METHODS: Cone-beam CT (CBCT) data of upper airway of the subjects were measured by Dolphin 11.5 software and Mimics 17.0 software , and the changes of dimension and morphology of upper airway before and after functional treatment with sagittal-guidance Twin-block(SGTB) appliance were compared. SPSS 16.0 software package was used for data processing. RESULTS: After functional treatment, the volume of total u

Changes in the position of the condyle after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy in patients with mandibular retrusion and protrusion: a new condyle: fossa matching concept.

The purpose of this study was to compare the condylar positional changes after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) in patients with mandibular retrusion and those with mandibular prognathism. We also studied the correlation between the degree of matching of the condyle and fossa, and condylar displacement. Thirty patients with mandibular retrusion (n=11) or mandibular prognathism (n=19) who underwent BSSRO were included. The condylar position was assessed from spiral computed tomographic (CT) scans taken preoperatively, during the first postoperative week, and at least 6 months po

[Rehabilitation of patients with asymmetrical maxillary deformations].

Observations of 31 patients aged 16-31 years (11 men and 20 women) with asymmetrical maxillary deformations showed that medical rehabilitation of this patient population requires a comprehensive orthodontic and surgical approach. Such an approach leads to good esthetic and functional results without relapses of the deformation. A modified method of maxillary osteotomy was used, taking into consideration the clinical manifestations of asymmetrical deformation. Effective surgical treatment implies thorough planning of the volume of intervention and reliable fixation of osteotomied maxillary comp

The behaviour of the maxilla in vertical movements after Le Fort I osteotomy.

In 15 cases of ordinary Le Fort I osteotomy with simultaneous vertical displacement, the behaviour of the maxilla in respect to vertical movement was examined. It was observed that out of 12 maxilla which had been tilted downwards, 10 moved upwards again. One maxilla remained stable and another one moved further downwards. Of 3 cases with upward movement, two remained stable whereas one moved further upwards. Therefore, the authors conclude that the downward displacement especially is unstable and that one has either to overcorrect or search for possibilities of stabilization other than wiring

Further refining the critical region of 10q26 microdeletion syndrome: A possible involvement of INSYN2 and NPS in the cognitive phenotype.

BACKGROUND: The 10q26 subtelomeric microdeletion syndrome is a rare and clinically heterogeneous disorder. The precise relationships between the causative genes and the phenotype are unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two new cases of 860 kb deletion of 10q26.2 identified by array CGH in a fetus with intrauterine growth retardation and his mother. The deleted region encompassed only four coding genes, DOCK1, INSYN2, NPS and FOX12. The proband had dysmorphic facies characterized by a high forehead, malformed ears, a prominent nose, and retrognathia. He had bilateral club feet, clinodactily …

A de novo Variant of ASXL1 Is Associated With an Atypical Phenotype of Bohring-Opitz Syndrome: Case Report and Literature Review.

Bohring-Opitz syndrome (BOS) is a rare genetic disease first reported by Bohring et al. in 1999. With the recent development of exome sequencing (ES), de novo truncating mutations in the additional sex-combs-like 1 (ASXL1) gene have been causally implicated in BOS. Herein, we describe a 7-month-old girl with intrauterine growth restriction, severe pulmonary infection, seizures, and craniofacial abnormalities (microcephaly, micro/retrognathia, hypertelorism, depressed nasal bridge, low-set ears and hypertrichosis) at birth. At a later stage, the patient developed global developmental delay. We …
