Temporal integration functions were measured, before and after a sound-induced hearing loss, in 5 cats using trains of electrical pulses applied to auditory nuclei in the brainstem. The 8 stimuli ranged from 1 pulse (0.25 ms duration) to 16 pulses (0.25 ms pulses spaced over 240 ms). The stimuli were applied to inferior colliculus or cochlear nucleus via permanently implanted electrodes. One electrode was tested extensively in each animal to obtain 10 sets of behaviorally-measured electrical detection thresholds counterbalanced across stimuli. The animal was then exposed to a 110 dB SPL, 2 kHz

BACKGROUND: Early pregnancy loss (EPL) occurs in approximately 8% of equine pregnancies, although the aetiology is mostly unknown and embryo … ecific neural tissue alterations were identified including disruption of developing pros-, mes- and rhombencephalon and the presence of haemosiderin, indicating premortem haemorrhage. Failed neural tube closure was identified in 1/13 EPL embryos/fetuses. Subcutaneous haemorrhage was present in 14/27 EPL embryos/fetuses.
MAIN LIMITATIONS: Autolysis significantly …

BACKGROUND: Although rare, rhombencephalitis or inflammation of the brainstem and cerebellum has significantly associated morbidity and mortality.
CLINICAL FEATURES: We describe the case of a 64-year-old previously healthy, immunocompetent man who presented with acute bulbar symptoms (difficulty swallowing, change in phonation, and drooling). His symptoms progressed in severity and he ultimately required intubation due to declining lung function and inability to manage his secretions. Clinical examination revealed bulbar dysfunction without involvement of other cranial nerves. A lumbar punctu

We present a case of Listeria rhombencephalitis (brainstem encephalitis) with abscess formation in a healthy woman in her late 30s at 6 weeks postpartum, presenting with acute onset of fever, headache and neurologic deficits. The diagnosis was confirmed with a positive Listeria monocytogenes cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) PCR assay and contrast-enhanced brain MRI revealing multiple brainstem abscesses. The patient's course was complicated by aspiration pneumonia due to bulbar dysfunction and neuromuscular respiratory failure, requiring prolonged intubation. The patient was treated with an 8 week

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fetal imaging is crucial in the evaluation of open neural tube defects. The identification of intraventricular hemorrhage prenatally has unclear clinical implications. We aimed to explore fetal imaging findings in open neural tube defects and evaluate associations between intraventricular hemorrhage with prenatal and postnatal hindbrain herniation, postnatal intraventricular hemorrhage, and ventricular shunt placement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: After institutional review board approval, open neural tube defect cases evaluated by prenatal sonography between January 1, 2013

Listeria (L.) monocytogenes is an opportunistic pathogen causing life-threatening infections in diverse mammalian species including humans and ruminants. As little is known on the link between strains and clinicopathological phenotypes, we studied potential strain-associated virulence and organ tropism in L. monocytogenes isolates from well-defined ruminant cases of clinical infections and the farm environment. The phylogeny of isolates and their virulence-associated genes were analyzed by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and sequence analysis of virulence-associated genes. Additionally, a pa

Gómez-López-Hernández syndrome is a rare neurocutaneous disorder characterized by the triad of rhombencephalosynapsis, parietal alopecia, and trigeminal anesthesia. We report a 16-year-old girl with bilateral parietotemporal alopecia in whom cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed rhombencephalosynapsis, suggesting a diagnosis of Gómez-López-Hernández syndrome. Neurologic examination and neuroimaging may be warranted in select patients with parietal alopecia to exclude this uncommon entity.

The posterior fossa may be enlarged due to: mega cisterna magna, arachnoid cyst or Dandy Walker malformation. These anomalies can be identified during routine ultrasound screening performed in the beginning of the second half of pregnancy (22nd week). The outcome of these findings is not clear. Therefore, it is difficult to advise the parents how to manage the pregnancy after the discovery of this anomaly. Most of the studies report a good prognosis in cases of mega cisterna magna or arachnoid cyst, as long as this finding is isolated. A Dandy-Walker malformation or non-isolated enlargement of

The amplitude of glycinergic miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs) varies considerably in neurons recorded in the isolated hindbrain of 50-h-old zebrafish larvae. At this age, glycinergic synapses are functionally mature. In order to measure the occupancy level of postsynaptic glycine receptors (GlyRs) and to determine the pre- and/or postsynaptic origin of its variability, we analysed mIPSCs within bursts evoked by alpha-latrotoxin (0.1-1 nM). Two types of burst were observed according to their mIPSC frequencies: 'slow' bursts with clearly spaced mIPSCs and 'fast' bursts charact

There has been almost no evaluation or discussion of the symmetry of tonsillar ectopia in the medical literature. We measured the degree of left and right tonsillar herniation in 42 pediatric patients with a symptomatic Chiari I malformation and made clinical/radiological correlations. 18% of all patients with tonsillar asymmetry had clinical symptoms or physical findings referable to the inequality of their hindbrain herniation. In addition, 95% of patients with a coexisting syringomyelia had a right cerebellar tonsillar herniation greater than the left. We hypothesize that slight differences

Guidance of cranial motor axons to their targets conforms to a segmental plan in the chick embryo. Trigeminal motor neurons lie within rhombomeres 2 and 3 and project via an exit point in rhombomere 2 to innervate the first branchial arch. Facial motor neurons lie within rhombomeres 4 and 5 and grow out via an exit point in rhombomere 4 to innervate the second branchial arch. We have investigated the axial level-specific matching of motor neurons and branchial arches using donor to host transplantation in avian embryos. Previous work has shown that rostrocaudal reversal of a single hindbrain s

This study investigated the effects of bilateral injections of a serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonist into the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) on the intake of NaCl and water induced by 24-h water deprivation or by sodium depletion followed by 24 h of sodium deprivation (injection of the diuretic furosemide plus 24 h of sodium-deficient diet). Rats had stainless steel cannulas implanted bilaterally into the LPBN. Bilateral LPBN injections of the serotonergic 5-HT1/2 receptor antagonist methysergide (4 micrograms/200 nl at each site) increased hypertonic NaCl intake when tested 24 h after sodi

The present study investigated the effects of bilateral injections of the nonselective CCK receptor antagonist proglumide or CCK-8 into the lateral parabrachial nuclei (LPBN) on the ingestion of 0.3 M NaCl and water induced by intracerebroventricular injection of ANG II or by a combined treatment with subcutaneous furosemide (Furo) + captopril (Cap). Compared with the injection of saline (vehicle), bilateral LPBN injections of proglumide (50 micrograms . 200 nl-1 . site-1) increased the intake of 0.3 M NaCl induced by intracerebroventricular ANG II (50 ng/1 microliter). We report on two cases of 3C (cranio-cerebello-cardiac) syndrome. At least five previous cases are known. This recently delineated malformation syndrome is characterized by congenital anomalies of the skull, hindbrain, and heart. The anomalies include a high and prominent forehead, a hypoplastic vermis and posterior fossa cyst with or without hydrocephalus, and an atrial or atrio-ventricular septal defect with or without other heart anomalies. Most patients show a postnatal growth retardation, as well as a mild to moderate psychomotor retardation. Early death is usually in association with sev

Hamsters were exposed to intense tones (10 kHz) at levels and durations sufficient to cause stereocilia lesions. The purpose was to determine how the tonotopic map of the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) readjusts to loss of receptor sensitivity. Neural population thresholds and tonotopic organization was mapped over the surface of the DCN in normal unexposed animals and those showing tone-induced lesions. The results indicate that cochlear lesions characterized mainly by loss of stereocilia in a restricted portion of the organ of Corti cause changes in a corresponding region of the tonotopic map

Listeria rhombencephalitis (L. rhombencephalitis) is an uncommon form of central nervous system infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes (LM). It often occurs to immunocompetent individuals. Here, we described the case of a 45-year-old female patient without medical histories, who presented for high-grade fever, headache, and focal neurological manifestations. She was initially empirically diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) because of clinical symptoms, acute clinical course, and neuroimaging. However, the biochemical analysis of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) questioned

Listeria rhombencephalitis is a rare cause of brain stem encephalitis. We report a case with a history of immunosupressive therapy due to Takayasu's arteritis that was treated with corticosteroids and linezolid for Listeria rhombencephalitis. A 63-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. The patient's body temperature was 38°C, and she had a stiff neck. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and penicillin G and gentamicin treatment was initiated. Linezolid and dexamethasone were added. Due to hematuria and thrombo
