Genes associated with endolysosomal function have been recently associated with familial Parkinson's disease and described as risk factors for sporadic cases. This indicates that deficits in this pathway predispose to parkinsonism. Leptospirosis is one of the most important zoonoses in tropical countries, including Nicaragua, where it is considered endemic. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of Leptospira spp in rodents captured from peridomestic sites in leptospirosis endemic regions of Nicaragua. Using live traps, 191 rodents were captured in 2012 and 2013 between April and December. Kidney samples were collected and processed for Leptospira detection from 166 animals by direct culture and isolation. The isolates were tested by PCR for LipL32 and lfb1-F genes specific to pathogenic Leptospira species.

The structure and morphometry of the epididymis in the greater cane rat were studied in this work. In assessing the morphology and characterising the morphometric values, a total of 15 adult male greater cane rats, bred and raised in captivity, were used. The optic nerve of a microphthalmic subterranean rodent, Spalax leucodon, has been examined at the ultrastructural level. The analysis of the optic nerve reveals only 1,790 unmyelinated axons. The axon diameter varies from 0.05 to 2.3 microns, with a mean of 0.55 micron. We suggest that these axons mainly belong to the W type ganglion cells.
