Validation of field-based running tests to determine maximal aerobic speed in professional rugby league.

Practitioners place importance on high-speed running (HSR) to monitor training practice and match-play demands, whilst attempting to maximise fitness and minimize the risk of injury occurrence. Practitioners apply various methods to quantify HSR, such as absolute thresholds, percentage of maximum sprint speed and maximal aerobic speed (MAS). A recent survey demonstrates the 5-minute run and 1200m shuttle test (ST) to be implemented among rugby league practitioners to quantify HSR by incorporating MAS. However, it is unclear as to how valid these methods are to accurately quantify MAS. Therefor…

Predicting Athlete Workload in Women's Rugby Sevens Using GNSS Sensor Data, Contact Count and Mass.

The use of session rating of perceived exertion (sRPE) as a measure of workload is a popular athlete load monitoring tool. However, the nature of sRPE means the contribution of salient, sport-specific factors to athlete load in field sports is challenging to isolate and quantify. In rugby sevens, drivers of load include high-speed running and physical contact. In soccer and men's rugby, union acceleration/deceleration also influences load. These metrics are evaluated using data from global navigation satellite system (GNSS) sensors worn by athletes. Research suggests that sensor data methods f…

Collision Volume and Contact Exposure Profile in Elite Women's Rugby Union: Differences Compared with Men.

Elite women's rugby has often been analysed using the male performance model as a reference, despite evidence that women's rugby presents distinct game demands and potentially different risk profiles. This study aimed to compare the frequency of key contact-related events between elite men's and women's rugby. An observational, retrospective, comparative cohort study was conducted using official performance data from 135 international matches from the men's and women's Six Nations Championships. Variables were grouped into three categories: Open-Play, Static Phases, and Discipline. Independent…
