Nutritional Regulation of Reproductive Physiology in Ruminants: A Mechanistic Review.

Modern genetic selection for high productivity has created a physiological conflict in ruminants, where the metabolic demands of lactation compete directly with the energy requirements of reproduction. This review provides a mechanistic synthesis of how key nutritional factors modulate the endocrine and cellular pathways governing reproductive success in cattle and sheep. Negative energy balance (NEB), characteristic of the early postpartum period, suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis by impairing the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteiniz

Triclabendazole and Other Fasciolicides: Resistance of Fasciola hepatica in Ruminants.

Fasciolosis is a globally prevalent trematode infection of major veterinary and public-health relevance. Juveniles migrate through liver tissue for weeks before patency, so clinically important infection may occur while faecal egg output is undetectable, complicating control and interpretation of apparent treatment failure. Triclabendazole (TCBZ) remains central because it targets both immature and adult flukes, but sustained use has been accompanied by geographically expanding reports of reduced efficacy and confirmed resistance. Most alternative fasciolicides, such as albendazole, closantel,

Histopathologic and phylogenetic assessment of abomasal coccidiosis in small ruminants.

Eimeria gilruthi, an underreported coccidian parasite, primarily infects the abomasum of small ruminants. It has an unclear life cycle, and its phylogenetic relationship remains poorly understood. Most E. gilruthi infections are incidental, with rare descriptions of those associated with clinical disease. This study aims to characterize the lesions, immune sresponse, and molecular identity of E. gilruthi in naturally infected small ruminants. Histopathology, special stains, and immunohistochemistry for immune cells were used to assess tissue responses in the abomasum of 4 goats and one sheep.

Comparative Infection Pathways of Listeria monocytogenes in Humans Versus Ruminants.

Severe infection caused by L. monocytogenes in humans is primarily linked to the pathogen's ability to cross the intestinal barrier and disseminate within the host. Once internalized, L. monocytogenes exhibits intracellular motility that enables colonization of secondary target organs, including the brain and placenta. This review aims to critically compare the infection pathways of L. monocytogenes in humans and ruminant hosts, highlighting the molecular mechanisms that enable bacterial survival, organ tropism, and adaptation to host-specific stressors. By focusing on these comparative pathwa

Strongyle nematode fauna in three ruminants in upper northern Thailand.

Gastrointestinal parasites, particularly strongyle nematodes, pose a significant threat to the health of ruminants. Due to the technical limitations of microscopic and conventional PCR-based methods, the strongyle parasite fauna has not been well studied even in common livestock animals. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence and diversity of strongyle nematodes in three ruminant species in northern Thailand using a nemabiome approach. Fecal samples were collected from buffaloes, cattle, and goats that were raised for meat and for dairy in four provinces in northern Thailand. St

A scoping review of Coxiella burnetii transmission models in ruminants.

Coxiella burnetii is a highly infectious zoonotic bacterium that causes Q fever in humans and coxiellosis in animals. C. burnetii is mainly transmitted from infectious ruminants, particularly during parturition or abortions, to susceptible hosts through the inhalation of contaminated aerosols from the environment. Transmission models have the potential to aid the understanding of transmission dynamics and allow for various control measures to be evaluated. The objective of this PRISMA-ScR guided scoping review was to summarise the key characteristics of C. burnetii transmission models in rumin

Occurrence of Coxiellosis in ruminants and its associated risk factors.

Coxiellosis in animals is caused by the zoonotic pathogen, Coxiella burnetii. Although the disease is of public health importance it remains underdiagnosed and underreported. The cross- sectional study was aimed to estimate the occurrence of the disease in livestock of study area and also to identify the risk factors associated with the disease in animals. Blood, serum, and vaginal swabs samples were collected from 200 ruminants (cattle, sheep, and goats), across various farms in Karnataka, India. These samples were then screened using ELISA and PCR (com1 and IS1111). A questionnaire was admin

Ribavirin inhibits peste des petits ruminants virus proliferation in vitro.

Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), a member of the family Paramyxoviridae, belongs to the genus Morbillivirus. It causes devastating viral diseases in small ruminants and has been rapidly spreading over various regions in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Although vaccination is thought to be an effective management strategy against PPR infections, the heat sensitivity of PPRV vaccines severely restricts their use in regions with hot climates. In this research, we studied the antiviral activities of ribavirin and aimed to understand the potential mechanisms of action of ribavirin in the

Immune defenses of the mammary gland epithelium of dairy ruminants.

The epithelium of the mammary gland (MG) fulfills three major functions: nutrition of progeny, transfer of immunity from mother to newborn, and its own defense against infection. The defense function of the epithelium requires the cooperation of mammary epithelial cells (MECs) with intraepithelial leucocytes, macrophages, DCs, and resident lymphocytes. The MG is characterized by the secretion of a large amount of a nutrient liquid in which certain bacteria can proliferate and reach a considerable bacterial load, which has conditioned how the udder reacts against bacterial invasions. This revie

Alpha-mannosidosis caused by toxic plants in ruminants of Argentina.

It is well known that several of the swainsonine-containing plant species found widespread around the world have a negative economic impact in each country. In Argentina, most of the information on the poisonous plant species that produce α-mannosidosis is published in Spanish and thus not available to most English-speaking researchers interested in toxic plants. Therefore, the aim of this review is to summarize the information about swainsonine-containing plants in Argentina, which are extensively distributed throughout different ecoregions of the country. To date, five species from three gen

Anthelmintic resistance in small ruminants in the Nordic-Baltic region.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in small ruminants result in production losses, and consequently economic losses, and are an animal welfare problem in most countries in the Nordic-Baltic region. Intensive use of anthelmintics to control helminth infections has led to anthelmintic resistance (AR), which has become a major issue in many European countries. Several studies have been performed in countries in the Nordic-Baltic region (e.g. Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania) showing increasing/emerging levels of AR. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the problem of AR on sheep

Progress towards Eradication of Peste des Petits Ruminants through Vaccination.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a transboundary viral disease that threatens more than 1.74 billion goats and sheep in approximately 70 countries globally. In 2015, the international community set the goal of eradicating PPR by 2030, and, since then, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) have jointly developed and implemented the Global Control and Eradication Strategy for PPR. Here, data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Statistical Database (FAOSTAT), the OIE World Animal Health Information Sys

Eurytrema coelomaticum natural infection in small ruminants: a neglected condition.

Pancreatic eurytrematosis (PE) is an under diagnosed and neglected parasitosis in goats and sheep in the Americas. Clinical and pathological features of PE are not well defined in small ruminants worldwide. Natural cases of PE in small ruminants were detected in the Federal District, Brazil. A survey of necropsy records, including epidemiological and clinicopathological data, in goats and sheep was conducted. Most cases of PE occurred during the rainy season in adult females, with an incidence of 12.9% in goats and 0.8% in sheep. Clinical signs varied from asymptomatic infections to anorexia,

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Trueperella pyogenes isolated from food-producing ruminants.

A total of 96 Trueperella pyogenes isolates, an opportunistic pathogen of food-producing ruminants, obtained from cattle (n = 34), sheep (n = 35) and goats (n = 27), and identified by Real Time PCR (qPCR), were analysed to determine the susceptibility to 12 antimicrobials commonly used in livestock, using a broth microdilution. The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) distribution was unimodal for half of the antimicrobials tested with the exception of apramycin, gentamicin, streptomycin, oxytetracycline, tylosin, and erythromycin all of which showed bimodal MIC distributions. Low MIC90 valu

An historical view of the experimental leptospiral infection in ruminants.

The first experimental infections with Leptospira in ruminants were conducted in the 1950s, primarily assessed the pathogenesis caused by serovar Pomona in cows. Throughout the decades, experimental infections have also demonstrated the clinical aspects of the infection by other strains, mainly Hardjo. Despite the important outcomes observed in experimental infections in ruminants, there is still a large discrepancy regarding the ideal dose, route, strain, model species or animal age that should be used to reproduce the acute and chronic leptospirosis in ruminants. In this context, the present

Process intensification for Peste des Petites Ruminants Virus vaccine production.

Process intensification for Peste des Petites Ruminants Virus (PPRV) vaccine production in anchorage dependent Vero cells is challenging, involving substantial amount of bioprocess development. In this study, we describe the implementation of a new, scalable bioprocess for PPRV vaccine production in Vero cells using serum-free medium (SFM), microcarrier technology in stirred-tank bioreactors (STB), in-situ cell detachment from microcarriers and perfusion. Vero cells were successfully adapted to ProVero™-1 SFM, reaching growth rates similar to serum-containing cultures (0.030 1/h vs 0.026 1/h,

Laparoscopic Artificial Insemination Technique in Small Ruminants-A Procedure Review.

Laparoscopic artificial insemination (LAI) is an intrauterine method of insemination, especially utilized in the small ruminant species to bypass their unique anatomically tortuous cervix. There are several advantages of LAI that include efficient use of processed semen leading to higher pregnancy rates. Success of LAI programs depends on proper implementation of estrus synchronization programs, patient selection and thorough knowledge of the reproductive physiology. In addition, proper equipment and surgical expertise help in reducing patient morbidity and mortality rates. LAI can be associat
