Combined application of H2S and a plant growth promoting strain JIL321 regulates photosynthetic efficacy, soil enzyme activity and growth-promotion in rice under salt stress.

Salinity stress is one of the most harmful abiotic stresses that inhibit crop growth and grain yield. In this study, a salt-tolerant bacterium was isolated from the soil of the rice rhizosphere and named Myroides sp. JIL321, based on the results of the phylogenetic tree analysis. The strain JIL321 tolerated up to 1, 283.37 mM of NaCl and exhibited positive plant growth-promoting traits, such as the production of indole acetic acid (IAA) and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase. Therefore, the effects of JIL321 on rice (Oryza sativa L.) under salinity stress were determined. The in

Mechanisms of salinity tolerance and their possible application in the breeding of vegetables.

BACKGROUND: In dry and semi-arid areas, salinity is the most serious hazard to agriculture, which can affect plant growth and development adversely. Over-accumulation of Na+ in plant organs can cause an osmotic effect and an imbalance in nutrient uptake. However, its harmful impact can vary depending on genotype, period of exposure to stress, plant development stage, and concentration and content of salt. To overcome the unfavorable effect of salinity, plants have developed two kinds of tolerance strategies based on either minimizing the entrance of salts by the roots or administering their co

[Water Purification Effect and Saline-alkali Tolerance Improvement Mechanism of Suaeda salsa in the Estuary Area].

The pollution load of nitrogen and phosphorus in pollutants entering the sea is high, which seriously affects the water quality of coastal water. It is necessary to strengthen land-sea coordination. However, affected by the seawater encroachment, the salt and alkali content of the water in the estuary area is high and the variation range is large, which leads to difficulty in plant growth. The ability of plants to remove nitrogen and phosphorus is reduced. How to improve the survival ability of plants is an urgent problem to be solved. In this study, the addition of appropriate concentrations

Role of the salt glands of Armeria maritima (halophyte) in removal of lead from tissues.

Armeria maritima is a halophyte exhibiting a strong tolerance to heavy metals. It grows on zinc-lead waste heaps. This study aimed to determine the role of salt glands in the removal of lead (Pb) from plants and to trace the path of lead from the shoots to the salt glands on the surface of leaves. Mechanisms allowing high tolerance to lead in A. maritima were also evaluated. These examinations were conducted on a lead-tolerant population and a lead-sensitive plant population. The plants were treated with Pb(NO3)2 and the path of lead was traced from the roots to the leaves. The lead-tolerant p

OASA1D-Mediated Tryptophan Enrichment Improves Redox and Ionic Homeostasis Under Salt Stress in Rice.

Salinity restricts rice growth by disrupting cellular ion balance and promoting oxidative damage. Although exogenous melatonin can improve rice salt tolerance, whether expansion of the endogenous tryptophan pool enhances melatonin biosynthetic capacity and stress acclimation remains unclear. Here, we investigated a homozygous transgenic rice line constitutively expressing OASA1D, a feedback-insensitive D323N variant of the anthranilate synthase α-subunit OASA1. The OASA1D-expressing line exhibited strong resistance to 5-methyltryptophan and accumulated approximately twofold more tryptophan tha…

Temperature-dependent differences in seawater tolerance between amphidromous and landlocked ayu Plecoglossus altivelis.

Ayu Plecoglossus altivelis, one of the most important inland fishery species in Japan, exhibits a semelparous annual life cycle. Although native populations are primarily amphidromous, landlocked ayu from Lake Biwa have been widely released into rivers nationwide. This landlocked population diverged from amphidromous ancestor approximately 100,000 years ago and exhibits distinctive morphological and physiological traits. In order to assess how translocation of landlocked ayu may affect native populations, we examined the mechanisms underlying the differences in seawater acclimation capacity be

Analysing how plants in coastal wetlands respond to varying tidal regimes throughout their life cycles.

Important to conserve plant species in coastal wetlands throughout their life cycle. All life stages in these habitats are exposed to varying tidal cycles. It is necessary to investigate all life stages as to how they respond to varying tidal regimes. We examine three wetlands containing populations of an endangered halophyte species, each subjected to different tidal regimes: (1). wetlands completely closed to tidal cycles; (2). wetlands directly exposed to tidal cycles (3). wetlands exposed to a partially closed tidal regime. Our results showed that the most threatened stage varied between w

[Contribution of sigma B to environmental stress tolerance in Listeria monocytogenes--a review].

The alternative sigma factor Sigma B plays important roles in both virulence and stress tolerance in Listeria monocytogenes. It is now clear that there is a strong link between the virulence potential of Listeria monocytogenes and its ability to tolerate stress. Several studies have identified genes that play important roles in stress tolerance and virulence. For example, genes involved in osmotic stress tolerance, acid and alkaline tolerance, oxidative stress tolerance, extreme temperature tolerance, and bile salt tolerance have all been implicated in the virulence of L. monocytogenes. We rev…

Genome shuffling of Hansenula anomala to improve flavour formation of soy sauce.

Genome shuffling of mutagenized Hansenula anomala was used to improve soy-sauce flavour by enhancing its salt-tolerance, because the concentration of salt was about 17% in high-salt liquid fermentation of soy sauce. A mutant strain H3-8, with stronger resistance to salt, was selected and screened after three rounds of genome shuffling. It was found that H3-8 could grow in YPD media containing a high salt content and within a wide range of pH. In high-salt liquid fermentation, the soy-sauce flavour components produced by H3-8 were distinctly improved compared with the control strains Zygosaccha

The molecular network in bacteria responsible for the mitigation of salinity stress.

The World’s major abiotic stress is salinity stress, which affects over 833 million hectares of agricultural lands and risks food security by reducing crop yields and interfering with plant physiological systems. It has been predicted that salinity stress will affect about 50% of crops by 2050. Through a variety of molecular mechanisms, PGPR (plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria) have evolved as bioinoculants that enhance plant tolerance to salinity stress. Bacterial molecular mechanisms include the biosynthesis of suitable key osmolytes, ion transporters, modulation of hormones via ACC deamin

Comparative Effects of High-Molecular-Weight Chitosan and Chitosan Oligosaccharide Lactate on Metabolic Adjustment and Salinity Tolerance in Cucumis sativus L.

Salinity is one of the most harmful abiotic factors limiting crop productivity. Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide biostimulant able to alleviate salt stress, but its efficiency depends on its physicochemical properties, which remain insufficiently understood. The present study aimed to determine whether two chemically distinct forms of chitosan, i.e., high-molecular-weight chitosan (ChT) and chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChL), differentially mitigate the adverse effects of NaCl-induced salinity in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Plants were grown hydroponically under control conditions o

H2S pretreatment mitigates the alkaline salt stress on Malus hupehensis roots by regulating Na+/K+ homeostasis and oxidative stress.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays an important role in the plant salt stress response. The main component of salt stress is neutral salt (NaCl); NaHCO3 and Na2CO3 play a key role in soil alkaline due to the influence of pH. Malus hupehensis Rehd. var. pingyiensis Jiang (Pingyi Tiancha, PYTC) is a salt-sensitive apple rootstock. Seedlings of PYTC pretreated with NaHS (an H2S donor) were exposed to an alkaline salt solution, and then the plant growth, root architecture, oxidative damage, Na+/K+ homeostasis and gene expression of MhSOS1 and MhSKOR were investigated. The results showed that NaHS pretre

Interplay between gasotransmitters and potassium is a K+ey factor during plant response to abiotic stress.

Carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are gasotransmitters known for their roles in plant response to (a)biotic stresses. The crosstalk between these gasotransmitters and potassium ions (K+) has received considerable attention in recent years, particularly due to the dual role of K+ as an essential mineral nutrient and a promoter of plant tolerance to abiotic stress. This review brings together what it is known about the interplay among NO, CO, H2S and K+ in plants with focus on the response to high salinity. Some findings obtained for plants under water deficit an

Gibberellin-dependent brassinosteroid signaling modulates plant growth by optimizing nitrogen levels during salinity stress.

Low nitrogen (LN) and high salt stress are major constraints for plant growth and development. Under LN stress, plants typically show root elongation to increase nitrogen foraging from the rhizosphere, whereas high salt levels cause inhibition of root growth to avoid salinity stress-induced toxicity. To date, mechanisms and strategies of root adaptations in plants under combined LN and high salt stress remain poorly defined. Here, we provide evidence that Arabidopsis plants under LN stress show increased brassinosteroid (BR) signaling activity, which in turn suppresses salt stress-responsive p

Hydrogen sulfide pretreatment mitigates the adverse effects of salinity in young carob seedlings.

Despite the inherent high salinity tolerance of mature carob (Ceratonia siliqua L., Fabaceae) trees, young seedlings are particularly vulnerable to salt stress, which can hinder their growth and development. Although hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) has been widely studied as a regulator of salinity tolerance in herbaceous plants, its role in woody legumes remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to explore the potential of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) pretreatment to enhance the salinity tolerance of young carob seedlings. A pot experiment was conducted using a factorial design to evaluate the effects of
