We undertook this study to determine the amount of scattered radiation received by the primary surgeon, assistant and patient during dynamic hip screw fixation for proximal femoral fractures. Data was collected from fifty patients. Five registrars were included as operating surgeon and four senior house officers as assistant surgeon. Radiation was monitored by thermo luminescent dosimeters placed on the surgeon and assistant. The approximate distance of surgeon and assistant from the operative site was measured. A dosimeter on the unaffected hip of patients measured the radiation to the patien

Products containing ultraviolet (UV) radiation absorbing or scattering ingredients provide varying degrees of protection from sunlight (or other UV sources), thus minimizing the deleterious effects on the skin. The "sun protection factor" (SPF) of sunscreen products has become a well recognized indicator of protection against sunburn induced predominantly by ultraviolet B radiation (UVB: 290-320 nm). A similar system of denoting sunscreen protection from ultraviolet A (UVA: 320-400 nm) radiation has not been universally recognized. A variety of test methods have been proposed, both in vitro an

INTRODUCTION: Awareness of the harmful effects of long-term low-dose radiation is increasing. There are few comprehensive reports that accurately evaluate the radiation exposure dose to spinal interventionalists during selective nerve root block (SNRB). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiation exposure doses from C-arm fluoroscopy to different body areas of the interventionalist and to assess the effectiveness of lead-equivalent protective gear in reducing radiation exposure during SNRB.
METHODS: Seven fresh cadavers were irradiated for 1 and 3 minutes using C-arm fluoroscopy t

PURPOSE: This thesis explores the idea that light energy, especially ultraviolet light, contributes to the unequal distribution of cataract around the world and to the development of cortical opacities.
METHODS: In the first section, the thesis reviews historical concepts of the function of the lens and the nature of cataract, epidemiologic data on the global distribution of cataract, and clinical observations of the predominant location of cortical opacification. Second, computer ray tracings and geometric optics demonstrate the passage of light of varying angle of incidence within the lens.

The space radiation environment imposes increased dangers of exposure to ionizing radiation, particularly during a solar particle event. These events consist primarily of low-energy protons that produce a highly inhomogeneous depth-dose distribution. Here we describe a novel technique that uses pencil beam scanning at extended source-to-surface distances and range shifter (RS) to provide robust but easily modifiable delivery of simulated solar particle event radiation to large animals. Thorough characterization of spot profiles as a function of energy, distance and RS position is critical to a

As an object rotates with respect to a stationary planar ultrasonic beam, the scattering centres within the object return echoes that are Doppler-shifted in frequency by amounts depending on the velocities of the individual scatterers. The backscattered echo amplitude at any particular frequency is the line integral of the scattered radiation at the cross-range corresponding to that frequency. The amplitude as a function of frequency can be interpreted as a tomographic projection. A tomographic reconstruction algorithm can produce an image of the distribution of scattering centres in the inson

Microscopic characterization of pathological tissues has one major intrinsic limitation, the small sampling areas with respect to the extension of the tissues. Mapping possible changes on vast tissues and correlating them with large ensembles of clinical cases is not a feasible procedure for studying most diseases, as for instance vision loss related diseases and, in particular, the cataract. Although intraocular lens implants are successful treatments, cataract still is a leading public-health issue that grows in importance as the population increases and life expectancy is extended worldwide

BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopic-gated proton therapy (FGPT) enables precise dose delivery to tumors affected by respiratory motion by tracking internal fiducial markers and delivering the proton beam when the marker is within a gating window. However, scatter radiation from fluoroscopic x-rays may be detected by the dose monitor (DM) and mistakenly counted as proton monitor units (MU). To mitigate this issue, proton beam delivery is typically interrupted during the fluoroscopy pulse, a method known as interrupted continuous delivery (ICD). If the contamination from scattered fluoroscopic x-rays is su

Measuring platelet function is important for patient stratification to judge bleeding vs. thrombotic risk and for research into antiplatelet drugs to prevent cardiovascular disease. Variability in platelet function is not fully understood, and large studies of inter-individual variation are making gradual progress using laboratory measurements, but rapid and high-performance hematological tests are also needed. We present here a novel microfluidic technology for platelet function analysis that images light scatter by platelets, using a low-cost, open-source, high-throughput and customizable da

Poor aqueous solubility and complex supersaturation behaviour of small-molecule drugs require rapid, material-sparing analytical tools that capture incipient aggregation and phase separation events under non-equilibrium conditions. This work evaluated a miniaturised optical platform that combined second harmonic scattering (SHS) with linear light scattering (LLS) driven by an ultrafast 1030 nm laser to monitor supersaturated solutions of 12 poorly water-soluble drugs prepared by DMSO solvent shift in 384-well plates. LLS and SHS signals were recorded after 1 h and 24 h and compared with appare

BACKGROUND: Photon counting detectors (PCDs) have the potential to enable spectral cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in radiotherapy, which may improve tissue visualization, tissue characterization, and dose calculation accuracy. However, spectral imaging with PCDs such as material decomposition require highly quantitative raw data that accurately reflects X-ray attenuation through the imaged object.
PURPOSE: In CBCT, X-ray scatter is the primary cause of degraded raw-data fidelity. This study experimentally characterizes the effect of scatter on PCD counts and energy spectra and investiga

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing and characterizing breast lesions and tumors remains a common challenge in clinical practice. Ultrasound imaging stands out for its safety, real-time capability, and affordability. However, the image quality of conventional ultrasound examination is limited, and the diagnosis of ultrasonographic images depends heavily on the experience of the sonographer. Therefore, improving ultrasound images and extracting tissue information from ultrasound signals to provide auxiliary means is crucial for accurate breast tumor diagnosis.
PURPOSE: Medical ultrasound imaging has been w

A magnetic surface molecularly imprinted-resonance light scattering sensor was developed for rapid and highly sensitive detection of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). To prepare the surface imprinted polymer, Fe3O4 microspheres were selected as imprinting substrates which coated by silicon. Aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) as functional monomers for fixing template molecules JEV through a polymerization process of tetraethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS). The target virus JEV could be captured by the imprinted particles fastly and selectively, resulting in an increase of the RLS intensity. The resu

The experimental observation of cumulative second-harmonic generation of fundamental Lamb waves in long bones is reported. Based on the modal expansion approach to waveguide excitation and the dispersion characteristics of Lamb waves in long bones, the mechanism underlying the generation and accumulation of second harmonics by propagation of the fundamental Lamb waves was investigated. An experimental setup was established to detect the second-harmonic signals of Lamb wave propagation in long bones in vitro. Through analysis of the group velocities of the received signals, the appropriate fund

In view of the fact that many substances generally exhibit very little ultraviolet absorbance and the absence of native fluorescence, a new strategy with simple instrumentation and excellent analytical performance combining high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) was developed. It was validated for the quantification of aminoglycosides (AGs). This fact was also carefully calculated by quantum chemistry. However, the sensitivity was probably limited by the volume of flow-through cell. Therefore, the result calls for a suitable one to ensure optimal

The paper gives the results of studying the rate of light scattering by different corneal layers in keratoconus from confocal microscopy data. The study was conducted using a Confoscan-4 confocal microscope (Nidek, Japan). The rate of light scattering was estimated from the results of analyzing the densitometric curve, by applying a Z-scanning system. A total of 77 patients (136 eyes) with stages 1-4 keratoconus and 20 healthy individuals at the age of 16 to 20 years were examined. Confocal microscopy revealed corneal changes that were characteristic of different stages of keratoconus and a ca

Self-assembly of the 42-amino-acid-long amyloid peptide Abeta(1-42) into insoluble fibrillar deposits in the brain is a crucial event in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. The fibril deposition occurs through an aggregation process during which transient and metastable oligomeric intermediates are intrinsically difficult to be accurately monitored and characterised. In this work, the time-dependent Abeta(1-42) aggregation pattern is studied by asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation with on-line multi-angle light scattering detection. This technique allows separating and obtaining inf

We have used a low repetition rate (1 kHz), femtosecond laser amplifier in combination with a spatial light modulator (SLM) to write optical waveguides with controllable cross-section inside a phosphate glass sample. The SLM is used to induce a controllable amount of astigmatism in the beam wavefront while the beam ellipticity is controlled through the propagation distance from the SLM to the focusing optics of the writing set-up. The beam astigmatism leads to the formation of two separate disk-shaped foci lying in orthogonal planes. Additionally, the ellipticity has the effect of enabling con
