Esophageal reconstruction for benign disease: self-assessment of functional outcome and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Little information exists regarding functional outcome and quality of life after esophagectomy and subsequent esophageal reconst … role-physical, mental health, bodily pain, energy/fatigue, and role-emotional scores. CONCLUSIONS: Self-assessment of postoperative esophageal symptoms after esophagectomy and reconstruction for benign disease demonstrates that symptoms are frequently present at long-term follow-up and unaffected by the type of reconstruction.

Validity of self-assessment of sexual maturation in adolescent male patients with cystic fibrosis.

PURPOSE: Self-assessment of sexual maturity by healthy male adolescents has been found to correlate closely with physician ratings. Data are lacking, however, in adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF), where an altered body image may affect self-assessment. Delayed sexual maturation occurs in many patients with CF, particularly those with severe disease. We hypothesized that self-assessment of sexual maturation by adolescents with CF would agree with physician ratings. METHODS: Using Tanner's standard photographs for pubic hair (PH) and genital (G) development, we compared self-assessment of s…

Assessment of health: self-perceived health, chronic diseases, use of medicine. Euronut SENECA investigators.

In 17 towns in 11 countries across Europe, 10 questions on health were asked as part of a general standardized interview regarding self-perceived global and relative health, quality of life, chronic diseases, use of medicine and specific ailments. 2544 men and women born between 1913 and 1918 participated in the survey. No age-related health differences were found within this 5-year age group. Self-perceived global health was better in men than in women, and more men than women judged their health to be better than that of other persons of their age. The gender difference in prevalence of chro

Semantic-aware self-supervised learning using progressive sub-action regression for action quality assessment.

Action Quality Assessment (AQA) is a growing field in computer vision that focuses on objectively evaluating human actions from videos, with applications across various domains. Current approaches typically provide only a single overall score, which lacks the granular details necessary for actionable performance feedback. This limitation is compounded by the scarcity of fine-grained annotations; While a few publicly available datasets contain sub-action temporal boundaries, none provide explicit sub-score labels. This paper introduces a novel framework that addresses these challenges by decomp

Assessment of the relation between orthorexia nervosa and self-esteem in high school students.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia Nervosa is a condition characterized by an obsession with healthy eating that can negatively impact an individual's psychosocial functioning. The risk of developing orthorexia nervosa increases during adolescence due to environmental influences like social media and cultural norms. It is indicated that low self-esteem is linked to orthorexia nervosa, causing individuals to potentially use their fixation on healthy eating to seek social acceptance. This study aims to explore the connection between orthorexia nervosa and self-esteem among high school students. METHODS: In

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Self-Assessment for Spinal Fusion Surgery: A Case Report.

This is a report on self-assessment using Python, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and machine learning to predict patient readiness for spinal fusion surgery, including an analysis of whether the decision tree model recommended surgery. The case of a 79-year-old retired psychologist (the author) with spinal stenosis, a collapsed L4-L5 disk, and crushed exit spinal nerves is explored. A boosted decision tree was used for prediction, supported by logistic regression and path analysis. Synthetic data were used alongside real patient data to add variability to the dataset. In this study, patient res…

Validation and assessment of the self-injurious behavior scale for tic disorders (SIBS-T).

Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is a well-known phenomenon in patients with chronic tic disorders (CTD). To investigate prospectively symptomatology of SIB in adults with CTD, we developed and validated the self-injurious behavior scale for tic disorders (SIBS-T). Patients completed the SIBS-T and a variety of assessments for tics and comorbidities. We investigated SIB frequency, internal consistency of the SIBS-T, and carried out an exploratory factor analysis (EFA). We enrolled n = 123 adult patients with CTD. SIB was reported by n = 103 patients (83.7%). The most frequently reported SIB were

Automatic Assessment of Upper Extremity Function and Mobile Application for Self-Administered Stroke Rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation training is essential for a successful recovery of upper extremity function after stroke. Training programs are typically conducted in hospitals or rehabilitation centers, supervised by specialized medical professionals. However, frequent visits to hospitals can be burdensome for stroke patients with limited mobility. We consider a self-administered rehabilitation system based on a mobile application in which patients can periodically upload videos of themselves performing reach-to-grasp tasks to receive recommendations for self-managed exercises or progress reports. Sensing equ

Hospital-treated deliberate self-poisoning in the older adult: Identifying specific clinical assessment needs.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-treated deliberate self-poisoning is common, with a median patient age of around 33 years. Clinicians are less familiar with assessing older adults with self-poisoning and little is known about their specific clinical requirements. OBJECTIVE: To identify clinically important factors in the older-age population by comparing older adults (65+ years) with middle-aged adults (45-64 years) during an index episode of hospital-treated deliberate self-poisoning. METHODS: A prospective, longitudinal, cohort study of people presenting to a regional referral centre for deliberate s

Diabetes self-assessment score and the development of diabetes: A 10-year prospective study.

To verify that the Korean Diabetes Score (KDS), a self-assessment, predicts the risk of diabetes in various comprehensive risk models, and to investigate factors that enhance its predictive ability in a large cohort. We analyzed 8735 adults without diabetes in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, an ongoing large community-based 10-year cohort study. Incident diabetes was defined as fasting blood glucose ≥126 mg/dL or postload 2-hour glucose ≥200 mg/dL by 75 g oral glucose tolerance test conducted biennually, or currently taking medication for diabetes. Hazard ratios (HRs) using Cox regre…

Factors influencing self-assessment of cognition and functioning in bipolar disorder: a preliminary study.

INTRODUCTION: Self-assessment deficits are common in schizophrenia and span multiple aspects of functioning, including awareness of symptoms, and the ability to assess objective levels of cognitive deficits and everyday functioning. Whereas impaired awareness of illness in bipolar disorder during symptomatic periods is well understood, awareness of disability and cognitive deficits has been less well studied. METHODS: In this pilot study, 30 patients with a lifetime history of bipolar I disorder and current bipolar depression completed performance-based tests of cognition and functional capac…
