Despite the wide availability of peer-led grief support groups, there has been limited study of their methodology or outcomes. This pilot study examined a nonclinical sample of 99 adults who self-referred to a peer-led group. This group involved a time-limited, manualized, closed group intervention (Restorative Retelling) that was co-facilitated by peer volunteers. The study documented a low dropout rate from this free service with preimprovement/postimprovement in scores of grief distress as measured by the Prolonged Grief Disorder (PG-13) scale. The peer volunteers were preselected and train

BACKGROUND: Internet Support Groups (ISGs) offer people easy access to information regarding depression as well as support from others who are either currently suffering from depression or have previously suffered from depression. The safety and efficacy of ISGs for people with depression have not been thoroughly studied.
INTRODUCTION: The safety and helpfulness of a depression ISG were assessed by analyzing pre- and postintervention depressive symptoms, other psychological outcomes, and participant ratings of helpfulness.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were recruited through self-refer

The prognosis and therewith the quality of life of patients with beta-thalassaemia major is decisively influenced by the compliance with the therapy of the patients and their families, who are massively burdened with this lifelong and much time requiring treatment. To improve the compliance with therapy a group of 10 afflicted adolescents and young adults aged between 15 and 27 years was founded in 1992. The aims are to get to know the reasons for the unsatisfactory compliance with therapy, to promote the exchange of experience how to deal with the disease and its treatment, to give comprehens

People with chronic conditions such as diabetes use social media to interact with peers. While these online interactions allow them to exchange advice and gain insight into how others cope with their condition, concerns about 'misinformation' being shared are persistently raised, especially among medical professionals. Rather than assessing whether information shared on social media is 'correct' from a clinical perspective, we explore how people with diabetes negotiate what counts as legitimate knowledge as they interact in Facebook groups. Empirically, we draw on a six-month observation of in

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore how individuals with hernia engage with online peer-support communities and how their shared narratives reflect the experience of living with and seeking treatment for hernia.
METHODS: A qualitative netnographic approach was employed, analysing posts from a large online hernia support group with approximately 8,500 members across more than 10 countries. The group was selected following scoping of alternative online communities because of its size, activity, heterogeneity, and public accessibility. A purposive sample of 26 high-engagement discussion threads

BACKGROUND: Diagnoses of gynecologic and breast cancers in women may impose emotional and psychological burdens on their partners. Traditional notions of masculinity in Nigeria often discourage men from expressing vulnerability or seeking emotional support. This article explores the impact of a web-based peer support program on redefining masculinity among male partners of women diagnosed with these cancers.
OBJECTIVES: The study assesses how digital peer support groups facilitate emotional expression, reduce isolation, and promote a redefined, supportive masculinity that embraces empathy, vu

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have higher rates of mental health problems and lower levels of psychological well-being compared to the general population. This study examines the impact of these factors on the psychological well-being of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. In the trial conducted in 2024, a total of 78 patients were enrolled. They first completed a demographic characteristics form and Ryff’s Psychological Well-being Scale. Subsequently, the patients were randomly assigned to either the intervention group or the control group. The control group received routine care, while

Three consecutive, professionally led (as opposed to self-help) groups following the 12-step program (TSP) were integrated into a methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) program that included 32 heroin-addicted individuals in recovery. This report describes our experience in meeting the challenges that arose and our conclusions regarding the therapeutic potential of this integration. A professional therapeutic staff guided the groups. In-depth interviews of 10 participants and the reflections of the group leaders provided data for learning about the groups' experience. Initially the participants

The authors have attempted to make clear that recovery is a lifelong process. In its early phases, clients are working primarily to achieve relief from guilt and pain created by their addiction. As recovery progresses, however, there is a movement from a relief mentality to a true experience of delight (Enright 1980). The goals of treatment have been achieved when this shift is evident: when one is living comfortably, responsibly and joyfully without cocaine or other drugs. The authors' experience indicates that treating cocaine addicts in cocaine-specific groups is useful in that the homogene

OBJECTIVE: The Buried in Treasures (BIT) workshop is a promising treatment for hoarding disorder (HD), though many participants struggle with home uncluttering. This randomized waitlist-controlled trial investigated the efficacy of a version of BIT, augmented with in-home uncluttering practice (BIT+).
METHOD: Adults (N = 41) with hoarding disorder were recruited from the community and randomly assigned to BIT+ or waitlist. BIT+ consisted of 16 sessions of the BIT workshop and 10 uncluttering home visits over 18 weeks. Outcome measures included the Saving Inventory-Revised (self-report) and th

BACKGROUND: This qualitative research explored family caregivers' engagement and social support in a single online support group (OSG). It sought to answer two research questions: Q1: Was social support evident in the OSG? If so what types and how did these types relate to engagement? Q2: Were elements from the Context, Content and Delivery conceptual framework evident in the OSG? If so, what were the key elements of this group?
METHODS: Eighteen semi-structured interviews were carried out with members of a family caregiver OSG in Ireland. Data were analysed using deductive qualitative analys

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Parents of girls with Turner syndrome (TS) are coping with various challenges associated with caring for a child with a genetic disorder. We aimed to explore the importance of group support for parents of girls with TS in a small pilot study.
METHODS: Group support sessions for parents of girls with TS were divided into meetings regarding psychological aspects, medical aspects, and social aspects. Questionnaires about how the families perceive TS and what obstacles they are facing were given before and after the group support through the Mentimeter application. Questionnaires

BACKGROUND: The rarity that is inherent in rare disease (RD) often means that patients and parents of children with RDs feel uniquely isolated and therefore are unprepared or unsupported in their care. To overcome this isolation, many within the RD community turn to the internet, and social media groups in particular, to gather useful information about their RDs. While previous research has shown that social media support groups are helpful for those affected by RDs, it is unclear what these groups are particularly useful or helpful for patients and parents of children with RDs.
OBJECTIVE: Th

BACKGROUND: Contact dermatitis can be difficult to manage and overwhelming for patients, often requiring significant lifestyle changes.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate whether a contact dermatitis support group could help patients find community and learn from others who share similar experiences.
METHODS: Hour-long, monthly support group meetings facilitated by a social worker, research fellows, and a faculty dermatologist were held for approximately 1.5 years. A 32-question, cross-sectional survey was administered to assess perception of contact dermatitis and overall us

The increasing visibility of support groups has prompted a flurry of sociological investigation, much of which explores how groups benefit participants. What researchers have failed to consider is the group itself. Bringing social movement theory to bear on the case of eating disorder support groups, this study seeks to explore how support groups attract and sustain adequate participation. Participant observation in an eating disorder support group reveals that broad diagnostic and prognostic frames, coupled with strong motivational framing and collective identification on the basis of a share

In 1997 the World Health Organization announced an ambitious project called the Global Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis, as a Public Health Problem. The program is based on two pillars: interruption of transmission and morbidity control. Experience in Recife, Brazil, an endemic area for bancroftian filariasis, showed that an innovative approach called Hope Clubs, can equip lymphedema patients with the skills, motivation, and enthusiasm to sustain effective, low-cost and convenient self-care to prevent acute skin bacterial episodes and milky urine in the case of chyluria carriers.
